There actually is a Stanford "study," but it's complete nonsense. Basically two women from Stanford went to tech recruiting seminars and called everything sexist and unwelcoming to women because it was mostly men doing the recruiting.

However flawed the logic or facts may be, the reasoning is that the patriarchal society guides women away from STEM so it that sense they didn't have the chance to "voluntarily" choose. Starting from girls playing with dolls and boys playing with guns, cars and space rockets. I guess that was what she was trying to convey at least with that elegantly succinct "fuck you".
EDIT: You guys seem to be misunderstanding my point. I don't think the way I'm describing her reasoning. The point is that the last line which you treat as a burn would not register as a burn to her. [–]EasternEuropeSlave 119 points120 points121 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
So women are slaves of their environment, not strong enough to throw away the shackles of being forced to play with dolls as a child. And that is why they choose HR or gender studies instead of STEM. Yup, you have me convinced. /s

Same reason men don't go into nursing and dental hygeine...etc. some jobs arent even seen as a possibility for a gender. A lot of guys who could of become a nurse over a harder manual job never see it as a possibility, like it doesn't even cross their mind even though they could be amazing at it. Being in STEM never crosses some women's minds even though they could be amazing at it. But this subreddit feels a bit ...angry lol to really go into that.
[–]DJMixwell 56 points57 points58 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
IIRC, Scandinavian countries have pretty much achieved equal opportunity. Theres nothing stopping anyone from doing what they want, no social pressures to dictate what you should do. But 20 to 1, men pick stem fields and 20 to 1, women pick care fields.
Men and women are biologically different. That doesn't mean they can't be equally good at all the same jobs, but it definitely plays a factor in what jobs they might be interested in. Equal Opportunity != Equal Outcomes. We don't need more women doing X or more men doing Y, we need to give people the opportunities to do whatever the actually want to do, and let the chips fall where they may.
[–]EasternEuropeSlave 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
men don't go into nursing
It is beyond ironic that even if men do go into nursing, they end up choosing a more demanding branch or nurse and are better at the job than their female colleagues. There is a study of that somewhere that shows that nurses in anesthaesiology, arguably the most complicated nursing there is, are mostly male and better than female.

As a woman I agree with you 100%. Any type of influence you mentioned earlier (media, teachers, peers, parents) guess what? They are all female dominated. Dont try to come at us with bullshit like women are predestined by their environment when feminists have been burning the natural order of things since the turn of the century
Did you know that the majority of teachers are female? Did you know that there are more kids TV programs for girls than boys? Hell even disney is at fault with this with their "dream big princess"
Honestly how unlady like it is for you to not accept responsibility for your own actions and decisions. I mean I even hate to throw religion in there but dont you think there was a reason why God gave us free will?

That feminists have made up a non-existing boogeyman called ”patriarchy” to blame everything on, when everything they complain about gender roles is in fact based on biological differences.
Also they try to ”smash biology” by claiming men and women are exactly the same or by feminizing men and masculinizing women.

you must not have a very high opinion of women if you think letting them play with the toys they want to play with as children makes them somehow unable to choose things later in life. that is some seriously dumb shit
does playing with dolls make you gay? or video games make you violent? does forcing a lesbian child to play with dolls make them straight?
society doesn't "guide" women away from STEM fields. playing with dolls does not take away a woman's agency and ability to choose what career they want later in life. FFS.

the reasoning is that the patriarchal society guides women away from STEM so it that sense they didn't have the chance to "voluntarily" choose.
Can you help me parse this? Society is a catch all term that lefties use in their theories. Who does this patriarchy consist of?
Of all the above (feel free to add to the list), which one is "guiding women away from STEM" according to you? Suppose you have an answer for the question, what are the sources for your answer?
Regardless of what the your answer is, are you saying girl/woman is so weak that even when she is interested in pursuing some STEM shit, she let herself to be dissuaded from pursuing what she is interested in? Doesn't that sound pretty insulting to your gender, considering that you are lamenting MANY women aren't choosing STEM shit?
Suppose there are people dissuading (in that list), who is paying for the said party to actively go behind the girls to dissuade them from STEM shit? I mean, what is he personally gaining by such dissuasion tactics?
[–]n0n0nsense 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think what they are saying is that little girls interests are influenced towards a certain path. If a child is given mechanical themed toys (trucks, helicopters, etc) they might become engineers. If given dinosaurs, they might become scientists. But since they are given baby dolls, the nurturing theme is reinforced. Same with religious indoctrination. A minority escape the belief as they age, but most retain what they learn growing up. How true this is, I don't know, but I see the logic behind the hypothesis.

nice apologetics and pretending to not be knighting for her, but it's transparently obvious and that excuse is total crap. It's a biological trait of men and woman, men are interested in things, woman in people, as proven with tests of several month old infants where the boys would stare at objects and things for longer and more often than girls would stare at faces and people.

That study's sample size isn't really reliable, though. It could be true, of course, but it could also just be a false positive. Note the wording used in the beginning of the article: the study suggests the possibility that boys and girls develop differently.

Here's another study saying the same thing. They even note it exists in primates (we evolved from primates. Yes even womyn. [–]functionalghost 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Read the whole article. I know reading is hard but I believe in you. They find their hypothesis proven.
This is nothing new you know. We have known since the early 90s conclusively that yes men and woman vary in personality and personality traits like interests and the blank slate has been debunked again and again. It's completely settled science and you are the outlier.
As I mentioned before: if gender is entirely socially constructed and male female Interests are entirely socially constructed that would make what all the religious types have to say about homosexuality being a choice true, so by that standard there is no reason to entertain the sexual deviance. You can't have it both ways.
Men are different from woman physically and mentally. You need to get that chip off your shoulder and stop being willfully blind just to support your world view. That kinda mentality and wilful ignorance of biological fact has led to some pretty big catastrophes in human history
[–]tsintzask 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Tell me where in my comment I said I believe there's no inherent difference between men and women. Yes, it's a well known fact that, on average, men are better than women at some things and vice versa. That's not my point.
My point is that in this particular study, the result should be taken with a grain of salt because of the relatively small sample size. Gender has social and biochemical elements; of course there's going to be differences.
Also:
I know reading is hard but I believe in you.
Attack the argument, not the person making it. FYI I had read the article before commenting anyway, it's not that long.
[–]functionalghost 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I gave four other sources. Please don't lie.
You implied that there is a justification to the idea that it's not biologically determined. I proved through cited studies four of them that it is biological to the best of our current knowledge. Sure social Plays a factor but inversely to what you are saying: in Sweden they have as close as anyone to attempting to socially engineer woman and men to have the same interests and "opportunities" and yet this has led to more woman going into traditional female jobs and more men going into traditional male jobs and despite every effort from the cuck feminist gov there to force it the other way year after year the same thing keeps happening. So all evidence points to your biological determinism theory is wrong. If social limitations are removed people are More likely to follow there base biological instincts.
You lose, flawless victory. Fatality
[–]tsintzask 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I had to look at your post history to find the other comment because for whatever reason it isn't showing up in the thread for me. Oh well.
All of those sources say nothing about the lack of women in stem, but rather discuss the toy preferences of boys and girls. Two of them, in fact, and one meta-analysis of similar studies. They all indicate that dolls are the favored choice regardless of gender, although boys are more likely to go for a toy car or something than girls. That's not really saying anything about the gender disparity in STEM, which has more to do with people feeling more comfortable in fields with many people of the same gender already, as well as the magnified effect of the skill disparities.
Judging by the way you keep trying to paint me as this crazy tumblr idiot, I don't think you're really arguing in good faith, though. In that case, it's not worth my time or yours.

[–]Smoke-and-Stroke_Jr 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I'm not that sure she understands it. She replies simply with "fuck you" because she has no other argument, and that's a good and simple way to stop the conversation while not having to validate her point. It also basically stops her opponent in their tracks, and helps invalidate anything else that have to say, especially since the person hes speaking with is just an asshole that wants to hurt her (you know, because he's male). Whether the burn registers or not for her, it will for others.
[–]kawaiihawaiimogwaii 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, it's pretty much the same when trying to burn religious people with logic and reason. There's little satisfaction in it since they are unable to actually see it. Can be funny for the bystanders though but it kinda feels like making fun of retarded people.

Women aren't children that need to be told what to do or what to become, but in a western society where women face virtually ZERO discrimination, especially if they're white, they feel the need to inflate statistics and create strawmen to attack. Women not entering STEM is the choice of individual women; NOT some grand male conspiracy to keep science as an all boys club. Hell, I love how many women are in my bio courses, more than men actually, but there's nothing stopping them at all. Same with the wage gap and all these other ludicrous statistics. I guess being a working-class Black man makes you a bit less sensitive when upper middle-class white girls bitch about the patriarchy. Please.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
As a woman in a stem field I have found it is less about education (there is more women enrolled in sciences than men at some college campuses) and more about coworker bias. There are several people I have worked with (mostly older men) who would ABSOLUTELY never take anything I had said or even argue points they knew werent correct (I.e something simple like acetylation or methylation of DNA-like they would say it doesnt happen or doesnt exist or doesnt cause activation of replication) They would wait until another male coworker had agreed and decided to back my mechanism or structure or whatever I had decided to talk about. There is bias in the sciences but I think it is slowly starting to disappear as the older generations of scientist are retiring.
[–]Lord_Wrath 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. In Germany being foreign (and brown) is still a hindrance in terms of finding lab work and practical experience due to the old, conservative dicks who refuse to retire from the departments. That said, nowadays this bigoted behavior is virtually dead and/or quite frowned upon in many ways as people in the sciences tend to be more left leaning in general. That said, it's becoming more and more a nonissue yet it's become a rallying point for people. Crazy

That’s because the one with the degree just spent four years being told how special they are and how the world owes them decadence on a silver platter.

Because STEM is hard and demanding. She'd rather just blame men for all her problems that she's brought upon herself, instead of trying and possibly failing. then she might have to be responsible for once in her life. But, then again, probably not because she has a vagina and a man somewhere will take care of her, for that reason alone.
[–]PumpkinFeet 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't understand this at all. At no point does she claim she was interested in the STEM fields but didn't get in due to misogyny.

Women just aren't as good at math/science as men. Period.
Also, remove "Asian females" from women, and it skews even further.

I've also heard the argument posed that mandatory minimum hiring laws potentially keep us from getting the best and brightest (based exclusively on merit) in our STEM fields.
I can't wait until we have the technology to introduce an interview avatar. Not only could we save a commute, but hiring would be based solely on relevant factors. It would still give interviewers an opportunity to meet a candidate "face to face", so to speak, without giving them any insight to their race, gender, or appearance in general. Then we won't have to force companies to hire potentially less qualified candidates, and we also won't have to worry about jobs being awarded or withheld on unjust grounds.

This’ll probably get downvoted, but if STEM isn’t her passion, why should she get a degree in it? She shouldn’t have to in order to prove herself to people like the commenter.
It’s like a putting a news reporter on blast for only saying that there’s not enough teachers instead of becoming teacher a himself.
Yes, it’s a good comparison. One reports the news. OP reports gender disparity and the like across the board.

I think the point of the guy is exactly "see, many of you simply aren't interested, it's not sexism".
[–]ForgotYouTexted 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Okay, that I can see being the case. I might have been too tired to logically think of their intent as anything other than what I saw.
[–]Dankelpuff 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A reporter would have numbers backing up the fact that "there arent enough teachers" this woman on the other hand chose to study "gender studies" which is a field that mysandrist feminist love.
While not having any facts backing up her claims she also chose to study as far away from STEM as possible.
It has been disproven about a million times that women dont have an equal chance in any field. In fact more women who apply for STEM or any other high payed fields are accepted. if 90 men apply for a field where 10 women apply and there are 10 positions to fill then 4 women and 6 men might get in. This means MORE women than men got accepted percentage wise.
If more women applied more women would be accepted.
She is simple a man hater.

Because you can't eat your passion.
If your family isn't fucking loaded, maybe do art in your spare time instead of making it your vocation. From 9 to 5 you need to pay rent.
[–]ForgotYouTexted 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I beg to differ. My passion is in STEM. So, I do something I love and there’s monetary gain too. If OP wanted to, she could make a career out of gender studies, she’d just have to work stupidly hard.
Should she have picked a more logical major and double majored or gotten a minor in gender studies, gotten a job and helped from her position in the company she ended up working for? Maybe, but who’s to say that’s not what she did.
[–]flee_market 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If your passion happens to be something lucrative then great, but 99% of the time in these discussions "Why should I have to do STEM instead of my passion" translates to "my passion is eating and watching Netflix" or "my passion is making geographical shapes out of mashed potatoes" or some shit
[–]ForgotYouTexted 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, yeah, that’s the practicality aspect to it. If my passion was gender studies, there’s no way in hell I’d major in it, maybe minor. But it works for some people.
[+]Vlad_the_imp_hailer -10 points-9 points-8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Sorry, that analogy doesn’t match on any level.
She would have to be a reporter that has learned from journalism school that the reason she studies journalism isn’t because she wants to become a reporter but that she rather would like to become a teacher but people hate journalism students and won’t allow them to become teachers. She then goes on reporting about how there aren’t enough teachers because of a (non existent) discrimination against journalism students.
Or something.
It gets really weird really quickly if you try to shoehorn that analogy.
[–]NotThatEasily 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There's no analogy needed.
It goes something like this:
I'm interested in social issues and I've of my friends suggested I check out women's studies.
My professor told me that the reason I didn't go into STEM and make more money isn't because I made a conscious choice, but because the patriarchy brainwashed me into only caring about womanly things.
I must now protest this patriarchy and be mad at every man that goes into STEM, because somehow a man in those fields stops women from going into those fields.
I'll tell all of my friends to join me in women's studies to learn more about the patriarchy and how it's stopping women from going into STEM fields.
Repeat as necessary to create a ton of women with degrees that are only useful to teach more people getting that same degree.
Also let’s be real. They took are either a psych major (durrr with a minor in art because I plan on doing art therapy) or gws . Both mainly require you just read and write papers, while stem requires technical thought. While these idiots where out getting hammer and then only study for a couple hours and complaining how much work they have to do im out here pulling the 24 hours because I didn’t have time to do my os program due to studying and taking finals

Here's the thing - this is double edged in a way since you can technically have an opinion about something (her wishing there was a higher % of women in STEM) without having done the work. I wish that that there wasn't such a discord between the police and the general public, but I am a piece of shit that would never volunteer to be in the line of fire because I am a pussy, so I can't speak on the matter as I am not nor will not be a police officer.
However, I completely agree with the posters in here that you should be the change you seek in the world. It would both help inspire others and guarantee that at least one person fits the criteria that you're hoping for.

I don’t have a women’s studies degree and my opinion is mostly based on circumstantial evidence but I will say parents tend to push their kids towards different things based on gender. Those early inclinations build different skills and interests. Obviously not 100% causal as I’m sure there are plenty of male and female engineers who played House growing up but while part of it is nature and the two gendered minds being different another part of it is nurture. Blame the parents though, not society. Blame your mom for not getting you more interest in Math vs. Dress up.
[–]quirkney 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Personally I’ve seen parents mostly lead their kids towards whatever they enjoy, which makes sense because they can teach them about it. I know a lot about drag racing because of my dad, and my mother was hardcore on good work ethic (she’s one of those who thinks a fun weekend is cleaning/organizing/yard work/etc).
I (a girl) picked up graphic design on my own at 11, neither parent knew much about it but were happy to help me pursue my interests. One brother showed interest in music/cooking, and other in history/politics, they both got the same support.
I agree that both nature and nurture impacts us a ton. I just think majority play at a young age doesn’t impact career choice that much
