First off, I love Stacy. But this article is a little weird to me. She just seems to be pontificating on age and fashion, and doesn't reach a direct conclusion. But maybe that's the point? Either way, I refuse to prescribe to the idea that just because your older you can't be feminine.

And I cite THIS article, written by a MAN, to prove my point!!!

I've read the article twice now and I still don't really get what she is trying to say, I'm not even sure that she does.

If I'm interpreting it correctly her premise seems to be that older women are expected to dress a certain way and are penalised socially if they don't and that this is bad.

I'm not really convinced that's entirely true, although I think it was true many years ago. In the not so distant past there was a very marked difference between the way single women in their 20s and married women in their 40s dressed for example.

These days however I think fashion is more adaptable. There are brands that cater to older women but they tend to adapt what is in trend so the clothes don't look that radically different from what you find in younger persons shops. So I think you can dress in a modern androgynous style as an older person very easily if you want to.

Also in the article she seems to come across as somewhat anti-dress, but I don't think her premise is sound. A pink cotton tiered halter dress sounds awful and I can understand why she doesn't think it looks good on her. You can still wear dresses what ever your age and many women manage to pull this off without looking age inappropriate or silly.

I feel that she is sort of coming at the issue the wrong way around. I don't think it's that people look at a more mature women in something wacky and say 'what the F is she thinking wearing that, she's OLD how bloody dare she'.

I think it's more a case that dressing in a way that is highly provocative, either because it's very revealing or because it's just plain odd seems a bit sad somehow. It looks like attention seeking and attention seeking when you are over 25 just looks a bit pathetic and it makes a person seem insecure and that they don't have any self worth.

Younger people can get away with this to some extent because we expect them to experiment, we expect them to be a little bit naive and we expect them to be a little bit insecure and attention seeking. That doesn't mean we don't laugh at the fashions younger people wear, or that we think they look amazing or stylish.

The photograph where she is in an office in those odd jeans with the bared midriff just screamed insecurity and attention seeking to me and I actually find it a bit cringy. I wouldn't feel any differently if she was 20 years younger, there is something about the whole ensemble with the pose that says 'I don't really believe I have value and I need you to validate me'.

I'd also question her statement that age 32 is the age when all things are possible.

Personally I think 21 is probably the age when all things are possible. At that age I think you can take virtually any path towards where you want to go.

After that you start making choices and while these choices do open up new doors, inevitably they also close certain doors. You make a career choice or an education choice or a choice about a relationship and that gives you new options but it also cuts you off from other choices further down the road. You can't have your cake and eat it.

For example if you want a large family 32 is not really the age to start, particularly if you are a single women at 32. You might manage it, but it's going to be much more of a struggle and with much fewer choices then if you made that choice at 21.

I'm a fan of "wear whatever you want to wear but understand what everyone is thinking". A lot of the things I feel like are 'youthful' are designed to enhance features commonly associated with fertility. So push up bras, midriff exposure, higher heels to accentuate butts, etc. Those kinds of things. So seeing someone who is post wall put it all up on display just seems like a grab at what is already lost.... youth. Now that doesn't mean that you cannot incorporate some youthful design in a tasteful manner. I saw this one lady today for example wearing a leather skirt with a pair of chunky heels that had a metallic heel detail on them. Both combined were just an overpowering message of youth but had she just worn the shoes with something more demure or the skirt with more conservative shoes, she would have been dressed very stunningly. I think that there is something as too much youth in an outfit but you can often incorporate some youthful accents in a tasteful manner. Just don't overdo it. Again, it is just my opinion and honestly, overal, most women don't know how to dress appropriately, or for their body type, or for specific occasions, or actually just don't care enough, or, finally, just want to look a certain way.
