The qualities a men wants in his wife is what a mother should have taught her her daughter to be, since its a lot more social and community oriented skills. Those are primarily the skills that mothers/women interact the most with in their life.

Most men have wannabe bourgeoise values and want their daughters to reflect that - they should be successful in academics, successful in the corporate world, reject suitors that aren't up their standards etc.

Of course this tends to turnout women who are products of the academic and corporate system - surprise these women value career/material status over family, have trouble settling into a maternal role, are often ideologically antagonistic towards traditional family models etc.

Then they wonder why their daughters have few or no children, are distant from the family, are often ambiguous or outright resentful of their own fathers/backgrounds to the point of choosing men of other backgrounds, are more masculine than their mothers and so on.

Men would be better served encouraging their daughters to have values/behaviors closer to what they look for in wives - i.e. traditionally feminine.

I don't think this is really surprising. Or particularly problematic. The relationships are completely different.

For their children, people want the traits that are most helpful to the child. For potential partners people want the traits that are most helpful to themselves.

Men want their Daughters to be strong and capable, and Intelligent. Because that's what'll help their daughter the most. For their wives, men want the traits that they desire most in a relationship.

Of course men care about the happiness of their wives as well. But a relationship is two people coming togethor and saying "I'll fulfill your needs and you fulfill mine".

For a very straightforward example. I would value attractiveness as a trait in my wife, not so much in my daughter.

On a side note, I do want to point out that the word sweet was used, instead of the word kind. Even though the words are similar, they have different connotations. The word sweet has more romantic connotations, while the word kind is more just about someone being a good person. I'm willing to bet that if the word kind was used than there would be a higher percentage of men choosing that as a good trait for their daughter.

But based on the statstics you cited that I’ll assume are correct, I don’t see how this is evidence that men want their wives to be doormats while not wanting thier daughters to be. Unless you’re concluding that not being independent equals being a doormat. That was the only statistic you cited where most men want their daughters to be one way whereas most men don’t want their wives to be that way.

Edit: Actually it doesn’t even conclude that. It just concludes that independence in men’s wives aren’t a top quality while it’s one of the top qualities they want in their daughters. The framing is most important qualities, not a yes or no. So unless there’s something in the article that I can’t read because I don’t have an account, then you’re trying to change the frame.

When I hear words liked "independent" and "strong", if that described a wife, I'd think "this woman is probably a pain to deal with and could likely want to get divorced if she doesn't get her way".

Maybe this would help:

"When dealing with my wife, I don't want her to be independent and strong because it makes her a pain to deal with and she'd likely try to force her opinions over mine. I want her to be sweet when dealing with me." This is NOT the same as being a doormat. I've dealt with women who thought that they were right about everything. They're a pain in the ass and they're called things like "Karens".

"When dealing with OTHER MEN OUT THERE IN SOCIETY, I want my daughter to be independent and strong because some OTHER MEN will try to take advantage of her. If she is too sweet, then those OTHER MEN will take advantage of her." Basically, men are setting up their daughters to deal with a hostile world.

Men do not want their wives to treat them like they are a hostile opponent.

These are not the same thing because men trust themselves more than they trust the amalgamated mass of hundreds of men that his daughter will deal with over the course of her life.

It's not complicated. I would want a "strong' daughter because I know most men are shit, and I wouldn't want her to get abused by these men. However, if I personally knew the guy and determined he is husband material, I wouldn't discourage her from becoming the submissive trad wife - it's the role of women.

Strength and Independence is likely to be unimportant to a successful confident man looking for a wife.

Men are biologically and socially influenced to protect those weaker than them (generally their wife will be) and to provide resources for them. As a result, these qualities are less important than what you would desire in a daughter in which they have not guaranteed safety net.

Intelligence again, most people want their offspring to be intelligent as it correlates with success. In a wife, men wouldn't be as concerned about this although 72% still evidences it's importance.

Sweetness, I'm not sure how I feel about that word. Maybe it's more American but it sounds to me how you'd describe somebody you're attracted too, not your offspring or sister for example.

I wouldn't necessarily take this as men want a "sweet dumb, reliant, weak wife" and a "smart, independent, strong daughter".

I see this more as a parent selecting traits that will determine success in their offspring compared to selecting traits of attractiveness in a wife.

An interesting study, perhaps the same one has compared it, would be to look at both the mother and father's desired characteristics for a son and daughter. This would indicate the influence society has had upon our perception of gender roles in society.

I want traits for my daughter that’ll let her be successful in whatever career/hobby/lifestyle she wants to be a part of. She’ll grow into an adult and move out the house, and I want to know she’ll be smart, safe, and make the right decisions.
So intelligence, strength, independence are the best traits for a young 16+ year old ready to figure out a career and start leaving home.

Meanwhile the traits I look for in a wife is going to be different, I’m not looking for a 18 year old woman trying to figure out what she wants to do for the rest of her life, I’m looking for a 29 year old who’s already in a career and ready to settle down, marry, and have kids within 6-7 years. We’re talking about two entirely different types of people in very different parts of their lives.

I think the contextual framing matters a lot more than you attempt to give credence to. There are many traits I would say prefer in my father that I would not want in a male best friend, traits I would jump to in wanting in my sister that I would not want in a lover, things I want from a mentor vs a student, etc.

The mindset one adopts when hearing these different questions would alter the responses greatly and I don't think this can just be taken out of context as some gotcha.

I never told any woman to be a certain way. She is her own person with her own agency and she is accountable for her actions. I don't think women should be forced in a role they don't want to be in and I would treat my daughter the same way.

It's completely her decision if she wants to experience a hoe phase and use her sexuality for money or if she wants to be a trad wife. Anything comes with upsides and downsides. I'm an impulsive man who can enjoy delayed gratification for a certain amount of time, but if I were a young heterosexual woman today, I certainly would enjoy it to its fullest. I will say that for me, I echo a lot of what you posted, but I don’t think that is problematic.

A daughter is someone you can actively shape, a wife is her own person who was ostensibly shaped by her family/upbringing.

I also think that it’s very easy for a man to want to favor the traits that worked for him in his kids- daughters and sons alike. And what a man must bring to the table to successfully start a family is not necessarily the same as what he wants his wife to bring to the table. I don’t see a problem with that.

Whole post is dumb as fuck, easy answer.

You have to set your daughter up for the unknown. Similar to a son fathers are there to provide guidance and instill values in their children that will allow them to preserve and overcome obstacles in life.

The mothers role is that of physical and emotional support and nurturing. ALSO, if a man is going to marry a woman he KNOWS that he can be there to protect her.

So what does this mean? OF FUCKING COURSE a man wants a sweet, nice, motherly girl to take care of his kids. That's what every (most, lots of dudes are wack too) dude wants. But his job as a father is to also protect his daughter from men with more malevolent intentions.

It makes perfect sense. Men want the best for their kids so if follows that they want their kids to be able to have a good life even if they don't have a partner to support them/help them.

The wife already has someone to support her/help her, the hisband. So she does not need the traits required to thrive on her own.

It's obvious, just like how women tell their sons it's ok to be sensitive but then they'd never marry someone like that .

probably because that's in terms of relationship to themselves not other people .

Men may not care about women being independent because they're fine with being a provider, or supporting his not so independent wife in whatever way. It doesn't necessarily imply that they want to trap a woman in relationship without a chance to leave or whatever you want to believe. It may as well mean that they just don't care, especially if it's descibed as "top quality" (if I haven't misunderstood meaning of this). Same applies to strength. Men don't care as much about woman being strong when considering her as a partner but it doesn't mean they want their wife to be inept.

Now do the same for women. I can bet you a million dollars that they'll want their husbands to be simpy while wanting their sons to be tough guys. Puts into perspective how meaningless our debates are. Everyone switches sides once they get a kid of the opposite sex

INTERESTING🤔 Men dont want their daughters to be doormats like they want their wives to be.

It's not that, it's that they know that they are not going to mistreat their wives, but they don't know how the men in their daughter's life will treat them

They figure it's fine for their wives to be less independent because they know that their wife can depend on them. The same logic goes for all these traits

Their thinking is flawed, of course, but I can see where they're coming from. I figure the ideal traits for wife and daughter would be identical

Go back and ask these guys the same question except add that they get to choose what men their daughter gets to date/marry, and whether she stays with the guy or not
