I spent 8 years after my divorce single by choice. Self reflecting and working on myself. Not seeking casual sex or even dating/talking to men for a relationship or validation. I started and completed my MBA, kicked ass at my job, enjoyed social time with my family and friends and never felt I was missing anything by not having a romantic or sexual interest. After an abusive marriage and taking the time I needed, I realized that I’m enough.

I decided to start looking for a relationship 18 months ago and for the first time joined dating apps. It’s had its ups and downs and certainly easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of talking to someone new you have a spark with.

I was happier when single because I didn't have to compromise, it was easier to stay focused on my interests at my own pace and at liberty to do so however I pleased, it was easier to save and budget money, I purchased only healthy foods I enjoyed, and I could have undisturbed sleep, or even choose not to sleep whenever I wanted to. I also only had to clean up after myself, do my own laundry, and cook for one, so my chores were halved.

I was happier in a relationship because I had someone to share intimate details of my life with in a trusting way, had someone to bounce ideas off of, and someone to motivate me when I was feeling unmotivated/doubtful/distracted. There's also the benefit of social approval - as a single person, I was routinely harassed about my singleness, but now that I'm in a partnership virtually everyone leaves me alone. But the disadvantages - like money issues, and sleep/dietary issues, issues of compromise, and diminished time-management due to increased domestic labor - somewhat nullified the benefits.

You have to first want a penis in your vagina before you can value it. Like many women I'm hetero-romantic but a D in my V isn't much of a priority. And I receive most of my validation from my female friends and family members. Maybe guys should be nicer to each other?

Another way you could put your title is "The only reason women are happier while single than men is because they are more sexually desirable". Kinda a harsh statement to make to your fellow men.

I have looked over this recently and the difference is not big. 49% of men are happy alone compared to 61% of women. It didn't mention the age though which is important because men get happier the older they get contrary to women how get less satisfied.

I'd argue that men would be happier alone if there wouldn't be pressure to get validation/status by having a girlfriend or by having friends who take care of your emotional needs instead of a SO.

BUT. It's not the kind you are talking about. Outside of a relationship, women can get their thoughts and feelings validated through friends and family and therapy. These are relationships that women tend to foster more intimately than men. Physically touching, hugging and kissing your friends and family is more socially acceptable as a woman too. So they aren't touch starved.

I just think single women are more likely to be socially active than single men. Single women I know have groups of friends they go out with in routines, whereas the single men I know are reclusive in their house.

So either women are just better at distracting themselves from what they really want: a relationship. Or women are actually better at fulfilling themselves outside of said relationship.

And divorced single women are even more adept at this.

A lot of the most contented single women I know don't use Instagram, let alone Tinder. They're basically stereotypical "cat ladies." They're happy with their work, their friends, artistic or athletic projects, sometimes a religious community, sometimes, well, pets. But basically, they have a community and sources of fulfillment (and sure, validation) that have nothing to do with sex or dating.

Men on this sub balk at the suggestion they develop a strong community and support network, but I really would recommend it. There was a pretty big sporting win in my area this week, and there were these hordes of extremely jolly, somewhat drunk guys out celebrating--a lot had come to town from elsewhere in a group. I don't know anything about these guys' love lives, but I know they didn't seem lonely.

If someone really enjoys attention it isn't like it just goes away - only the reciprocation does, if there ever was any. I still get asked out randomly, it isn't like men can smell my relationship status walking down the street. Not sure what friendships have to do with it either, but it isn't like we just dump our friends when we're in a relationship regardless of their gender.

I am happy because I wake up and get to read and write, uninterrupted, before work. I am happy because I choose to do yoga, play sports, and meditate regularly. I am happy because I have amazing friends who drink wine with me, watch movies with me, tag along to live comedy and theatre shows. I am happy because I have a job that pays my bills and then some, so I can furnish my apartment in a way that makes me feel comfortable and lovely. Plus, I get to go on a nice vacation each year (minus 2020), and some weekends away to see family. And most importantly, I am happy because I can afford therapy and spent months working through the trauma caused by dating unhappy men who thought sex = happiness.

I look forward to dating a mature man who finds joy in the simple things, but until then, I am very happy on my own <3

No it's because women don't live their lives based on the validation of men, or sex or casual sex, it's not something they think about 24/7. Think about it. Why do women who choose to go to college or graduate school do so? Do they do it because they think that men will like them more, that they will get more sex, or that making more money will garner them a better husband or more sex? I (29F) don't do casual sex, it's not for me. I am happy being single because although there's still a lot of progress to be made on the equality front, women today have their own independence, something they did not have before my time. I have a great job where I have an important role and am valued, I pay for my own stuff and often treat myself, and I enjoy my own company. I am much happier being single than I would be if I didn't have all these freedoms and needed a man (women couldn't vote or access line of credit independently without a man to cosign, this wasn't even that long ago in the 70's). I wouldn't be able to do anything without a man, and therefore I would most likely settle for someone just so that I could have a roof over my head and food to eat. It's either that or continue to live at home and be deemed a "spinster" and be looked down upon by society; and seen as a burden to my family. Women didn't have the same choices we do now (at least, my mother didn't).

We are happy being single because we finally have our independence. Further, Covid has highlighted how household chores/work is still expected to be done by women, even in relationships [Source]. I do all the housework because I live alone, but I would be frustrated as hell if I had to do that for two people and not get any help from my partner.

Our happiness being single has very little to do with sex. I don't need a man to have an orgasm, that's what sex toys are for. My happiness is not dependant on men (sex OR validation). I want an equal partner and I am happy to wait for that, and I don't need to compromise.

This is nothing new -- but it doesn't make women happy. Women have always been able to get laid pretty much whenever they like. Two decades ago I was at a swingers party near San Francisco. There was an older, very fat, and not very attractive woman who basically chose an attractive athletic young guy -- had sex with him -- and then she went home. Don't think she was at the party for more than 30 minutes.

She didn't look happy when she arrived -- and didn't strike me as particularly happy when she left -- although she did stratch that itch.

Well at this point you'll have to define "single." Like you said, single for guys looks a lot different than single for women. A "single" woman can still get free meals, people vying for her attention, and can generally enjoy a social life without having to contribute much besides her presence.

This is one reason the bashing of men for gaming is stupid. Yeah, don't waste your life away, but c'mon. If guys could simply go out for free and have pussy thrown at them constantly and get free food and drinks and attention, they probably wouldn't play as many video games with the boys on the weekend.

For this reason, I'd push back on the idea that it's only women who like casual sex. The attention and validation that women get from orbiters is more than satisfying enough. That being said, the other reason I would push back is that being single is only rewarding for so long for women; further, even women who embrace the single lifestyle would typically be significantly happier in a LTR with a HVM.

A lot of single women are not having casual sex. But as for the ones that are, what's wrong with it? Are you just expressing resentment and jealousy? Because that makes sense, I wouldn't judge that. But life is more peaceful without that anger in my opinion. I mean you pretty much said men wish they could have more casual sex, and if they could they would. Well, maybe put yourself in women's shoes, would you have casual sex? If yes, then why do you hate them for choosing the same thing you would choose?

Lol. I would disagree and say men are more happier single. This sounds delusional. There are many reasons a woman would enjoy being single. If you think people are only happy because they have validation from others that’s really sad. And sex isn’t the end all be all, masturbation exists. I’m like an 8 as a dude or was should I say. Hot if not said higher, but I’m more subjective.

So as top 20% percentile as a male, I still found it hard to fulfill sexual needs. It took a lot of work, and generally settling for lower looks then myself.

Any, even less then average, can get sex in one night which carries emotional fulfillment as well with little effort.

That is such a generalization. I enjoyed being single very much when I was young, after school, in uni, and I practically never had sex. About once every two years. Not that I'm asexual, I just didn't chase it. And my experience is the same for sooo many women. I was a completely normal, average young girl at university, with other normal single girlfriends. The sexual contacts we had were far and between. I'm always so baffled by the statements made here, they almost never describe what I've experienced and witnessed irl.

Women are happier than single men because of reduced quality of life in general. When men could provide free time for their partner via being a single income earner it meant that women could choose to invest time in domestic needs.

Now it is basically impossible to support 2 adults on 1 income. The vast majority of households both the man and the woman work. And women still do over 65% of all domestic chores and most of the child care despite also working. This means that the value of relationships to women has reduced significantly. The only thing that relationships offer to most women is more physical labour, and women are figuring out that they'd rather be single.

The amount of men with valuable repair and DIY skills has also significantly decreased, meaning that one of their most valuable assets is also disappearing. While for women, it has increased. Men's life skills are regressing while women are doing the opposite. And men with no life skills bring nothing to the table for women.

Until the chore gender ratio catches up with the work hours women are going to continue to find no value in male companionship.

I know plenty of “average” men who enjoy being single because sex comes easy to them. Actually, sex comes easy to everyone nowadays. Both sexes are usually only looking to settle down when they want to start a family.

It’s a great point. I love being single, and every time I’ve been single, it has been my choice. I don’t settle. So when I decide to be in a romantic relationship, it’s providing me more value than I could have myself as a single woman (otherwise it would not make sense to be in a relationship).

It's simple, a large portion of what women want out of a relationship is forcefully taken from men and given to women.

While men want sex, physical touch, a connection, a partner; women want protection, provision, and security. The state/society now provides women with that, so they see little need for men.

Imagine if sex was provided free, as a right, for any man that desired it... how many of them would be 'happier single'? How many of them would simply 'enjoy their hobbies' and be fine 'being single'.

Society ensures women's needs are met, and doesn't care about men. And then people wonder why 'single women are happier'??

Men get WAY more out of marriage than women, which is why married men are happier than single men. When both spouses work full time, women do the vast majority of the housework and virtually all childcare, as has been thoroughly documented. Married men get live-in, unpaid maids/sex slaves, while married women come home after work to another job. Single women and married men have free time to pursue hobbies and see their friends; married women don’t. This imbalance drives the romanticization of marriage in popular culture, because if women clearly understood how marriage would erode their social circles and consume their free time and agency, they’d never willingly consent.

Nah it’s cause they can focus on themselves. A lot of women in relationships are miserable from being men’s caretakers and emotional punching bags. Women also evolved to form stronger social bonds outside of their partner + men are more likely to expect their partner to put her own goals and hobbies on hold to support his.
