Lou Pai divorced his wife for a stripper so the court forced him to sell his Enron shares. no market changes since nobody suspected anything was wrong other than the dude messed up his marriage. he couldn't be prosecuted for insider trading because the court forced the sale of his shares. If you wanted to liquidate a good portion of your assets without affecting the market, this is a good way to do it. We are talking about a master strategist here, married to a high IQ woman. This would not be outside of his character.

however, assets for cash doesn’t affect net worth at all. It’s impossible to consume that much money. No amount of fancy dinners or private jet fuel or deep-sea expeditions or cocaine is going to blow through a sum like that.

there have been interviews with bezos in the past few years where he talks about how he sees what he’s doing with blue origin being much more important than amazon, so if his wife feels the same way about blue origin then it could be a way to get it the funding it needs.

Even if the stocks weren’t liquidated. It would mean that Bezos and his ex-wife would be the two most powerful voting members on Amazon’s board. Which is one more vote that didn’t exist previously.

Doesn't make any difference how much money it is. They decided to come together and create a family unit, pooling their efforts and resources. Whatever there is to show for it at the end gets split equitably, whether it's a little or a lot.

As I have said before, you don't lose half your shit when you get divorced, you lose half your shit when you get married. (and gain half of theirs)

Besides if you don't like that, you can always get a prenup.

Let's be honest, Amazon could have been built without MacKenzie and with Bezos. The opposite is not true. We can argue whether it would have been slightly less successful, but Bezos was actually integral - MacKenzie was a hanger on who is being very well rewarded for investing early.

A spouse should only see money if they stayed home raising children, since that means they gave up on their own career. Otherwise, you should leave with what you brought in. Whatever contribution she made to Amazon has as much value as whatever she negotiated at the time, just like any other early employee

She might not "deserve" half his wealth, and probably doesn't.

The law will say she's legally entitled to half his wealth.

"Legally entitled" does not equate to "deserve". People can and do claim legal entitlements to things they don't deserve. This happens all the time.

She doesn't deserve it because she didn't generate the wealth and didn't help him generate that wealth. He could have done this on his own. But, the law (passed by politicians with majority female votes; the threat being "pass the gynocentric laws we want or you are OUT and we will elect politicians who do pass gynocentric laws") has decreed that if you hit the jackpot and are married to a multimillionaire entrepreneur, you are legally entitled to half the wealth and a stream of income for life from said entrepreneur.

Guys, think of it in terms of having a business partner. Say your contract calls for a 50/50 split of the company. In the event of a dissolution, would you settle for a smaller share, given the fact your partner turned out to be much more dynamic, resourceful and effective than you were? Absolutely not. Mackenzie Bezos does not deserve $68 billion from the divorce. He cheated, yes, and because of this I believe she should get something, but not 50%, especially because of the nature of Amazon. It's not like they're splitting a family business. Furthermore, it should be said that most of Jeff Bezos' wealth is in the form of Amazon stock. If she gets $68 billion in stock and sells them because of her "feels", the value of Amazon stock will go down and not only will Jeff Bezos' net worth drastically decrease, but those of Amazon's investors will also decrease.

Yes. Marriage is essentially a joint venture. From the day you marry until the day you divorce, everything either one of you earns is both of your property and gets divided equally.

Anything either one of you had before marriage should go back to its original owner (though most states have laws where if you've co-mingled everything hopelessly and didn't keep track of who brought what into the marriage, you just divide the pre-marital assets, too).

Anything either one of you earned after the marriage is your independent property.

But in pretty much every jurisdiction, anything earned during marriage is both people's property. Marriage is a joint venture. If your spouse isn't being a supportive part of your venture and making any part of your success possible, divorce her earlier rather than later before you make a lot more money.

Also, use corporate tricks. Put 99% of your profits into your company instead of your bank account, let the business pay for most of your travel and other expenses, draw a reasonable but modest salary, and don't have any money to your name when you divorce. Have it all tied up in the company.

I don't know all the details but apparently she was Amazons first employee and did all the accounting, and probably a lot more. Was she instrumental in the creation of Amazon? Seems so. Jeff almost certainly did the majority of the work but she was there working along side him from the beginning.

Does that mean she's entitled to half? Yes.

Edit: My post seems to have triggered a few RP guys. So let me say this. She was with Jeff from the beginning, when Amazon was nothing. There is no question where her loyalty lies. She was with him shooting in the gym from the beginning and then gave him 4 kids. She put in work too. She might not deserve half but she deserves something.

It's hard being married without your finances intertwining. The decisions that you make while married are different then when you are single. I'm writing this while I'm staring at the big screen TV that my husband begged me for us to get. It maybe "fair" for each person to walk away with exactly what they contributed but it will be a pain in the ass and impossible to prove who contributed how much money, work and time on marital assets.

The reason why marriage is such a big commitment is because it risks exactly this. Putting your current and future finances on the line.

It’s a declaration of love to say “I’m so committed, I’m betting all this shit for you” there’s nothing more serious than setting up a legal and financial consequence for the breakup.

I’m no lawyer, so I don’t care about “deserve”. Divorce is meant to be difficult and hard though. So I doubt he walked into the marriage thinking “well breaking up will be easy” because that loses the whole point of marriage.

I mean, she was an early employee of Amazon so there is that as well. I don't think she will get half and they will likely settle imo. When dealing with those sums of money I don't think the final payout amount actually makes a difference because both of them will have elite levels of generational wealth even if she gets 1%. Washington is also a community property state so it's not like any wealth they gained was solely his. Generally in financially uneven relationships, I would say that the person who isn't the one generating wealth still deserves some form of compensation in divorce, as the other person in theory benefits from the partnership even if it isn't financially.

All that being said, this is a very unique case so I wouldn't draw any conclusions based off this.

I think that's a fair underlying principle for the division of the assets-acquired-during-marriage.

It also means that trophy wives or toy-boys who sit at home and do absolutely nothing (not even housework) have no claim on such assets generated within marriage. They were essentially luxury erotic services providers during the marriage, and they were paid through being taken care of during it.

I, personally, don't think she deserves half. The thing that's different with this case vs. other financially notable splits is the sheer amount of money we're talking about here. This isn't thousands or millions.....it's BILLIONS!!!!!!! I don't care what she gave up, what she sacrificed, what she contributed to the marriage and family, or what she contributed to the company. No one should have that much money. Bezos didn't contribute enough to the economy to earn that, he simply owned the company that did. I do not consider owning capital nor risking it to be economic contributions worthy of note and most of the work done to create and maintain Amazon has been done by the people Bezos severely underpays. Profit is the unpaid labor of the working class and Bezos is in my mind nothing more than a thief. Having his wife steal half his shit after that is just hilarious and deserved.

McKenzie made an investment in Bezos, financially and in other ways. She did not know how rich he could be, just like how an investor only have a limited sense of how much to gain from a stock. She made her bet and it pay handsomely. So yes, she deserve it.
