I am engaged to get married in the summer. Fiancee and I are on the same page about biblical roles. She has been faithful about submitting to my leadership thus far, so it's not all talk.

I am not a fan of neutered marriage vows when the Bible is so gender-specific about what marriage means. But of course the Bible doesn't contain an "official" set of vows. So my goal is to write vows in which we both swear to live as husband and wife according to what the Bible prescribes for those roles.

Here are the vows I have written so far. Italics are the same for man and woman to save you reading time.

Man:

My [sappy adjective] [name], I choose you to be my wife.
I swear to love you and to show you honor,
laying down my life for you as Christ did for the church.

To protect you and always be gentle with you.
To provide for you and to sanctify you by God's word,
so that I may present you to myself in splendor.

To humbly lead you as you help me
and we fulfill God's purpose together.

I pledge to be united to you in flesh, spirit, and purpose,
to give you my body and remain faithful to you,
and to be separated from you by nothing short of death."

Woman:

"My [sappy adjective] [name], I choose you to be my husband.
I swear to love you and to show you respect,
submitting to you as the church submits to Christ.

To support you with all my strength.
To bring you blessings and to live a pure and reverent life,
so that I may draw you closer to Christ by my life.

To diligently help you as you lead me
and we fulfill God's purpose together.

I pledge to be united to you in flesh, spirit, and purpose,
to give you my body and remain faithful to you,
and to be separated from you by nothing short of death."

Followed by the traditional "richer/poorer, until death do you part - I do" vows.

Here are the scriptures I am basing this on:

I swear to love you and to show you honor,
laying down my life for you as Christ did for the church.

Mostly Eph 5:25, 28 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her... He who loves his wife loves himself"

"honor" - 1 Pet 3:7 "Husbands... live... showing them honor as coheirs"

To protect you and always be gentle with you.

"protect" - 1 Pet 3:7 "Husbands... live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature..."

"gentle" - 1 Tim 3:2-3 "An overseer must be... not violent but gentle"

To provide for you and to sanctify you by God's word,
so that I may present you to myself in splendor.

"provide" - Eph 5:28-29 "husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies... [as they] provide and care for them"

"sanctify... splendor" - Eph 5:25-27 "as Christ loved the church... to make her holy, cleansing her... by the word... to present the church to Himself in splendor"

To humbly lead you as you help me

"humbly" - 1 Tim 3:2, 6 "An overseer [leader] must... not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit"

"lead" - Eph 5:23 "the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church."

"help" - Gen 2:18 "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'"

I swear to love you and to show you respect,
submitting to you as the church submits to Christ.

"love" - Titus 2:4 "train the young women to love their husbands"

"respect" - Eph 5:33 "let the wife see that she respects her husband."

"submit... Christ" - Eph 5:24 "as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands."

To support you with all my strength.

"support" - word never used of wives in the Bible, but strongly implied throughout Proverbs 31. Prov 31:23 "[due in part to her efforts, her] husband is known at the city gates, where he sits among the elders of the land"

"strength" - Prov 31:17 "She draws on her strength and reveals that her arms are strong"

To bring you blessings...

"blessings" - Prov 31:12 "She brings him good, not evil, all the days of her life."

and to live a pure and reverent life,
so that I may draw you closer to Christ by my life.

1 Pet 3:1-4 "wives... even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over... when they observe your pure, reverent lives."

I extrapolate this to imply that a godly wife can influence her husband/make it easier for him to be more godly.

To diligently help you as you lead me

"diligently" - Prov 31:15 "She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household"

"help" - Gen 2:18 "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'"

"lead" - Eph 5:23 "the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church."
