The new quarantine gives the reddit company the ability to distance themselves from content that is harmful for the company's existence. It does this in a way that respects users and content creators and with minimal burden on users and moderators. Improvements to the new quarantines amount to nothing more than subreddit-specific NSFW tags.

What's the big deal?

  • TRP can just stay exactly as it is within the quarantine. There have been no existential demands placed on TRP. The only reason TRP would have to change is if it desired to have the quarantine to be lifted.

  • The warning screen is no big deal. The web is full of "accept cookies" here, and "please disable adblock" there, and "click this captcha" everywhere. Clicking "Accept" one time to grant your account access to TRP is completely trivial. You do the same thing the first time you encounter NSFW content on reddit.

  • The quarantine will help keep the trolls and incels that TRP moderators complain about out. This is because audience for shenanigans will balk at subscribing to the quarantine.

  • Moving to these alternate servers seems like sunk cost fallacy at this point. I get that TRP has already put work into a backup server, but that's an entirely different and untested website. It's great to have a backup, but the reality is that trp.red leaves users very vulnerable. These servers are high-value targets for blackmail and extortion. Use of the .red websites can be easily detected by network admins at routers, access points and firewalls and will be entirely blocked by different entities.

  • Operating a quarantined subreddit is like operating a free hosted server at this point. You don't even have to have a verified email to access quarantines anymore.

Complaining about a one-time click to access TRP vs going and creating a whole new account elsewhere that has no apps and will be hacked to kingdom come and harvested for kompromat in short order is just plain silly.
