There’s are attraction thresholds looks wise that you have to meet and your behavior/persona needs to be congruent with that.

If you’re top tier then you can dress up as a clown and women will find it endearing. But nobody sees people that good looking in every day life.

If you have passable looks (not to good not too bad) then you can adopt a bad boy persona and do much better than if you adopted a good boi one because it gives you an edge.

Then there’s people that are below the curve and have to try extra hard no matter what they do

Not true even in the slightest. I consider myself to be pretty attractive, others do as well apparently. My main problem is that I don’t drink, smoke, party nor have tats & I’m not in the streets. I’ve been told by women that I’m a goodie two shoes. Although it was in a flirty playful way, I still felt the condescension. And I have no doubt that they’re attracted to me because they compliment me frequently. Even the “good” girls go for/has gone for the thugs. They may settle with a “good” guy after the fact because they might’ve gotten hurt by the thug that they were with before, but they love the dangerous dude. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. The problem is people’s reluctance to admit it. I’m sure there are good girls who find my lifestyle attractive, but they most definitely aren’t common. I do think that there is a type of woman that goes for bad boy personalities, and because of that the bad boy can afford to be a little less attractive than a non-bad boy. But I don’t think that women monolithically are attracted to one personality type. If a guy is of her preferred personality type, whatever it is, he can get away with being somewhat less attractive.

Of course, there are some cloying, “nice guy” personality types that are universally unattractive. Most good looking guys aren’t going to be these types, though, because they have gotten positive attention from girls and other people from a young age.

I also do agree that a truly ugly guy probably isn’t doing himself favors by being too dark triad. However, I’ve seem some really unattractive guys who look like they have dark triad personalities get women, so I don’t think that this is universal, either. There are always some women out there desperate for male attention from a guy who seems confident, no matter how unattractive he is. I think that the biggest attractor of any is not looks but confidence.

This is the cold hard truth and it goes both ways, I've seen very attractive women get away with bad behaviour because of their looks too. I'm not sure if it was this sub that I first heard the "pretty privilege" thing on, but yeah that's a thing. One thing I will say is if you are of average attractiveness, being nice will make you more attractive like this guy who I used to work with. Your understanding of what a "bad boy" is is comically narrow.

Bad boys can be directors at nonprofit charities. Bad boys can be renewable energy consultants. They can be investigative journalists. They can be upper-class members of the board at some posh foundation or they can be virtually homeless itinerant musicians and many things in between.

What defines a bad boy is that they like to take risks. They're masculine, dominant, willful and have a big disagreeable streak. They don't care when people dislike them. They rely more on the force of their personality than institutional rules to get their way. They're not shy about using force either. They can be ruthless, quarrelsome and defiant, but also strong, effective and magnetic.

What they aren't is boring or complacent. They don't have a complacent bone in their bodies.

Women like them because of course they do.

All the bad boy, hot boy, rich boy has more to do with the upraising or insecurities of one girl than with the general standard of girls.

If your caretakers are degrading others based on their looks and wealth. Chances are the girl will need looks a wealth in order to feels like she's dating her worth.

If you were raised by an emotional unavailable caretaker, chances are you will see every emotional unavailable behaviour (bad boy) as love.

And then there is the toxic love trap. If you (always) had a turbulent relationship, that turbulence will be the bar. And normal, safe love, will seem boring.

A "bad boy" is an unflappable, competent, good-looking man who demands reason and accountability from them and others in their life. He has a plethora of other options and will exercise them quickly and without fanfare if a woman-in-question is found to be unworthy of his time.

Bad boys are exciting to a lot of women (you can decide for yourself how this reflects on those women). Bingo. Also, women equate being treated as another option as being "bad", because most guys will do the most for women because they lack options. Hot guys don't lack options and thus can treat women as disposable, because they are to those men.

Women see that as bad because most of them can't get the hot guy all to themselves. Hot guys always have options. A hot guy doesn't even need to be a stereotypical bad boy. The hot guys just have to treat her like another option in his sea of many other options for them to call him bad. Hot guys can also afford to actually be bad people as you pointed out, and still get women. Looks matter a lot than people would like to admit.
