Hey man, didn't you hear? Women and children suffer the most during war, because they lose their husbands and fathers. Hillary Clinton said that, so it must be true. Clearly that same logic applies to military wives, right?

While some might argue that Clinton was inaccurate in labeling women as the “primary victims of war” (since the majority of military members are male), a resolution adopted by the United Nation Security Council in 2000 arrived at a similar conclusion, stating that “civilians, particularly women and children, account for the vast majority of those adversely affected by armed conflict.”

[–]zetia2 73 points74 points75 points 1 year ago (9 children) | Copy Link
They don't, they just think they can. But that doesn't stop the car dealership from selling it to them with 14% APR.
[–]UnderwaterRobot 63 points64 points65 points 1 year ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Had a private get a brand new camero at 22% APR
We had to start going with them to dealerships when they got cars after that.
[–]Occulense 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Do they even make enough money to cover the payments? It’s because they don’t have to pay for their living costs (when deployed?) is that right?
[–]UnderwaterRobot 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well they get a basic pay, if they're married they get basic housing allowance, which covers rent. (Should, I should say) if you're single in the barracks, I assume you could make the payments but that's about all you're going to be able to do. when you're deployed you get your same pay+hazard pay+cost of living adjustment all tax free.
Privates don't know how to manage money because they're usually 18yo kids with no life experience.
[–]Occulense 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Brutal. And I hear they prey on privates with deals. Crazy long terms with high interest rates, which make the payments seem low.
I feel very fucking fortunate that I didn’t get pulled into this sort of thing when I was young.
[–]UnderwaterRobot 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Units have local blacklists too for dealers that get caught doing this sort of thing.
It's predatory and pretty disgusting, to be honest. But also there are good lessons to learn for them. I'm just glad I didn't have to learn it the hard way lol

[–]Tgunner192 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At the very least, I used to have soldiers want to go because ACS would give them an appointment note and they could go during duty hours.
[–]Tgunner192 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
with 14% APR.
Don't we wish it was that reasonable. I knew a private that had the blues for getting declined a car loan, the APR was 23%. I tried to console him by stressing how much this was one of the better days of his life.
Next day I got with him & his squad leader to inform him about ACS (Army Community Service) having a financial planning class.

[–]Cremacious 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
I guess it depends. Two years ago I applied for the job I have now working for a well known nationwide company. My manager had my resume printed out and asked me a few questions about it during the interview.
[–]Excuse_my_GRAMMER 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The ATS program is the first guard you have to pass , afterwards you still have to interview and they do print it out
The ATS just use scan and algorithm to weed out the one not worth contacting. Imagine a job where they get thousands of resume per day.

Yeah I get that there's a need for expertise, but keyword filtering and stuff like that is going too far IMO. That's too focused on raw profit and human machinery than meeting needs for people and solving problems. Totally focused on the wrong values in my opinion.

You’re correct. The people arguing with you either have no experience hiring people or just have no clue how their companies do it. There are some minor outliers but I guarantee they have their own similar in-house built algorithms that go and weed out applicants. It is standard practice for any company that has you fill out any part of the application process online
News flash: they toss out single page resumes as well. ;)

I’m curious what the proper way to log this would be. I could see some relevance in the terms of “this gap on my resume is due to us moving around a lot due to husbands military job but now I’m ready to get back in the work force”. Clearly not what this dependa was doing with that placement though
[–]Excuse_my_GRAMMER 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–]Codenamerondo1 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
Oh like I said, I’m not defending the picture we’re seeing, just a tangential thought I had.
And they may not be prevented from working but it’s exponentially harder to find a job (especially in any kind of career focused field) if you’re regularly moving with little personal control over the circumstances. If your resume was impacted by your spouses military service (which is certainly possible) I’d say it’s relevant information.
[–]Excuse_my_GRAMMER 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yea they would just leave the gap year if they weren’t working in base or around the bases. It not a big of a deal like people make it seem to be

Two of those positions she got because her husband was a former president.
[–]truthseeeker -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (12 children) | Copy Link
That helped but was not the reason. She got elected Senator by the people of NY, and was appointed SoS after almost beating Obama for the POTUS nomination. Moreover she certainly was not out of her element in either position, clearly knowledgeable and effective in these roles.
[–]businessJedi 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago (9 children) | Copy Link
No, she got elected senator because her last name was Clinton. Had she not been the wife of a former president with millions backing her and friends in very high places she would not have won that race. She was made Secretary by Obama because again the Clinton’s have connections and it was best interest to give her the position to bolster his support among the party. Her entire career after Bill became president has been riding his success
[–]truthseeeker -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago (8 children) | Copy Link
You're not considering the whole picture. They met in law school, where she was the smarter and more accomplished of the two, but put her dreams on hold to support his political ambitions, where she was always his #1 advisor. No doubt his accomplishments and fame laid a path for her success, but it wouldn't have worked if she weren't as smart and talented as she is. If she only had the charisma to make it all work.
[–]businessJedi 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Hillary Clinton has ZERO charisma. I do acknowledge that she is very intelligent and understood that Bill was an excellent race horse to take her to the top. But her entire career was built off his success, there is no denying having the name Clinton was what gives her recognition after his presidency. Without she would have been just another very smart female lawyer.

There is for sure name recognition that helped Bush get elected governor and president. I would disagree the name helped Kennedy. His father was a disgraced diplomat who was suspected of being close with Nazis. I would argue the name actually hurt Kennedy rather than helped.

Although this is an extremely bad way of stating that she's a military spouse, military spouses for Federal jobs need to declare it easily on resumes to receive certain jobs or else Federal HR employees will pass them up.
https://www.usajobs.gov/help/working-in-government/unique-hiring-paths/military-spouses/
Military Spouses receive special preference in some Federal positions, usually on or near Military Bases doing pretty menial tasks like Rec Center clerk, food stand, etc
Similar preferences are giving to contract/temp positions in the private sector that cater to military or government support.

Let me play the devil's advocate here. This information is actually useful for an employer, as they know that this "military spouse" might have to move without too much notice when her husband is reassigned. So, it is a reason against hiring her.
Sharing this information might look like stolen valor, further undermining her chances at getting employed, not sharing it at all would look dishonest if it leads to problem.
And when her husband is deployed, she is alone, some problems at home (and with kids) are also harder to solve, and this might be also a risk for the employer.
So if she would otherwise get a chance at job interview it shouldn't stop that yet, but in the interview it would make sense to ask her about how her status as "military spouse" affect her chance at getting the job. If her answer is entitled, then you should blacklist her, if she is honest and speaks about the hardships and potential problem and looks honest and disclosing these risks shows loyalty towards a potential employer, and she accept that these risks might lead to a bit lower pay, then giving her a chance where these risks aren't that bad could be reasonable.
maybe don't put it under military service then
[–]zimmie41 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Potential employees have no obligation to disclose information that could pose challenges in the future. Some jobs are open to or give preference to service members and their spouses, but this not the way to disclose that info. It could be from a place of.ignorance and not entitlement but there reason she needs to be upfront with personal things about her situation
[–]Enerla -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago (5 children) | Copy Link
They aren't obliged to do this, but keeping and betraying trust isn't about official obligations. If your last few employers would say "Yeah, we hired her, but after the training she left so fast that choosing her was a total loss" combined with gaps in the resume, that would be a major red flag.
If they would say: "Yeah, she warned that her hubby might be redeployed, but while she was here, we were able to depend on her, as she was willing to work at odd schedules, hiring her was a good investment even if she had to move in a few months" and you get the same warning... That is a different story.
[–]zimmie41 -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Current and future employers have no legal right to use her husband's military status against her. You have some awfully high expectations for potential employees.
[–]Enerla 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It isn't about legal rights, and the HR will probably look around on social media to learn more about her family. It is about she is free to give more information to HR than what they can legally ask for. It is her decision.
If she acts entitled, it will be visible on the Interview or even in other e-mail contact. If it is honest warning it is equally obvious. Seeing that difference is better than prejudice.
[–]zimmie41 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It really depends on the job. If spouse is her primary qualification they aren't going to research h her family history. Yes you are correct a person can divulge anything they would like but an employer is not entitled to that info. If her husband gets transferred that's how it goes and can't be used against her. If she wants to disclose it this is still not the way to go about it. Like I said it could be ignorance.
[–]Enerla 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]gtxracer -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This. I don’t like the Karen-type mil spouses but as a military brat and someone who’s served, it’s a double edged sword to claim to be a mil spouse. Without context on the resume and situation, it’s hard to know if there was entitlement. If there was, then by all means, PPD, but if not, then this is a witch-hunt for someone who has dedicated their life and marriage to serving our military. Seems more like the latter which is just shitty on OPs part and why some people think this is a woman hate group. There’s some women that truly need their PPD and others that are just trying to be a good person and found themselves in a bad light.
[–]BaseBulb 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I was also willing to give this person the benefit... like maybe it was a job specifically on base or something that would make it relevant, but I just looked at the picture again and it's literally a resume where she put a "Military service" section lol

To be devils advocate here, if you had to pack up and leave without a moment's notice, you aren't affecting anyone but the business so why should you care? You're gone and that business is now in the past and has nothing to do with you. You clearly just may have moved across the country and the company can't hurt you. most businesses don't care about employees so you're only hurting your own chances of getting a job by saying you're a military spouse.
Also if you feel you should add it, you put it in the "other" section, not saying it is military service. You can tell she asks for military discounts wherever she goes thinking shes actually somehow in the military

A shipmate that retired after 20 about 7-8 years ago had kept telling me how much worse it was getting. I thought it was pretty bad when I joined in 94. I didn't think it could get much worse than that.
[–]Samurai_1990 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My buddy got 5 write ups for simple orders all of them accusations were he was racist for having the audacity to lead. 2 have been dismissed the 3 other will likely be too but its holding up a star until its cleared up...

I'm go out on a limb here: she might have added this because her husband being in the navy it's possible that he gets relocated/moved across states and it might make her have to leave the job unexpected?
[–]dae_giovanni 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago (6 children) | Copy Link
she's listed it under "Military Service", which gives the implication that she has served.
[–]sock_templar 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I just didn't want to believe she would be that entitled.

military culture
That’s the issue. Right there.

Not the most inspired thing to put on a resume, but compared to the anti work crowd at least she's trying - I'll give her credit for that. And what should she provide as reason for not having work experience? At least this way she avoids the stupid question "how do you justify this gap in your career"? Come on, don't be mean, swinging dick or not we all hate that question.
[–]bighuddi -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago (2 children) | Copy Link
please don't bring antiwork into this. most of them have jobs and think the sub name is fucking stupid. because it is. thanks for coming to my talk!
[–]mark979kram -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Didn't mean the r/antiwork people on reddit, meant literal real world anti work people - of which there are many. I suspect the average age on reddit is 13 so I don't expect rodditors to have much work experience or ethics.
[–]bighuddi 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Found the "military spouse"
[–]dadeeyoh -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It would be easy if that were the case wouldn't it. I am not a military spouse. I am someone who was raised by a military spouse. I am also someone who was a stay-at-home dad for 14 years caring for my disabled son. But by all means talk shit on someone you don't know. Someone whose circumstances may have been completely different than what you think a military spouse entails.

if you're a military widow/widower that might mean something...
[–]lucasisawesome24 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Why is there an odd subset of women who think being a military spouse entitles them to be called by their husbands rank, thanked for THEIR service and think it means that they served in the military? Like gurl u lived in a house on base and sold Lula Roe for 3 years I don’t think that qualifies as “active duty”
