My mother has a very close friend who's somewhat been like an Aunty to me for as long as I can remember. She's always been single and never had any kind of partner. She's in her mid-fifties now. I asked my mom if she was sad that she didn't get to experience having kids or a partner, so all this is from what she's told my mom.

She doesn't care too much about not having a partner as it gives her more opportunities to do things she's passionate about. She's travelled a lot and done missions work in Uganda. She works closely with refugee families to help get them settled in Canada and make them feel welcome. It takes up most of her time as she bonds with the families a lot and is committed to her job even in her off time. She's said it would have been nice to have kids of her own of course, but she's still very happy with where her life has taken her. She just never found the right guy for her and she didn't care to anyways. Dating was never very interesting to her.

I'm sure not all post-wall single women are as content as this woman is, but it is nice to see older single women who aren't bitter about their situation or towards men.

Older women can find relationships, too. And it’s not usually a problem of the youngest, hottest men don’t want relationships with them because women are more attracted to older men their own age at this point in their lives.

Guess what? Married women complain too. Happiness generally takes a dip in your 30s and 40s before going back up, and that's pretty much across the spectrum of single, married, female, male, etc. Married women with kids complain - whether deservedly or not - about work/life balance being hard and their husbands not doing enough. Married guys complain - deservedly or not - about their wives. Single guys complain there aren't enough "quality" women.

People who complain about these things all the time are toxic but that's personality-related, not pertaining to relationship status or gender.

Some people are hobby complainers and this isn't exclusive to single women above the age of forty. I know women in their late thirties/early forties who are single and are an absolute joy, and I know women who are married with kids and seem miserable.

It kind of sounds like your friend isn't well-adapted and sharing her life with a man (or anyone) would probably be a burden to her.

The handful of single post wall women I know are in my family. They seem to be enjoying themselves; employed, own their own homes, travel for leisure, if they want a man for a night they call one up, if they want kids they babysit for a weekend and send them back on Sunday night.

They all live near each other and like to get together and cook, party, travel, shopping, etc. The youngest two of the bunch spend half the year traveling and collecting a few boytoys along the way. The oldest is really into cars and just got a new Porsche something or other. The middle two are very religious and like to volunteer in the community + church.

No cats, no dogs, no boxes of wine and crying on /r/datingoverthirty.

If I was single and childless I would pack up my life here and join their little coven.

People just like to complain and compete in “I’m just soooooo busy”. Those who are partnered complain about what their SO did, didn’t do, said, didn’t say, job, kids, blahblahblah… and single people complain about job, life, dating is hard, blahblahblah.

It’s literally a competition in who has it worse.

i entered my 30s single. i like being with someone, but i was pretty happy single, too. i came into my 30s the most successful, confident, and at peace with myself that i’ve ever been.

Just depends on the person. I wasn’t upset to be 30 and single. But I’m also a pretty baseline happy person. If you’re miserable at 35 when you’re alone, a relationship probably won’t make that much better.

Either genuinely enjoying their lives and doing stuff like volunteering or kind of overly obsessed with men and their past.

My sister never married or had children and is in her late 40s. She is very involved in the dog showing community and travels around the country showing her dogs and doing other charity work. She has a big network of friends involved in philanthropy and seems to be more adjusted than I am.

The other friend I know around my age in her 30s reminisces about being twenty too much. Her idea of fun is still staying out till close at the bar. She isn't developing her interests and is kind of stuck in the past. She really only talks about work drama and how silly men are. She desperately needs a hobby.

Depends on how they got there. The ones that are like that by choice are pretty happy, the ones who are like that due to unfortunate circumstances or poor choices are miserable. The ones who chose to be that way have keep in shape, spend their money wisely, have a lot of time to spend on leisure activities, they have close bonds with family and friends and they have rotations of fwb’a/boy toys they can call when they want male company or attention. They obviously aren’t getting as much attention as when they were younger but they were intentional about their choices and set their life up to be happy without a long term partner.

Your friend complaining about work/life being different doesn’t necessarily have to do with being single so I’m not understanding the connection. Some people have shitty jobs but they don’t have a lot of other options so they just put up with the job so they can afford to survive. However the downside to that is that it will be taxing on your mental health and social life. Especially if your workplace is toxic, understaffed and/or disorganized.

I'll give the few I know:

My aunt on my dad's side: is 55, married & divorced twice. She dates men much younger and better looking than her generally, but after this last divorce, she is realizing that men no longer want her and she's slightly bitter about it. She is a great woman, no kids, makes a ton of money. But yea, her standards are crazy high, nobody will meet them. Both of her ex-husbands cheated on her, unfortunately.

Aunt on my mom's side: She is a strange bird. She's been married once and divorced after a very short marriage (I think 1 year). She's not ugly at all, especially for her age, she looks 10 years younger, at 51. She's a nerd, very introverted and very neurotic. She keeps chasing that great white Buffalo chad who she let get away in college.

Family friend on my dad's side: She's best friends with my aunt, also about 57 or 58. She did the same thing, dated men 10 years younger and better looking and they always cheated on her. She recently got divorced from a marriage of 15 years because he cheated. She is extremely bitter and misandrist now, constantly giving me snide comments about how men are shit. Posting on FB about how shit men are. She doesn't go a single day without saying something bad about men.

Having a very high standard has its risk. You should romanticize only achievable things.

And if you do actually want to get the golden prize. Work on it. It may takes deceiving,manipulation and information gathering. But at the end of the day you'll get what you want and it'll make you happy.

In my experience pretty unhappy. Most of them are bitching about this or that ex or trying desperatley to fill the void with "friends" where attraction clearly goes one way or another. If I had a dime for every rant about some dude who wasted years of their life I've heard I could probably buy enough booze to forget all of them.

The number of people who can actually handle being actually alone indefinitley is vanishingly small by my estimate. Once you get to know most of them you can tell they're either doing something to cope or else not actually single but just not formally in a relationship.

Guess what post wall women. You can travel with your kids and husband, have sex with your husband whenever you want. Cook for your family and be appreciated. Guess what, can even sleep in with your kids on weekends.

2 older single women I know have health problems but they still have boyfriends their own age and live alone. They bitch alot, mostly about their health problems, money problems and family problems.

A third single lady I know is like 6 feet tall, built like a man and is an obnoxious masculine pushy bitch. She sucks as a person and isn't attractive so she never really had a boyfriend. She's addicted to gambling but has money from her family because she never left home and inherited their house when they died.

Overall these women are not the most pleasant to be around, but then again neither are married older women. Most married old ladies are just as bad

I think of my brother in law, he's the youngest in his family and has four older sisters. They're all in their 50s and 60s. Neither of the oldest two sisters married or had children. The oldest, Dawn, is pretty secure in herself, travels a lot, has friends she hangs out with, is clearly very cool with being single. The next oldest, Gail, is very not cool with being single. She's always asking if she can visit the others which is fine, but then she complains constantly about no one coming to see her. We almost never meet but I remember years ago when we were together at a family event, she started unloading on me about how no one sees her. She was totally sober too. So yeah, I've seen it go both ways.

“Post wall” women are no more miserable than “post wall” men. Married or single. Tbh, I know wayyyyyyyyy more “post wall” single men who are miserable and God awful to be around than “post wall” single women.

Much of the things you described doesn’t sound like anything out of the ordinary. Just sounds like a mature woman who understands the realities of life because she has adult problems. It’s not bc no one wants to fuck her.

You don’t hear people in relationships talk about this stuff bc they find support and complain to one another instead of their friends.
