Seeing as almost no colleges have degrees in women's studies instead they classify as either sociology or a political science degree. I believe a few schools have a gender studies degree but they are pretty few. So I'm going to guess it's fake.
Yeah, there is nothing stopping a woman from entering the STEM field. I majored in engineering and we had female engineering students. Not many, it's still a very male dominated field. Not because a penis is a job requirement, just because women aren't signing up.
Seriously, been in the field 18 months and I already want to go back to college for a fucking art degree. This shit sucks. If I didn't have a wife and mortgage I'd bail and be working on a farm right about now.
The "male problem too" part was in reference to deciding they don't want to be in the field after being in it for awhile. I mean, I can't speak for most males, but I've burned out pretty quick. I miss picking apples.
The above was suggesting women are under-represented in engineering because it's hard, and women have the luxury of just marrying rich. My point was if that were the cause how come there are plenty of women in medicine, which also isn't easy. Maybe the reason there are less women in engineering isn't because women want the easy way out.
Exactly my point - It can be difficult getting into a field where the overwhelming majority is men. Not 'women are lazy and choose not to because that's easier'.
As it turns out, engineering isn't fucking easy. And most people (men AND women) just want to take the easy way.
The difference is, women have the luxury of just finding a partner.
Men either work or starve
That's not a very good explanation.
The vast majority of veterinary students are women, and training to be a vet is a lot longer and harder than doing sociology or media studies or some other bullshit humanity.
There was a study done that revealed the more money a girl makes the richer her husband will be on average. Meaning there is never a point that girls earn enough to be okay with not marrying up.
The discussion that people who are sincerely interested in discussing this (and have done reading on this) is generally centered around why women don't go into STEM fields, not the fact that women don't go into stem.
The problem with reddit and the internet is that a minority of well-intended feminists use bite-size stats to "start a discussion". The problem with the approach is that people are beyond "starting a discussion" so using sound bites instead of more engaging approach leads to dead-end conversations and enough dead-end conversations disengage people from the topic, instead of inviting them to talk about the actual problem, which is the root causes, not just the symptoms of gender inequality.
For example, there's a number of studies that supports that when there is a mixed-gender conversation, men tend to greatly dominate the conversation, and when women speak about the same amount as men, they are perceived to have dominated the conversation. This is an example, but the underlying issue is that men and women communicate differently, and the way women communicate often puts them at a disadvantage in a professional environment.
The fact that she has a degree in gender studies probably makes her more qualified at making her original claim than if it were made by a STEM graduate.
The point is that this woman, who had the same, equal opportunity at getting in a STEM field, destroys her own argument by being an example of why more women don't go into STEM fields, which isn't "because misogyny", it's because by and large women don't seem to take an active interest in those fields, they prefer other things, like, say, gender studies. And that's perfectly fine, everyone's entitled to make their own choices, but you don't then get to criticize a whole field of study (and it could hardly be any more all-encompassing than "STEM") as being inherently misogynist simply because women don't gravitate towards it, which in and of itself is a misconception, because women take a great deal of interest in the life sciences, which is where you see .
That's under the assumption that gender studies study this kind of thing.
No, by and large they don't, at least not in my college. They mostly take statistics out of context to point out some make-believe discrimination.
I believe in the right of anyone to study whatever they want, as long as they go in knowing full well that it doesn't entitle them to a high pay. Nobody is entitled to anything.
She chose women's studies and she's making a claim that fall right into the circle of her expertise. There is no question in my mind that she's more qualified to talk about gender inequality than me, your typical Silicon Valley techie.
Nobody ever said that, to research something, you need to be it. A biologist doesn't have to be a turtle to study turtles. A food critic doesn't have to be a chef to judge food. A statistician doesn't need to be a farmer to study trends in the price of farmland.
This is really just a red herring/ad hominem. Not sure which. What her major was has NOTHING to do with whether or not her first post is correct. But reddit will circlejerk anyway.
That sounds so wrong right away. Computers were (and are) built and marketed for business and govt. Personal use came later and the majority of computing that's done is still for industry/business or govt. The narrative that early computers were best suited for video games is kind of mind blowing to me. I get that video games are and always have been largely marketed towards boys/young men, but early computers were NOT best at playing games. Those didnt exist until the late 70s anyway
I read an article about the video game thing once, it came down to budget Nintendo had for their first couple ads. They knew they needed to have a fast start with some success so they banked on boys being gamers and succeeded, never looked back
This guy is just twisting an argument to make a lame non-point... Don't have to be a pilot to know that helicopters aren't supposed to be in trees. I would assume you don't have to be in STEM to seek out and understand the reasons behind gender representation in their field.. Especially if you've studied exactly that.. academic statistics and etc of gender representation in various work forces?
