Who in the fuck denies mental health services to men? Go seek counseling I don’t think anyone is actively trying to stop that. We are progressing with our mental health awareness. I think it’s the machismo bs that we are taught as we are kids. Usually by men in our family.

Sit around and blame everyone else under the sun but not the man in the mirror.

Because we as a society, at least in the US, have decided that mental health is too expensive or whatever to be covered by insurance, and we as a society have decided that health care in general is not a basic human right.

I think there is a movement to provide people with mental health advise and information. But America's Healthcare system is broken. We have some of the worst material survival rates of all first world countries. We have definite racial bias in how patients are treated. Like I don't see how you think it'd targeted at men and not just everyone. Healthcare costs are high and most Americans struggle to afford them.

But you need to also look for help, and be working to treat yoir mental illness if possible. It's hard to be physically healthy in America as well, and physically health plays a huge roll in mental health. Most Americans struggle with this. But we are seeing improvements in both mental health and physical health. A lot of these issues are due to childhood trauma and shit. Women are more likely to seek mental healthcare as well. Men also choose more violent suicide methods, so the more we encourage men to seek mental healthcare treatment and legitimate advice from a licensed therapist or something equivalent, the better.

But this is a universal issue. Transpeople have some if the highest suicide rates of any group. Lbgtq suicide rates in general tend to be high. We all deserve good mental health and treatment.

How are men being denied mental health services? Seek out a doctor and get meds and treatment. You need more than therapy if you are suicidal.

I volunteer at a suicide hotline and the number of reasons why men kill themselves are numerous. Financial issues, relationship issues, health problems. There’s not an easy solution as there’s not one cause.

Better mental health services are need for sure. But no one wants to pay for it. It’s fucking tragic.

Because in a lot of cases, those around those males who off themselves are better off (materially, if not mentally/emotionally in the medium to long term). Of course it's not polite to put that out in the open, but it's there.

Mental health services for suicide is generally not gendered, with the big exception of anorexia and bulimia

(at least in New Zealand)

There is however one glaring difference.

Women try suicide more, usually through means that's easier to stop (pills, slitting wrists)

Men commit suicide more because they use means that's harder to stop - shooting themselves in the head, hanging, jumping

Everywhere, anywhere mental health services are underfunded. And so they try for serious cases first. Between "this person tried and we need help ASAP to prevent a repeat " and "we think this person is going to commit suicide" services who are underfunded and understaffed will prioritise the person who they know is definitely killing themselves over the person who might kill themselves.

Since men succeed more on the first go and women are more likely to use "soft" means (going slowly and painlessly as possible) it generally means that women survive more often to actually get treatment

The answer is to increase funding to mental health in order to ensure they have enough sustainable staff to help those in need regardless of "committed" or "will commit"

But this is hard to do:

One social workers and other caregivers in this field are paid shit or are volunteers and so will often quit. Resulting in high turn over and less competent staff

People don't care enough to fund it.
