i think a lot of people are confusing "things that hurt men" with "matriarchy."

patriarchal stereotypes hurt men and women. men being expected to be breadwinners, men not being perceived as being possible victims of rape, men being more likely to do dangerous jobs, etc-- each one of those examples is a common TRP/MRA talking point. and each one is perpetuated by gendered stereotypes that feminists refer to as the patriarchy.

Really neither.

Those in power work to make things better for themselves and their families.

Obama probably cares more about his wife and girls than he does about some random minimum wage worker in Omaha, even though they have similar genitals.

Most people in power are men, but they stay in power largely by appealing to women (54% of the voting population).

Patriarchy. There are a lot of situations where women might take advantage, but then again they are limited on how much they can accomplish in this world. I don't think that there is an invisable wall holding women back, but it does feel like swimming up stream. It seems as though a lot of women have viewed that struggle not being worth it when they can default onto someone else, but those are the weaker women in my opinion. There are women in the world who don't have a choice at all, and I'm greatful for at least having a chance, but I know that it's going to be harder in many aspects with my future career because I'm not a man. I'll always still fight, but it saddens me to think that the fight is harder than it has to be for no reason. I don't believe that all men oppress women, but the few higher-ups do.

I consider it a Patriarchy in that the select few who run this world are men. However, I consider society as a whole leaning towards a matriarchy due to the fact that I believe the exchange between sex and commitment that exists between men and women is in women's favor. However, I do ultimately believe that the matriarchy I speak of benefits those at the top (patriarchy) and they will ensure the system maintains.

Essentially, the top use media, politics, feminism etc., to keep us down. They want to keep us angry at each other as opposed to getting angry at them.

Of course it's a patriarchy. The only matriarchy that I've ever come across is the ones that have spent the day trying to sting me while I carry out queen and brood inspections.

Neither. If one sex really held all the power in this society, they wouldn't be tolerating the discrimination against them. Discrimination exists against both sexes, so it seems illogical to me that one would hold all the power.

If anything, this society is oligarchic (not an outright oligarchy), since rich people hold a lot of power and often use it to shape rules to benefit them. Has nothing to do with their private parts though.

It's a patriarchal oligarchy at the top with all kinds of confusion underneath that they don't seem to care one way or the other about.

The only matriarch I see is women in politics and the entertainment industry. And to an extent, I tend to think women probably fit in really well with politics if you consider the nature of politics. You kind of need a 2-faced iron fist velvet glove duality within you to get around in it. Men lag when it comes to putting on velvet gloves. Being straightforward and ironfisted is a great way to be an unelectable 3rd party candidate - good luck with that.

But as far as women running the corporatocracy, that'll never happen. There's only so much of the world you can control with an empire of lingerie, beauty products, and pink crap.

It's definitely a mixture of both.

Whenever one side gets too much power to the point where a large group feels marginalized, some sort of revolution occurs to balance it out.

Like the "free hand" of the stock market.

Split by socio-economic status.

The upper echelon of western societies have been patriarchies for at least a millennium. Matriarchies have existed, but as exceptions usually as a result of early death of a patriarch.

The lower classes were also historically patriarchies, but the rise in divorce and unwed birth rates have resulted in more woman run households. These trends seem to be increasing, therefore matriarchies will possibly be a defining feature of the lower classes in the west over the next 50 years.

Neither. There might be a male majority at the top(in terms of money/politics) but that doesn't mean that those men have absolute power or that they don't serve women's interests. I wouldn't call this a "matriarchy" but society is still heavily slanted in women's favour in virtually every aspect. Men end up being coming ahead in some ways as a result of the expectations to be better protectors, providers and leaders which is placed on them(from a very young age), but women still end up benefiting from it without the sacrifices to get there, the personal costs, the responsibilities and the accountability.

On balance I think more patriarchal.

I think we're heading to being neither, and to a society where we don't enforce rigid gender norms on either men or women. I also think that's a good thing. As a gay man I have been negatively affected by gender norms for men.
