It seems ppl from my background react shrilly every time the topic of class comes up on PPD.

I grew up in a hybrid community that liaised poor ghettos / working middle class / middle class.

Both of my parents have graduate degrees, but they were teachers and their parents didn’t go to college. So we had a limited income and minute generational wealth.

That said, the schools I attended and my parents’ networks exposed me to UMC+ friends, peers, and such.

I guess you could call my upbringing “upwardly mobile.”

And you could call my friend group “young professionals.”

The nice thing about the “Yuppy” descriptor is that it can consist of everyone from poor to top 1%. The only qualifications are that you have a “career” and/or you know how to socialize within higher panache crowds.

That said, there are probably more “Yuppies” from middle class+ backgrounds than from lower class backgrounds.

I’ve seen a lot of men argue this past week, “well I’m from the trailer parks of Flint Michigan and I love Reddit and I’m a software engineer.”

Well I could list off my credentials as a black woman form an urban environ who went to great institutions and is the top whatever percent of earners. And I could even say that I know hella ppl like me. That still doesn’t mean that most ppl from my background will end up like myself and my friends/peers. If you’re from a poorer background and frequent Reddit you’re already not typical for that demographic. Accept that you’re a bubble lol.

I’m just trying to understand why so many are having a hard time with statements like this:

We’re saying it’s obvious to most that relatively speaking, the higher in socioeconomic strata a woman is/ or the more upwardly mobile she is, the more likely she is to have those qualities.

No one is speaking in absolutes. We are saying relative to another group, one group has a higher probability of having more (or less) ::insert quality or attribute::.

And yes, all of this means that men 100% consider socioeconomic status whether they realize it or not.

Happy Saturday !
