It's the same fucking shit as with the British scientist Tim Hunt. He jokingly said women cry faster in work environments and boom witchhunt.

They do though... multiple times I've seen women cry over work/interview stress. Only time I heard of a man crying at work it was because his wife left him. Not even work related. Gods, is it so difficult to admit that men and women are different? Not superior or inferior. Just fucking different.

Speaking of differences, if men and women and blacks and whites and asians and hispanics and indians are all exactly the same, and therefore interchangeable, because "race doesn't exist" and "gender is a social construct", then what do we need 'diversity' and affirmative action for?

Muh imaginary discrimination
[–]gapball 38 points39 points40 points 6 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Well, to be fair, the AGENDA is to say that all these things are equal. Which, in all honestly should be accepted. The gender contruct thing can go a little far ("Did you just assume my gender??!!" and "I identify as blind, dragon, hobo- kin") and is a different conversation but when it comes to race and men and women, even trangender people....yeah, it should go without saying that we should all be approached as equals. NOT SAYING that men and women aren't different, but in a proffesional and societal setting, they should be exact equals.
In short, no race or gender is lesser or greater than another, just respectively different in their own way, as most species in the animal kingdom are.
This is coming from someone who is banned from /r/shitredditsays for offending them.
HOWEVER, if you are going to pretend that discrimination doesn't exist, you can just read this thread to prove yourself wrong, let alone talk to any woman or minority about how they are treated in the workplace (won't always be answers there, see Lil' Wayne interview)
Not saying it is always a thing but it IS definitely still an issue. I can name at least 10 racists that I know and a few misogynists off the top of my head and I live in the super duper progressive Pacific Northwest.

NOT SAYING that men and women aren't different, but in a proffesional and societal setting, they should be exact equals.
Isn't that exactly what fired dude said? That men and women are different and the fact that their are more men in tech than women isn't a travesty or women being held down, but just a result of those differences. He wasn't saying "No women in tech!", he was saying lack of gender diversity at Google was not actually a problem but a result of gender differences.
[–]AnExercise4TheReader 22 points23 points24 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It is important to note that he said the differences in men and women was part of the reason for the difference in representation.
He's far too intelligent to suggest that the difference is entirely due to one thing or another, but rather a mix of phenomena, one of which (gender differences) everyone refuses to discuss for fear of being called a sexist, mysognistic pig that gets fired.
[–]salsa_yam16 points 6 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
This is the biggest issue today. There can't be any logical, honest discussion around any slightly controversial topic (race, religion, gender etc etc etc) without the fear of being labelled with some hate-related term. It's scares me. It's so easy to do, and once you've been degraded to a "bigot" then it's like they've got their fingers in their ears and singing la la la.
[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Equality is a false god. Our society is one of hierarchy and inequality and that's how it works best. It's just one of those thing people say with out asking why when they say all things should be equal? Why should they? Think about it. When you were In school and got good grades do you think you should have points taken off and given to the failing student? When he slept all class and you tried hard to pass? Just in the name of equality and fairness.
The NBA is 70% black should we give white college athletes extra stats and a few inches on their vertical in the name of in equality? I think that's a bit ridiculous we all know blacks are just better at basketball on average. Does saying that make me assume blacks are the superior race. Obviously not.
That's why phrases like this annoy me
In short, no race or gender is lesser or greater than another.
In what aspect? Only a very small minority would assume they are better at everything then another race or another gender, but am I a bad person for assuming certain races and genders are good at some things and bad at other things. Even when the evidence clearly proves this.
The problem with this is we are telling people like women they should be just as good at math and coding as men. When all the men succeed and they don't what do they think? They are a loser and that's very disheartening. Instead we're should be telling people to peruse what they are natural good at. Of course their are exceptions to this, but exceptions are just that exceptions and no one wants to prevent anyone from doing what they are good at because of their race, gender, ect.
The fact is that no one is refusing to hire a women because she's a women when she's completely qualified for the job and would help make them tons of money. Same with race. A black accountant saves you money why wouldn't you hire him? Not of corse there are people who do discriminate, but who cares? Why would you as a black guy want to work for a racist or a sexist as a women? Those companies will probably go under anyways. Now do people think that all companies are sexiest and racist? That is the real question I certainly have more hope my follow man then that.
[–]andthendirksaid 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're misinterpreting what most reasonable people are saying they want. I do believe in equality for all regardless of the gender, race or orientation etc. of that person. I do not believe in equity unless it comes about naturally, meaning legislation to that end is wrong.
The simple difference is the belief in equality of opportunity, that no one should be disadvantaged for immutable characteristics. That's the American way.
In contrast, affirmative action and other initiatives are supported by those who believe not in enforcement of equal chance to prove one's self but enforcement of equitable outcome regardless of the results of meritocracy.
The terminology confuses people and misrepresents what many actually believe, those like yourself, those like myself. I see people who agree arguing because of a lack of clarity, and its a waste to all involved.
[–]gapball 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think you may have a misunderstanding of what I was trying to define as "equality" a failing student is obviously not doing as well as an honor student and the fact that black people tend to be better at certain sports than white people doesn't in any way mean that white people should be given a handicap. I feel that you entirely misread or misunderstood what I was defining as equality. I meant at face value as a person. From one ti the other. At no point did I say that one race or gender should be given a stepping stool, booster seat, or any other literal or figurative handicap in a certain field. I simply meant, that in the eyes of an employer, they should look only to the most qualified indvidual, whatever the gender or race and in most fields that most certainly *could * be a woman or minority. The fact that women statistically don't go for certain jobs doesn't mean they couldn't qualify if they didn't strive to achieve it.
Already touched on that and accidentally ranted without realizing I haven't gotten to this part yet in the quoting context.
What phrase?
Clearly not a bad person because I explicitly stated multiple times that genders and races are different in their own respective ways.
Exceptions, yes. You just said that they CAN BE just as good at math and coding. So if society gave them the same drive, ambition, and tools to WANT to pursue a career in this field as men, then they could even out the playing field. Are you saying that the fact that IT is mostly consistent of men is not something that could be construed as somewhat off-putting to somebody that was raised to believe that girls to this and boys to that?
Right, maybe. Maybe nobody is refusing to hire somebody based in their gender or race, maybe they are. And if they are, then they are a piece of shit and nobody deserves to have to work for them in the first place, again leading me back to my original point where I felt you grossly misunderstood what I was saying.
Not saying you are wrong in anything you said btw, and not trying to be rude or come off as a D-bag (I can be, I know) I am just trying to clearly state that from, at least my point of view, it seems that you have my words and context mistaken.

This is actually Ron Paul's argument when people drag him through the mud for saying he would've voted against the Civil Rights Act. His reasoning was that people are people and we all have the same god given rights, we don't need the government to tell us that, and that programs like affirmative action and the census force us into divided groups and keep us from being a truly equal and colorblind. Why does the government lump us into different groups if we're all supposed to be the same?
[–]AWFUL_COCK 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
And yet, before the government protected god given rights via the Civil Rights Act, equality was not the law of the land. So Paul, and libertarian thought in general, proves itself to be ahistorical and silly.
[–]peese-of-cawffee 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Did I, or another libertarian for that matter, ever say that the way things were before the CRA were right or even tolerable? The argument is that legally placing people into groups perpetuates the idea that we are different, and the concept that we have to have a law to force people to be decent to each other is just proof that people are still pieces of shit, they're just not allowed to do it openly now. It covered up the symptoms instead of treating the disease.

[–]GanondalfTheWhite 25 points26 points27 points 6 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link
Trying to answer seriously. I don't necessarily agree with it - but the general idea is that society in general (which is a majority white) disproportionately favors white people in day-to-day events. White people tend to hire white people more, they tend to associate more with white people, they just often subconsciously default to the white option when other options are on the table. And it's not necessarily a conscious thing, it's just what happens. People are more comfortable with the same kind of people they grew up with.
And since the majority of people in the US are white, it means that the majority of decisions are made by people who are going to skew in favor of other white people, which all results in a trend of minorities being underrepresented. It's nothing intentionally malicious, it's just how it goes. For example, if a white hiring manager in an office environment sees two equal resumes, one from a James and one from a Jamaal, it's more likely that James is going to get the call in for an interview.
Affirmative action tries to take steps to compensate for the bias. The idea is that life tends to kick minorities in the nuts more than whites, so AA is supposed to act as a protective cup for them. There are those who argue that instead it just acts as additional kicks to white-people nuts to balance it out.
I don't really have a stance on the issue. Just trying to relay the best explanations that I've heard. It's not about differences between the races. It's about the differences in the way that society affects them.
[–]unneccessary_c 22 points23 points24 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"Like additional kicks to white-people nuts to balance it out." That's a good way of putting it. I'm a mutt of about 7 different European white descents and my girlfriend is half Mexican, half German descent. We went to the same college, had similar grades, financial situations, and all that, but she got a scholarship for being a minority and got half of her tuition paid for by the government. That's just silly to me.
[–]hachiko007 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
but the general idea is that society in general (which is a majority white)
Bullshit. In the US, but not in the world. Source, I live in Asia, not many whites here.
AA is also bullshit. Sounds good on paper but it's always misused and never understood. I have worked for women that hired more women just because they wanted more. The same university hired more blacks just to "even it out" a bit. Guess what, they were all SHIT and completely unqualified. Racist bullshit right there. AA means if you have two people equally qualified, you should consider the minority, but it never works that way. It's almost always, we have a qualified white and a unqualified black, let's hire the black guy just to be PC fuckwads. Look at the fire departments around the US, staffed with unqualified blacks and women.

To add on this, see this study, made 7 years ago in a country that did not have a legal framework for affirmative action:
https://www.povertyactionlab.org/evaluation/discrimination-hiring-and-anonymous-cvs-france-cv-anonymes
"when resumes were made anonymous, participating firms were less likely to interview and hire minority candidates"
[–]KaiRaiUnknown 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Iirc there was one sone recently where feminists wanted a gender blind study to prove that men are only hired off male named CVs. So they removed names and genders and the hiring managers overwhelmingly picked male CVs.
[–]Paladin327 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Or even better, a month or so ago, in australia some companies tried a thing where resumes had names and any gender signifiers removed to stop companies fromdiscriminating against women and not hiring them. Turns out less women were getting interviews and men who were more qualified were hired more often to the point wjere the people condicting the stufy had to put it on pause as it was making things worse. And noone dojng the study made any connections there

It's only an assumption you would have to accept if you could somehow look into the past here in America and see what happened....like as if there was some sort of book or something with tons of facts and perspectives on how these things have played out amd how they would have continued to play out had it not been for certain reforms. And if there was any way to see if those reforms have had any impact on society whether they be good or bad, seperated from your personal point of view.
If only a man had written down his story from the past. Whelp we shall continue to wait for his story to come out and then we can judge.
[–]Istencsaszar 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That works for the race argument, but not for the sexism arguments for example, because women are the majority in most countries
[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Minorities are historically difficult to work with. Because of anti-discrimination laws, they have a lot of power in the workplace. Any slight they see could turn into a massive lawsuit. They're also difficult to fire because it looks like you're getting rid of minorities, which isn't legal. So some hiring managers try to avoid them because it's not worth the hassle. Other managers bring in extra to balance out quotas. It's all a big mess
[–]Noshamina 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That was pretty well put. I'll give you an upvote
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Because the left now believes in equality of outcome not of opportunty. Meaning that if you had the same chance to go to a trade school or even college as the rich white guy, that is not enough because if you decided to go to college and study philosophy or drop out and shoot dope while the white guy went to trade school, you both should get the same pay in the end

Equal =/= Same
Different words for different concepts.
[–]Theseuseus 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
That is actually a really interesting point.
I've never thought of it that way.
I mean, obviously people are different. Just fucking look at us. Different cultures, different backgrounds, different everything.
The thing is those differences ABSOLUTELY should not preclude some from work they are qualified to do. Ever. That's what the whole equality thing should be about.
I've just never thought of the flawed logic like that before.
"Everything is a social construct." "Race doesn't exist." "We need more representation of (X group) in the workplace."
Either race exists and we need to do something about discrimination or it doesn't and we don't.
Either women and men are exactly the same and should be thought of as interchangeable or millions of years of human evolution and artificial selection has lead to inherent differences between the sexes and that's perfectly ok.
Your comment clicked an argument I've been trying to articulate for a long time, thank you.
[–]AWFUL_COCK 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
You've set up a false choice here. To say that "race is socially constructed" is not the same as saying "there are no physical/biological tendencies exhibited by groups of people." It means that the lines we draw between ranges of traits are arbitrary, and the history of racial categories proves this. We began with the three racial categories: caucasoid, negroid, and mongoloid (not my word choice, believe me). Middle eastern races were included in the caucasoid category along with Anglo saxons, but now the number of racial categories has increased exponentially - we don't suddenly have more varieties of people, though - we constructed these categories on an arbitrary selection of physical, national, and cultural "traits".
Further, saying "race is a social construct" is not the same as saying "race doesn't exist" (it does exist, and it is socially constructed) and it certainly does not have any effect on whether or not discrimination does or does not exist.
Again, the choice here as you present it is dubious. We can simultaneously believe that of course there are different tendencies between the sexes, but that these differences do not change our imperative to shape society to be as equitable for one individual as it is to every other. This can mean that in the case for women, society ought to be shaped to afford them the same ease of access to a range of rights and privileges we see as central to a just society that men have.
edit: some grammars
[–]EternalStudent 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I hate myself for saying this, but you know gender is a social construct simply means that the social expectations of what it means for a woman to be a woman and a man to be a man are social constructs, right? Thing is, these people admit this all the time. But they only admit it when the 'difference' allows them to paint men as inferior. You see it all the time from that set--the future is female, the 'end of men', toxic masculinity, fragile masculinity, mansplaining, etc.
They are fine admitting that men and women are different, but only if that difference always paints men as the inferior party.

Time and time again, they show you that you should never cave to their hive mind. Because they don't actually care about what you did, they care about telling everyone just how upset they are until the next thing upsets them.
This is what will happen when you employ children, though. I imagine a huge chunk of their workforce is pretty fresh out of college.

I mean, the government filed a lawsuit against Google for wage discrimination which is currently ongoing. The women were primarily protesting the inequal pay and the fact that Google continues to refuse to release current wage information. The government's lawsuit is based on the available information from 2015 and the disparities found there. This whole outburst with the memo is happening in the middle of the lawsuit. So there's plenty of reason for women to be mad at them.

Tho gotta say, I fucking hate my IT department - I know exactly how you fix a problem, but I'm not allowed to do that so I gotta hand it over to IT and they end up wiping my hard drive and I lose all my files. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS REINSTALL WINDOWS!!!!
[–]Douchehelm 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Your IT department is used to people claiming to know computers and a lot of those people know jack shit.
I don't know how your IT department works but many of them just install a premade image on your harddrive when it's time to reinstall, they don't sit through a complete windows setup. Maybe next time you've learned to keep a backup. At my job we're not allowed to keep important work files in our own computers just for this reason, and for security. Shared network drives exist for a reason, and can even be accessed from home through a VPN.
[–]billbrown96 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
IT was supposed to give me network drive access specifically for backup purposes - I'd been asking them for weeks to get that setup. Then the OS gets corrupted, they just throw out the hard drive and give me a new w computer. That computer had network drive access (too fucking late tho)

We are just following policy, we don't know that you are knowledgeable enough to potentially fix your own issues but even if we did we have to be held accountable, we ask for tickets made because that is how management judges our performance, small number of tickets or tickets with short length, we get outsourced and lose our jobs, large number of long length tickets, we get to keep our job.
We don't do it to piss you off, we do it because other wise we are jobless and we have our own families to feed and as a guy who struggles to get IT work in the north east of England, we'll do anything to try and keep our job.

Accusations of rape from male gaze and manspreading drop to 0 for an unprecedented 24 hours rather than the usual 600+ complaint daily average.
Male Google staff now no longer working in fear or discomfort figure out how to double fibre optics speed capability in just a day.
When asked, David said. "Once I felt I was safe to uncross my legs... I just did." He further noted. "After the testical pain was relieved it just came to me like an epiphany, why dont we add this material to fibre optic cable?"
It is reported 3 days later David was fired for accidentally referring to Frank as he, as Frank only goes by perzon/humax non binary octo gender kilogram fluid metric pronouns.

There's a handful of subs that have blanket bans on users who have participated in certain other subs.
[–]TheRealBaseborn 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Which is extra dumb because people could be posting arguments that favor their position. Not everyone who posts in a thread is subscribed to the sub and not everyone who is subscribed necessarily agrees with the subject. Hell, some people just wander in from r/all and aren't even aware what sub they're in sometimes.
Case in point - I'm not subscribed to this sub, yet here I am thanks to r/all.

I was banned for not even arguing. They posted something that was like, "Study finds nearly half of women are gamers!"
And I just pointed out that their definition of gamers is unfair and leading to a skewed interpretation. That the study included people who play mobile games, like Farmville and Candy Crush... That standalone consoles and PC games are still overwhelmed by men.
I then got pounced on by, of course, people pointing out exceptions, like how they game all the time... Or that maybe the reason you rarely hear a woman playing CSGO is because they are too afraid to talk... As if, HALF the population of CSGO is a silent half of the population never talking lol
[–]CatastrophicMango 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't know why they have to do this, just outright pretend woman are at least equal to men in every single minuscule aspect.
Like, in what way does it matter that women aren't interested Counter Strike? How do they get upset over that? If you can turn that into an issue you truly have nothing to complain about.
[–]duffmanhb 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, it's soooo utterly bizarre from these people... Like they take it as an insult when men just like to do something other than women... that it somehow has to do with inferiority or some shit... Like, why do they have the need to also be like men when it comes to video games? It doesn't mean men are better... If anything it shows a flaw in men... That men are genetically wired to want battles, competition, fighting, warfare, and so on... And video games act as a supplement to fill that drive. It doesn't mean men are better somehow.
Luckily, most reasonable women also understand that there are inherent differences between the genders and it doesn't mean one is better than the other. In fact, most women I talk to who aren't purple haired overweight radical feminists do admit that in many ways women have it much much easier. It's just that there are differences, many of which aren't a big deal. Why the constant fight to insist men and women are identical in everyway and the only reason for the differences is some sort of oppression going on.
What if... What if, hear me out... That the reason society fosters genders in certain areas over others is because it's more effective? That successful societies, through social natural selection, realize that it's best to create frameworks which foster and develop the genders natural strengths... That the reason society places a little favor over men in high stress and high demanding jobs, isn't because of sexism and giving men all the high paying jobs, but just because men's natural ability from our evolution to be highly competitive and resiliant to high degrees of stress and hardship mean they are on average better for those roles... So society is more effeceint when it favors that... Same with nursing and teaching... Maybe women are just naturally better at emotional and social connections than men, because of their ability to care for children, that they naturally do better in those environments so society builds frameworks to foster that.
Me too, and I've literally never once posted there.

They better be fairly sane because they're a subreddit and not a sub-tumblr or whatever goes on at that site.

You can't cross post there so anything that gains traction on other subs that doesn't fit their agenda can't be posted there so they can have their safe space all for themselves

Thank you! Fucking hell I've posted a bunch of shit that makes me look like am asshole retard but banning me isn't going to do shit, the respect of my peers is more important and sometimes I will go back and change my post because of how embarrassing it is.
Don't use YouTube as an example of retard posters dominating the comments section, just look at your reaction to it, you already acknowledge them as retards, and that's the price of being a retard in the internet. Expose the retarded shit and take a look at how many retards there are in the world instead of trying to foster game conversation that intellectuals want no part of. Focus on exposing the stupidity and then actually try to have a conversation, or don't.

Consider the source: Kelly Ellis, who told NPR that women were staying home because they felt uncomfortable, doesn't work at Google anymore. She left in 2014 after she felt she was sexually harassed. She has no first hand knowledge of this fact and a very big axe to grind.

Seriously, especially since they work in tech. It's called facebook, faggot, of course they're still in contact.
I have at least a dozen people as friends on Facebook from a job I had 15 years ago and I'm not one of those people with 500 FB friends. They make up a large part of my feed.

[–]magnetic_couch 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Another key point is that she said they stayed home; not indicating if they were taking time off or just working from home. Tech companies usually have very effective work from home procedures for developers.

So, I found the original article and a specific "quote":
Another software engineer who used to work for Google, Kelly Ellis, says some women who still work at the company stayed home Monday because the memo made them "uncomfortable going back to work."
So, no count on the amount of women that stayed home.
I've got a feeling this is getting blown out of proportion.
I still agree with the point being made though.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Being uncomfortable is a feeling though.
[–]DutchmanDavid 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What?
He's saying they let their feelings get in the way of work. In other words, proving the memo right through their actions.

Interestingly, the diversity memo itself says:
Focus on psychological safety, not just race/gender diversity. We should focus on psychological safety, which has shown positive effects and should (hopefully) not lead to unfair discrimination. We need psychological safety and shared values to gain the benefits of diversity
Focus on psychological safety, not just race/gender diversity.
We should focus on psychological safety, which has shown positive effects and should (hopefully) not lead to unfair discrimination.
We need psychological safety and shared values to gain the benefits of diversity

The explanation here is really simple. Its '-ist' to say that people are better at different things and biologically different, so the only possible explanations left for why things aren't 50/50 men and women in tech like the population is, is that there must be institutional unfairness. These people are idiots.
Meanwhile I'm waiting for the uproar about the racial disparity in the NBA in comparison to the world population that legislates short fat white people like myself into a bench spot on the warriors, because it surely isn't biological factors that make NBA players better than me.

[–]Sharobob 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Odds are good that they have unlimited vacation and personal days anyway. Silicon Valley companies tend to do that. So they probably weren't breaking any rules by staying home.
The denial is that they failed to not be exactly like the manifesto was saying
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean they certainly did try to use their pussy to get preferential treatment, thats the entire point of the memo to which this is in reference. There are all sorts of initiatives to bring women into tech and to make them more comfortable in the industry because its full of 'toxic masculinity' and antagonistic culture which women function terribly in, so theyre always quitting / sueing / complaining that the environment needs to change. This guys point was that this is bullshit, and that there are lots of reaosns that women are 'under represented' in tech that don't come down to institutionalized unfairness, that maybe they just aren't as good at it for various reasons and thats OK, not a problem that needs fixing. No one gives a shit that HR is 70% female or pediatrics or nursing or whatever, and women certainly dont care that garbagemen and coal miners are all men...

Is pussypassdenied an echo chamber like T_D? Or is it all inclusive like the karmicjustice reddit(forgot the actual name)? The reason I ask is because I looked up the NPR article on it, and it says some women (could be any number) didn't show up to work that day because the memo was citing "biological differences" being the reason that less women were in the software and engineering fields (or software engineering?). If it were me, (i'm a dude) and I worked in a company where there's only 31% dudes and 69% females, and culturally it's not expected that i be involved with software but it culturally is expected that men be involved with software, and then then I read that memo, HOLY FUCK I WOULD BE SO PISSED. I'd still show up to work, and I'd be really confrontational about it, but that's me. i wouldn't be suprised if the women didn't show up because they felt uncomfortable (which is what a source in the company said), or they did it out of protest, or because they just felt like they were having a breakdown because even at Google, where they're supposed to feel welcome in Google's kooky progressive atmosphere, still FUCKING STILL somebody sends out a memo to everyone (or at least a lot of people) saying "welp, there'd be more women but men are just biologically better for software" when there is no empirical evidence to suggest this, only cultural expectations. I mean, wouldn't you be pissed?
edit:forgot a phrase
edit again: So, I just realized that we can read the WHOLE MEMO! The NPR article I read was surprisingly cursory and only included snippets (Bad NPR! Bad!). I am going to read the whole memo and come back with maybe a different opinion. I appreciate all of the responses that were mature, whether you agreed or not. This a greater conversation for sure.
[–]Jdwonder 51 points52 points53 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
"welp, there'd be more women but men are just biologically better for software"
Where in the document did it say that?
He argued that biological differences between women and men lead to men and women having different preferences in general, which results in fewer women wanting to go into tech fields. He specifically said that this does not mean that the women who choose to go into tech fields are less qualified.
[–]Sarkhan_Bup 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, my fuck up. i read an NPR article on it that was surprisingly short and din't know that we can actually read the whole memo. I'm gonna check it out and put an edit on my original post. Thank you btw!
[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's not at all what my take away was. He didn't say that men are biologically better at programming. Instead, he said that men are biologically more inclined to pursue programming.
It was a complaint against affirmative action. We don't need a 50/50 gender split in all jobs because the two genders tend to lean towards different roles. There are certainly exceptions to that, but there are biological differences that lead more men to choose programming jobs.
[–]Sarkhan_Bup 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah the 50/50 split idea is a very arbitrary number. I guess i'm more worried about the idea of women moving moving into a job field where they'd feel unwelcome, only to read this memo, which might be understood better as just pure research in a different context, but in the context of a memo that's sent to a lot of people, just convinces the men that they're likely to be better, and makes the women feel less welcome. Does that make sense? Like maybe the person that wrote it only brings it up in conversation if anyone asks about it. And even if I was the person that read the memo and wa spissed, I wouldn't want that person fired. That doesn't make any sense to me either. The idea of having a converstaion about it is what makese sense to me.
[–]thebedshow 43 points44 points45 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
It was from a random person in the company which employs 10s of thousands who was fired. Also your summation of the memo is off. So no I wouldn't be pissed, except maybe the fact that my company felt it had to fire someone over a well sourced opinion.
[–]Bizzyguy 40 points41 points42 points 6 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
Why are you bitching about echo chambers when Google literally fired someone for having a dissenting opinion?
[–]slyweazal 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
Anybody would be fired for posting that memo in their workplace.
[–]LeapYearFriend 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, as much as I agree with the memo and think Google is completely in the wrong here - I do have to agree with your comment.
Whether or not it's true, it's simply not work appropriate. It's one of those things that even the coolest or most relaxed of bosses will look at, squint their eyes and make a pained "Oooohh..." sound.
Because - shame as it is - being right or making a good point does not grant you immunity and is not a magical save-all in the real world.
[–]knowedge 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
So there being a discussion forum at work for these kinds of issues is a trap?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Actually making a shared doc accessible to about 60k people is not a discussion forum. It's standing on a box and shouting at everyone indiscriminantly.
[–]Roook36 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I think a lot of the people complaining about him being fired don't understand how a job in the real world works. I've had coworker's fired just for saying they were frustrated to have to go to work on their Facebook. When you are employed by a company you sign certain paperwork agreeing to abide by their policies and if you don't then you go see HR or are terminated. It's like a TOS.
I can't think of any large companies that would have been ok with this. The guy tried to be Jerry Maguire and send out a manifesto to everyone and the exact same thing happened to him.
Tl;dr if you criticize your company and it becomes public you're fired. That's employment 101.
It wasn't a dissenting opinion. There was a lot of research involved and it makes valid points. If anything Google should have kept him. I think also, though, you have to put yourself in other people's shoes before sending out a memo like that. I think send that out as a mass memo was short-sighted. It sends its own message of "everyone needs to know this."
[–]onewordmemory 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
(i'm a dude) not expected that i be involved with software but it culturally is expected that men be involved with software
(i'm a dude)
not expected that i be involved with software but it culturally is expected that men be involved with software
i think you're confused.
jokes aside and assuming that's just a typo..
the memo did not talk about cultural expectations, much less anyone's inclination to follow them or force them on others. it talked about obvious biological difference (from physical to psychological, all cited) and how they may affect career choice and performance. it made no absolute statements about who should get hired for what. in fact it made a point to say we should not judge individual's qualifications/performance based on their gender's average. the purpose of the memo was mainly to point out that any such discussion, even when backed by cited sources, gets absolutely shut down and participants shamed for no rational reason. which is exactly what happened...
and then then I read that memo, HOLY FUCK I WOULD BE SO PISSED
you use this "im a man and id have the same reaction" example to justify the reaction pointed out in this thread. so im gonna use this same thing to say, yes you are a man, and you'd still be out of line if you reacted that way.
my own work is split roughly half and half between engineering department and technical writing department (i write software/api documentation and documentation-related tools). the first is roughly 80% male and the second is roughly 80% female (as rough average over the course of my somewhat short career). if someone told me women were more inclined to pursue technical writing over men i would just shrug about it. it would in no way make me feel like i dont belong or like im some kind of fraud being in this field.
now if someone told me i shouldnt be in this field because im a dude, id tell them to fuck off, but again i wouldnt skip the next day for "emotional trauma". but if someone simply wanted to start a conversation of why that is, id welcome it.
in our day and age there's a heavy push towards women moving into previously male-dominant careers, and countrary to popular belief, most men coudlnt care less. most even welcome it. however any time there's a push for men to get into female-dominant position, feminists treat it as a threat. it's this massive double standard that's getting all the backlash in this and other threads, not some giant misogynistic conspiracy.
edit: sick, got banned from twoX for this post
See, that's what I don't get. I feel like you're making a lot of valid points, and I just feel inclined to look up more info on what you said. Banned? That's dumb. The conversation is what we NEED. I also agree that regardless of being a man or a woman, just not showing up to work is very unprofessional. I'm sure I made a lot of typos. I do still think that in the Nature versus Nurture scheme of things, we can do better to tell males and females as we raise them that pursue whatever they want. I mean, we still have the pink aisle for girls in every Wal-Mart. I also just realized that the memo is actually readable (released), so I will check that out. The NPR article I read did not include the full memo. It was a very cursory report, in hindsight.
[–]Denadias 43 points44 points45 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I'd still show up to work, and I'd be really confrontational about it, but that's me.
To whom ? The person writing it was fired.
Do you have any idea what you're talking about ?
[–]Janders2124 34 points35 points36 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No he doesn't. He's just a fucking retard.
[–]Denadias 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Both sides said many others felt like they did
Felt what ? What are you replying to ?
which means some other people could be enclined to bring it up at lunch or something.
Inclined* and do you really think that they would bring it up at lunch when someone JUST got fired for it.
Have you ever worked with other people?
Have you ever spoken to others with out going straight to insults ?
Yes. I don't agree that the person should be fired. I would be confrontational with the writer of the well informed opinion and tell them that it is not memo material. It is the center of a large conversation about how much Nurture is playing in the Nature versus Nurture spectrum, at least to the extent that it produces more of less of a gender in a certain field.
[–]hubertCumberdanes 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You should read the memo, what you understand to be in it is different to what actually is in it.
Here is an actual quote from his memo:
Differences in distributions of traits between men and women may in part explain why we don't have 50% representation of women in tech and leadership.
Note how he said "in part".
You're right. I need to check this memo out. Thanks, person!

Then you're a fucking child.
Did your sheltered ass not learn that words can't hurt you? Suck it up and move on.
Words do hurt. Everybody knows that, including you. The saying is mostly used as a way for people to sturdy themselves mentally in a time of high stress. Like, you just say it to yourself, and you feel stronger.

I read this article a week ago the dude had an 8 page manifesto, probably written on work time, about why women aren't fit to be software engineers. I'll be damned because I studied engineering and the top of my class consisted of mostly women. This sub is an echo chamber reminiscent of t_d and id ask anyone reading this who is pissed off to do some self reflection. Would you say this shit to hard working women you know and care about like a mom, sister, or relative?
Edit: if you'd like to read it and form your own opinion here: http://gizmodo.com/exclusive-heres-the-full-10-page-anti-diversity-screed-1797564320
my comment was quick and assumptive and definitely does not cover the full scope of this paper or the issues at hand. It was I quick response to a lot of the blind disparagement of women that is normalized by this sub all of the time. This sub fosters a negative culture and attitude toward women in general.

No. That's not the "memo". Is a #fakenews version of the memo from Gizmodo. We all can see how "rigorous" you are with your "citations" LOL.
Fake news site Gizmodo (previously owned by Gawker) published an edited James Damore memo. What were they hiding?
You can read the full memo with charts and citations below.

I can't really help you if you haven't read my whole comment, where I mention all of this is not even relevant, as the underlying problem is completely outside of this guy's scope (and yours, coincidentally).
[–]knowedge 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You started out your comment with 5+ lies based on that media narrative, so why should I give you any ground with the ideas you concoct out of these lies, when I can just attack the basis of your argument and let it all fall in on itself?
[–]Source_or_gtfo 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
He doesn't cite sources.
He does, gizmodo removed them to make him look worse, pretty scummy move on their part imo. He says "may" a lot because the burden of proof on him is merely to make a sufficiently reasonable case, it is google who are assuming certainty in their views and using that to justify openly explicitly discriminatory policies.
This sub fosters a negative culture and attitude toward women in general.
I actually agree, yet it is a drop in the ocean compared to the negative culture and attitude toward men in /r/twoxchromosomes and other larger feminism-related subs.
[–]expendablethoughts4 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
What about whataboutism though? I often happen to stumble on r/TwoXChromosomes from r/all and never have I felt attacked or made fun of whatsoever. Hell, I'm a man and I feel worse than I've ever felt on r/TwoXChromosomes reading this very post, maybe out of sheer shame for sharing a gender with the type of subhumans in this post, but still.
[–]deaf_cheese 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Do you find yourself in conflict with the ideas and the way they are discussed on TwoX? I'd assume that you don't. Which would explain in it's entirety why you've never felt attacked.
I personally feel that calling people subhuman based upon differing opinions to be counter-productive to any sort of discussion.
I feel that it might be possible that you feel so disgusted by people who share the views of those in the comments because you've never taken the time to learn what they think and why they think it.

Yes, because saying "women on average aren't interested in tech" isn't offensive you stupid turd.
It's only offensive if you are a virtue signaling bitch. Do these pussies even know any women in real life? I doubt it. My god man I'd hate to see what their fathers are like.

[–]jack_skellington 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Graduates are publicly disclosed, right? We can simply ask to see which engineering school this was, and get a list of the "top" graduates for a given year. What do we define as "top?" Is it the top 10% or the upper half? I don't know, but I'd like to see a list of engineering schools or departments that have graduates with even just the top 10% being mostly women. That would be interesting.
I'm sure it exists. There are all-female schools, after all. But in a mixed-gender engineering school, I'm doubtful until I see it. I want to know which ones had the top 10% or so all be women (or mostly be women). Maybe I'd send my daughter to that school.
[–]willeedee 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You could probably pick any number of elite public institutions and gather general statistics. Not saying this guy's lying but most engineering schools don't even have enough women for them to be the top 10% of the top half.
[–]jack_skellington 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
most engineering schools don't even have enough women for them to be the top 10% of the top half
Again, agreed. I believe he's full of it. However, if we give him the benefit of the doubt, it could be like this:
...then it's possible. Not likely, but possible. For example, if 10% of people who enrolled overall were women, AND if all 10% were in the top 10% then it would be easy to suggest that the engineering school was dominated by top-performing women.
I don't think we're going to get anything like that. But I will extend him the courtesy of giving him a chance to prove it. Unfortunately, it has been many hours with no such citation. I get the feeling what we're eventually going to get (if anything) is "Well I knew 8 people who were awesome and 3 were women, so that counts as 'mostly women' at the top, right?"
EDIT: It has been a day and the guy has not posted any backup citations or info about his engineering school that supposedly has the top students dominated by women. So I'm done giving him the benefit of the doubt, and I join others in suggesting that he's full of shit. There is no such school.

[–]Sarkhan_Bup 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, I also didn't read the memo, because I could only find snippets of it, and it contains some valid points, but the whole anture versus Nurture conversation is not included in the memo, plus the fact that its a memo makes me think "Why is this person sending out this info in the first place?" what are they trying to accomplish? If they want to talk about this, I think it needs to be in a conversation, not a friggin memo.
[–]deaf_cheese 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not "biologically inferior" just "In terms of population averages, biologically different".
If there were two boxes of tools, one more likely to contain hammers, one more likely to contain wrenches, you wouldn't expect those tools to all perform the same task. You'd have the tools do the jobs they were designed to perform best.
Would you then assert that there was some kind of value judgement on the usability of the tool based upon the box it came in? You could, but it wouldn't be the simplest of best fitting explanation.
[–]deaf_cheese 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Most of the content of the memo was taken from some of the most fundamental studies of human personalities. If you want to push aside the idea that men and women have statistically diverse personalities, then you may as well throw out the entirety of psychology.
It's not that women shouldn't be in the job, or that they should be treated differently based upon their sex. It's simply a defence of the idea of meritocracy, stating that there are reasons other than systemic sexism for success between the sexes in differing fields.
[–]Sarkhan_Bup 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
See, this makes sense. Obviously you don't agree with me, but now I have some more info to look up and make a different judgement call. I dunno why some of the other responses are so emotionally immature.
