Ray Comfort aka “repent of your sins to be saved”.
[–]ENTPunisher1 point2 points3 points (19 children) | Copy Link
That's right, total false prophet and charlatan. He got into an argument with a drunk guy, telling him that he needed to turn from all of his sins and bring forth fruit in order to go to heaven, but the drunk guy kept slurring the actual gospel "Nahh bro, all you have to do is believe." You could see Ray getting progressively angrier.

Strange, you seem to be implying that repentance is not necessary for salvation?
"Repent and believe for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" - Jesus.
EDIT: Not a big fan of Ray Comfort either.

The thing people do and you just proved it is: whenever they see “repent” in the bible they automatically assume that it says “repent of your sins”.
How do you make that leap?
[–]Continuous-Metanoia0 points1 point2 points (13 children) | Copy Link
Hmm, I did no such thing and I made no such leap. In fact, you just put words in my original comment that I never actually wrote. If you go reread what I wrote you will not find the quote "repent of your sins".
Curious, what do you think the word repentance means?
[–]LizardIsLove1 point2 points3 points (12 children) | Copy Link
Repentance = to turn from
[–]Continuous-Metanoia3 points4 points5 points (11 children) | Copy Link
Close, but not quite.
A lot of people have a wrong idea of repentance because it's translated flat out wrong from Greek to English. The word "repentance" comes from the Latin-Vulgate translation, which means to "do penance": voluntary self-punishment inflicted as an outward expression for having done wrong. Unfortunately the men who translated this word from the greek, also translated their theology into the word, because that is nowhere near the original meaning in greek. That word is metanoia.
As you can tell from my reddit name, I'm a big fan of metanoia. That's because it's not just a word. Metanoia is a concept that fully embodies a believer's walk with Jesus(from start to finish). To understand this word, you need to see it in two simple parts. Meta: to change or alter. Noia: a person's paradigm or worldview. Metanoia means to change the way in which you view the world. Here is the essential command of Jesus when he says "Repent!": "You once viewed the world that way, but now I'm calling you to view the world another way". And what are we changing our worldview towards? Believing in Him and His Kingdom.
This kind of repentance is essential to salvation.

I agree with you on the last part. You seem to be very informed about this topic but the average Joe that follows guy like Ray Comfort thinks that whenever the bible says: “REPENT” it actually means “REPENT from your SINS”. In the context of salvation this means that you have to turn from sin in order to be saved. Also known as works based salvation.
Jonah 3:10 King James Version 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Thank you. I've studied this subject quite a bit.
Again, I think that misunderstanding, which you've rightly pointed out, comes from the mistranslation of repentance. An understandable mistake, since the mistranslation of metanoia has crept its way into the Church's psyche from an early age.(Oh that the Church would heed the call of the reformation: "Ad Fontes!") And like you said, the misunderstanding of a word leads people to a misunderstanding of the gospel as a whole.
If we take a look at the thief on the cross, we can see the dual aspect of repentance and belief playing out right before us.
First both thieves reviled Christ:
But then something shifted for one of the thieves. He repented. He changed the way in which he viewed his world(the righteous justice of God brought forth upon sinners) and more importantly the identity of Jesus. This change in worldview naturally leads to a belief in Christ. Repentance and belief are inseparable. Both are necessary for men and women to be saved.

Also, the text you quoted is from the old testament. That word is also mistranslated from the hebrew word: teshuvah.
Teshuvah literally means "to return". How the Hebrew word for repentance connects to New testament word for repentance involves more study on my part, but I'm sure it will be enriching and transforming.

It still also means changing your lifestyle away from ungodliness!
This is what Louw Nida says
41.52 μετανοέω; μετάνοια, ας f: to change one’s way of life as the result of a complete change of thought and attitude with regard to sin and righteousness—‘to repent, to change one’s way, repentance.’
μετανοέω: ἐξελθόντες ἐκήρυξαν ἵνα μετανοῶσιν ‘they went out and preached that the people should repent’ Mk 6:12.
μετάνοια: ἀγνοῶν ὅτι τὸ χρηστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς μετάνοιάν σε ἄγει; ‘do you fail to understand that God is kind because he wants to lead you to repent?’ Ro 2:4.
Though in English a focal component of repent is the sorrow or contrition that a person experiences because of sin, the emphasis in μετανοέω and μετάνοια seems to be more specifically the total change, both in thought and behavior, with respect to how one should both think and act. Whether the focus is upon attitude or behavior varies somewhat in different contexts. Compare, for example, Lk 3:8, He 6:1, and Ac 26:20.

Changing your lifestyle can't be a requirement for salvation as it requires a lot of work.
Ephesians 2:
[–]PaperLongjumping42240 points1 point2 points (2 children) | Copy Link
No one is saying it is a requirement for salvation! But works do Follow faith (you say to show me my faith and I will show you my works). A true salvation/faith/repentance will show forth good works (fruit)

Repentance does not mean to change one’s life as a result of having a complete change of thought. Rather, the change in life is a bi-product of genuine repentance(a complete change in thought).
This is why John tells his listeners to bear fruit in keeping with repentance. In other words, once you’ve had the experience of repentance, the change in life should be a natural outflow of that. I know it sounds like semantics, but it is a very important distinction because it really turns into a works based gospel if we start to mess with these biblical definitions.

I believe that but the actual first step in repentance is Godly sorrow. To receive the free gift of salvation you need to accept that you need it, and the more your eyes are opened from salvation the more you see the desperate state you were in.

Biblical repentance means changing your mind. In the context of salvation, it's changing your mind from unbelief to belief in the Gospel.
"And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."
Nowhere in the Bible does it say you have to confess/repent of your sins for salvation. That's works salvation. All you have to do is acknowledge the fact that you're a sinner who is relying on Christ's work alone for salvation.

So what are you claiming about sin? Should I not repent of it? Christian on Christian negative speak is so confusing. I believe in Christ and I’ve acknowledged that my sin is evil and I’ve turned and am continuing to turn, from it. Is that not cool? Repentance came about due to my faith and my beliefs so it followed belief. Is that not how it works?
[–]ENTPunisher1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Repent of it, but don't believe it's required for salvation.

This is a terrible tool. Just a tract for the 21st century.
