To expand upon what someone already said, when some people say they want respect, what they mean is they want the bare minimum you'd afford a stranger. They'd rather not be bombarded with overly personal or sexual questions and information immediately, they'd like to have their physical boundaries respected, etc. Some people mean that they feel they are more deserving than that; that others are to address them in a specific fashion, following commands or orders, and/or have a subservient attitude in their presence.

womens respect: pay heed to my boundaries, take heed of my needs and wishes, dont judge me, "respect my choices", dont violate my body

mens respect: admiration + deference

this is the source of a great deal of miscommunication between men and women

They are both different uses of the word. In one use respect, they typically just mean something along the lines of giving regard for their rights or boundaries. In the second sense it means holding someone to an honorific status due to ability or other positive properties. Women usually use it in the first sense, while men usually use it in the second.

By "respect" we don't mean admiration. We mean basic human dignity. For instance, we want you to respect us when we say no to sex. That means more than simply not raping. It means you don't pressure us, chastise us or keep trying to touch us like you are entitled.

In a relationship I see it as someone not trying to fuck with your ego and supporting & boosting your idea of yourself in private and in public. Not making you appear or feel as something "lesser" through behaviours that trivialize, diminish (e.g. by placing their ego over yours) or ridicule.

There are two main kinds of respect.

Standard respect is the baseline level of respect that you should have for any other person's autonomy, boundaries, rights, etc. Basically it's acknowledging that they're a person too and therefore giving them a certain level of consideration.

Respect for authority is a different level of respect, it means treating someone as if they are superior to yourself and have the right to make decisions for you.

Whenever I say anything about my deserving respect I'm using the former definition. I simply require people to treat me like a person.

I think that this dual definition is part of why "ReSpEcT WaMaN" has become such a meme. When someone seriously says "respect women" they're probably just telling you to treat women like people, but to someone who believes that "respect" implies authority it sounds quite farcical.

Do men ask for respect on the english speaking world?

It may be something to do with culture, but you would be hard pressed to find any men asking for respect, unless he has the power to kill you.

Women are the only ones using that word on any serious but not mortal conversation. And enter a lot of problems because of it too.

Respect is earned. It's that simple.

It's hard to get it from people who feel entitled or who are inward looking and cannot see what others do for them.

But that's then a cause to cut off such people from one's life.

Respect is the proportionate response, a reflection, of how others perceive us. It's been stated plenty of times here that there is no hard definition of respect. It is basically, "the consequences of behaving respectably", with the understanding that respect means something different to everyone.

I think people often confuse respect with common courtesy. The former must be earned, and but later should be given freely to everyone. Basically, treat everyone how you would like to be treated. I wouldn't want to be respected unless I did something worthy of being respected, but I expect common courtesy from everyone.

I definite respect as something completely different from common courtesy. Common courtesy is what I give to everybody, unless an individual proves to be a total asshole, in which case they get nothing. CC means holding the door open, helping someone who's injured or physically struggling with carrying something, being polite during conversations (unlike the crude banter I have with my friends), giving someone a few extra dollars if they can't afford their groceries...basically just being a nice person to those around me.

Respect, on the other hand, must be earned through years of experience knowing a person. If I respect someone, that means I'll take their advice seriously, perhaps even deferring to it. I will also spend more time giving them well thought out advice, and treat their opinions on par with my own, even if we disagree.

I'm nice to literally everyone, but there's less than a handful of people in my life I actually respect.

I think respect is just pretending that you are afraid of everyone, or that everyone is as capable of harming you as someone who does in fact threaten/intimidate you. Treat even weaklings and losers like they also could embarrass you with an uncontested slap to the face, even though of course they could not.
