Pursuing your personal goals. Pretty much what a lot of women and men already do. I see no reason to tie one's purpose to their gender and limit them to it. Nowadays we can actually choose what we want to do and work on it.

Not surprisingly a good share of people has an issue with it. Some can't choose for themselves, some really want to fulfil their gender role and struggle with it, others wish that everyone was restricted to the choice that has been made for them.

Well, after my mom's career took off and dad was no longer our breadwinner, he seemed to find a new purpose pretty easily.

He's a neat freak, so house was always clean. Converted guest room to a home gym. Managed the finances. Worked out. Played golf. Read self-improvement books by the pool. Picked us up from school when my mom couldn't. Saved the day if we forgot anything at home. Reconnected with old friends. Was actually able to spend time with us in the evenings because he wasn't so exhausted. That sort of thing.

He struggled a bit once my brother and I had both left for college (so did my mom, but she had work to get her mind off it). Ended up going back to work himself when he found an opportunity that he was genuinely excited about.

I'm in an egalitarian relationship and basically what that means Is that we just work as a team and cooperate and the "roles" aren't assumed by our gender it's just whoever is better at a particular thing or hates doing it less, takes on that task. So to give some pragmatic examples, he is the better cook/has more patience for it so does more of the cooking. I do the laundry every week. We take turns cleaning the bathroom. He usually does the floors I usually organize the social stuff (it can be really time-consuming getting groups together, lots of messaging back and forth), make the grocery lists or double-check to ensure nothing was missed, book the appointments and call when there's an issue with the internet and stuff like that, or negotiate contracts. I also found us our current apartment since I'm good at finding a good value deal, and I'll usually find us a vacation deal. Oh, and he kills the spiders since they terrify me.

That's just the pragmatic stuff though.

Even if he was paraplegic he would still bring value because he's just a lovely, soothing soul. He's a good listener, compassionate, he's funny and has great taste in movies and he's cuddly (I'm a biiiig cuddler) and he's great at finding gems - obscure and random songs and music videos that I just love. If he was a paraplegic I would miss his dorky adorable hilarious "I don't even care how weird I look right now, I'm gonna do it anyway" dancing though, as it cracks me up. In short, what he offers is just great company. His companionship. Some people are stressful to be around and raise your cortisol levels, and he's just not. His prescence is calming. It's a joy.

I would also say that regarding the "strong independent woman" trope I do think it's important for women to have savings - "f**k you money." Enough money to survive for six months in the event of an emergency. Anyone who has ever been trapped in a terrible job and unable to quit because they're paycheck to paycheck will understand the importance of this. And I do think as a general principle people should be with someone because they want to be with a particular person, not just because they need to be with someone. Having said that, even contributing to the rent or mortgage with her own income and assuming she will never be with a rich man or drop out of the workforce, an average-earning woman can get a nicer home combining incomes with even an average-earning man - a nicer home in a nicer area, and pay less than living on her own. Simply because common sense; two incomes goes further than one. Even two fairly mediocre incomes.

Also having said that, there is also no shame in having a roommate to afford a decent place (where you can't afford the nice housing in the nice area on your own).

Tl;dr: Your role can be best friend, helpmate, partner in crime, giver of orgasms, killer of spiders, etc.

I think this is why so many men feel lost and purposeless sadly, and I’m even going to go so far as to say it’s a contributing factor to the high rates of suicide among men. Society has completely stripped them of what God has designed them to do.

I’m not sure if you are asking because you aren’t married, but there are still many traditional women out there who value the leadership, protection and provision of a man. My husband and I are traditional Catholics, and traditional gender roles are highly valued and taught by the Church.

Why do you need society to tell you what you should want? You've already been doing your entire life. Study hard, get an education, get a safe job, build your 401K, buy a house with a white picket fence, get a good girl to marry you. Raise 2.5 children.

We each need to define, choose and pursue our own purpose. Ideally, that would be our focus in our 20s: choosing our place in this world.

It is not about doing what society expects of you. It is about living the kind of life you want to lead in the few years we have on this earth. There are no right and wrong answers; no right and wrong people. Simple what is right or wrong for you. It deserves and requires careful consideration.

Choose want you want to be; choose the kind of relationship(s) you want to have; and respect others' choices, as they are not you.

What ever you want your purpose to be the choice is yours. You want to be a singer? then be a singer. You want to be a farmer? then be a farmer. You want to be the “traditional” man that provides for his family with a housewife? You are free to pursue that as well. There is no objective purpose in life. We have yet to discover what is our goal in this universe or why we are placed here. All we do know is that we exist and the only thing that awaits us is death. So use this time that you have to learn and appreciate existence for what it is. From it’s highs to it’s lows. Pursue on creation not destruction. Encourage love instead of hate. Reach for understanding instead of ignorance. Chances are, you will fall in some aspects in your life. But don’t let these instances discourage you and understand that these difficult times are only temporary. Don’t fall into that mind trap of despair. Keep pushing on no matter how illogical or hopeless it might feel. You will make mistakes but do not blame yourself or use these mistakes as proof of incompetence or imperfection. No one is truly perfect. Don’t let these mistakes define your present nor your future. Adapt and grow. Even the tallest trees in the world were once small. All the best to you brother.
