Why are women more fearful of violence than men?

Because we don’t really stand much of a chance of defending ourselves against men like men would, and because we are targeted specifically for a pretty traumatizing violent act that is extremely hard to prevent risking. Men can lower risk of workplace deaths by picking an office career, for example, but how would a woman lower the risk of picking up a crazy stalker on her commute to work? Or the risk of dating a man and liking him and deciding to sleep with him and then when in bed he decides to hold her down and assrape her? We might be able to mitigate these risks slightly but they are always there and we all know women who have had these things happen to them.

Women are just more vulnerable, and we know we are, whether people actually take advantage of the vulnerability or not doesn’t prevent the fear of the knowledge of being so vulnerable.

Also, men seem to have less fear of violence than they even should. They take more risks, they get involved with more fights, this actually increases their chances of experiencing violence, rather than trying to lower it like women do.

Because no matter what the statistic is, just the fact that you know most people CAN beat you up is scary, whether they are likely to or not.

If you're a man, you might get attacked, but in your mind you at least know you have a reasonable chance at defense. If you're a woman you know it's game over the moment the conflict happens. People are more scared of flying than driving, even though driving accidents are far more common, because at least in a car accident you feel like you have some control. If a plane is going down, there's often nothing you can do except wait for your death in those last minutes, and that idea is very scary.

Women are not significantly more scared of everything than a man, but even slightly more fear usually tips the scale in decision making. In app development, we know even the slightest bit of friction may cause significant number of users to drop the app. If we think about that in terms of dating, even a small safety concern may cause many women to not take a chance on dating a guy she's unsure about vs giving it a chance. Men on the other hand don't have this friction (comparatively), which means naturally men's willingness to date on safety alone can can significant.

Men should be more fearful. Women are appropriately so. Testosterone and other sex hormones account for some of the difference, as do socialization and behavioral norms.

The majority of crime is committed by a male perpetrator against a male victim. The majority of female victimization is also committed by men.

Maybe for a man if he's hooking up with Jeffrey Dahmer, that's pretty high risk. Men are typically at risk from other men and in the workplace. Young men are also more reckless and more likely to put themselves in harms way.

Women on the other hand at risk from men.

The relevant stat is who is committing the violence...not who is most likely to be a victim. If men aren't afraid of other men, the only rational reason is because they believe they can defend themselves a vast majority of the time. Any other reason is recklessness, or an enjoyment of violence themselves.

Women are more at risk specifically when interacting with possible partners women are more likely to be victims of rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence. It doesn't make sense to be scared of someone approaching you on the streets because your chances of workplace death and injury are higher. That would be like avoiding a dog because you're allergic to bees.

To start with, the ways in which men and boys experience violence absolutely should be better discussed and addressed. What I wouldn’t say is that safety issues are “gender neutral,” because the ways men and women experience violence do tend to differ by gender, and so they deserve their own strategies to understand and address them.

In other words — murders or assaults of men and boys often have a differing set of common characteristics than murders or assaults of women and girls. (There are major overlapping driving factors in both murder rates, such as poverty and addiction.) But gendered violence against women does get a lot more focus.

Why? One reason I think is that due to the differing tendencies in common circumstances, murdered women are more often viewed as sympathetic victims than murdered men. (The disparity in physical power between men and women plays a role there too; people are always, always more reactive to violence by someone stronger against someone or something weaker. Protective instincts.)

A young woman murdered by an abusive partner will generally be seen in a more sympathetic light by the broad public than a young man who was involved with the drug trade, may have a long record of violent offences himself, and was murdered as part of his involvement in the drug trade. This is true even if both came from a social environments that made both more vulnerable to violence.

These differences also allow the general public to relate to one more than the other. Women can see themselves in that woman more easily than most men can see themselves in that man, especially as so many of us have our experiences of aggression from partners that felt unsafe, even if it didn’t rise to that level of violence.

Another reason violence against women gets more play is I think women have effectively organized to advocate against and raise awareness of the gendered violence that affects us, better than men have with the type of violence that affects them.

For instance, popular attitudes to domestic violence have changed quite a bit over the last 70 years or so in part because of women’s advocacy, but men have not really organized effective similar movements to address the types of violence they suffer from most. I know some men that have done good work in this regard, though.

For online dating id say it's more dangerous for men. So many stories of men being set up to meet a date, but really it's a group of thugs robbing and causing harm/death to said innocent man
