I was at the hackathon. After discussion, my team, friends and many others are planning to not attend this event next year due to fact that the judges clearly showed signs of sexism, and the sponsors ignored the fact that the competitors did not show an actual application.

Nonetheless, this story CANNOT go unheard. I hope this situation goes viral or something.

Is there any possible way to track down the person they stole the code from and did the work and let him know. Hell help support the original coder and see they can sue based on copyright infringement.

Next do as someone suggested and see if you and the other coders can sue hackerthon for misrepresentation of the contest because the winners did not meet the standards they stated.

Hi guys! I'm the owner and only developer of the youtube channel simcoder (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ5xY26cw5Noh6poIE-VBog), you can see in the discussion board it is really me.

I'm deeply saddened to see what I've worked for being used in this demeaning way. The goal behind this channel and all of the code that I write by myself and post on github is for learning purposes, mainly so that people that aren't able to attend college (which I'm currently doing with a lot of effort) may learn and move up in life, in sum, to help anyone accomplish their dreams.

If true, what this girls did is sickening, the lack of principles is beyond anything I've ever seen. With that being said, I've placed the MIT Licence in all my github code for a reason, it protects me in the eventuality that someone uses the code and something goes wrong with it which, because I don't have the resources to defend myself in any legal battle is a must. The unfortunate effect of this is that the girls are able to use the code legally, even if it is completely copy and paste.

If any of the teams that were deprived of their hard earned awards and need me to talk to the organizers about the code (or lack there of) developed by the team in question I would be more than happy to do so.

I'm truly sorry this happened.

UPDATE: as the team did not give me credits for the work, which is required under the MIT license, I will be writing an email to the organizers asking why it isn't there. Hopefully this will force them to look at the code of the team and, most importantly, the podium of the competition. If they fail to do fix the situation I will most likely release a video exposing them, video that will remain on the internet for as long as it exists.

UPDATE: Email sent, lets see what their response is.

Roammate is an app targeted towards women to help them feel safer on public transportation by using a buddy system.

I majored in Computer Science. I had female classmates who I'm friends with. They're awesome people, and I consider them good friends, but to be honest they're all average engineers at best.

But what'ya know, female only recruiting events, offers from companies left and right, promotions faster than other, really talented engineers I know. It's extremely easy to do well as a woman in STEM if they choose to be in STEM. It pisses me off when people say the unequal representation is due to discrimination.

Welcome to the field bud. Everyone is complaining about the lack of diversity in STEM companies so all the companies try to prove they are diverse and all inclusive every chance they get. If you look at large STEM companies, especially the computer field you'll see their diversity doesn't hold up. They just have to look like it does in the media. The media covers events with prizes and when women or minorites win them it looks good for the sponsors and company. Not saying it's right, but it happens.

Code is licensed with an MIT license, which gives them unrestricted permission to do whatever they want with the code. Which means so dude spent hours of his life working on this project without expecting to see a penny from it, and in return, he gets to see someone rip it off and make 3k for it.

Did some digging and found out that the guy who's code was ripped off spends hundreds of hours making videos on youtube to teach people how to program. For free. Let's show him some love so at least he gets something out of this whole demoralizing situation. He's also got a free ad-supported app on the play store, if you have an Android phone- throw him a download and a review.

Wow, the fact that they blocked the person who brought the issue to their attention means they already knew and don't care. They wanted the female group to win so they let them even though they blatantly cheated.

Not only did they use code created before the competition which is one of the rules in plain english but they used code they didn't even create.

Post this in MensRights. The legal sub took it down because vagina. They don't like it when you point out feminist hypocrisy or even special treatment of females. They have been known to do similar things in the past. Seems like they are just a bunch of social justice lawyers and didn't want to actually give you any solid advice. You can absolutely sue them. That, or at least contact them and say you will go the media with it. Plenty of places in the manosphrere would love to take this as a story and publish it to show the current craziness in stem with regards to women.

You must create everything at the event.

The rules are not extremely specific, so "creating content" at the event could include adapting content under an MIT license, but the problem I see here is that no work was done... which I find extremely disturbing.

Really late to the thread, but I couldn't resist posting. This type of behavior is one of the main reasons I left a successful career as a software engineer. I actually spent 6 months porting an old legacy system to a new code base and server system. At the end of the project two girls, who weren't involved at all, got awards for my work because they made a few power points to talk about it.

This is only one of many incidents. I finally had enough. Fuck that industry. Too many leeches and lazy fucks.
