Further convinced that being a good woman to your man is unstated social clout for them.

Talked with a friend in crisis mode preparing for her husband’s interview for a position, and it made me realize even more that men really do benefit from extra respect when their wives are quality wives. If he invites you to a work event, he probably respects you and knows you improve his life in the eyes of others. It’s not that impressing people is the goal. It just shows the value and worth of how a good woman really does help her man to gain respect among his peers. He couldn’t do these special jobs without you, ladies. It’s not about climbing any ladder, but becoming a person of respect. Women display either positively or negatively what their men are capable of. We have our own skills and work, but you can’t escape from the reality that we do have influence on how people view our men.

I also thought that it is perhaps more important as the years go on that once you’ve got the clothes and grooming down pat, the social value of being inwardly kind, able to truly listen, and be able to help others is what sets you apart from the rest.

All these realizations made me proud to be chosen by my man, proud to help him in the ways I excel, and proud to launder the clothes he wears or just keep his life in order. There’s a man that the world sees, but every man was once a boy. I’m reminded of that when I feel negatively. I have the ability to help this man grow and progress and to show others his real and honest value. I forget this at times.

This is an important point to gaining commitment. A woman sort of represents the more personal side of her mate. If they are argumentative, dress bad, look dumpy, etc. it is not a confidence builder for sure after those work events. From what I see, guys do selectively leave certain wives out of work events. I'm not gonna get into the patterns, but it is obvious who stays home and why.

Yes. That reminds me too of why inviting people over for dinner was a wife’s domain and way for helping her husband in the community. Once a woman can manage her and her family outside the home, then her skills in managing inside the home gain respect too.
Thanks for sharing.

There's an old saying that is very relevant here: "Privates shouldn't marry, Sergeants should marry, and Officers must marry."

I don't get it - can you ELI5?

[–]Holzmann 20 points21 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Privates are freshly enlisted soldiers. They shouldn’t marry because they’re young, impetuous, and wild.

Sergeants are grizzled enlisted veterans who should marry so that they have a strong feminine influence to balance out their abrasive, tough-as-nails nature.

Officers have a lot of responsibility to shoulder and their careers become increasingly political the higher up the ladder they go. They need a strong and shrewd woman in their corner to help bear the weight of this responsibility and to navigate political waters.

Thank you! That is deep and interesting

Also, on the point about Sargeants:

In most militaries and most branches, Sargeant (specifically Master Sargeant) is the highest rank among non-commissioned officers. Beyond the rank of Sargeant lie the commissioned officer ranks, beginning with Lieutenant.

So

Sergeants should marry

is like career advice to the Sargeant. "If you want to advance and become a career commissioned officer, you're going to need support. So get a wife."

By the time you're already a commissioned officer, you better have a wife supporting you. That's why

Officers must marry

Love that quote. Thank you.

I wish more women knew how much of a social boost their men get when their friends/family/coworkers/clients see them with a good woman treating him respectfully. It's one of the ultimate status symbols and earns us tremendous respect from all of the other men in our life: boss, coworkers, family, friends etc..... This is especially true in today's western culture where wives/gfs all make stupid jabs and jokes about their men and the guys have to just sit there and laugh it off while dying inside.

Side note; if you treat your man respectfully in public he will love and cherish you forever.

I’m grateful you shared this. Motivating for me as well as others. So sorry for all those cringeworthy moments.

Glad I could help, your man is a lucky guy. Keep up the good work, if he's the right guy he will value the hell out of you for this kind of stuff.

No, not necessarily! A Woman should always be taking a hard look at his behaviour !

This is lovely. Thank you for placing it.

I think most of us probably get the clothes and grooming by the time we finish HS, but it's really the rest of us that has to grow to be of value, especially in today's world where there is so much that's trying to deter us from being good people. We have to keep working not only against these forces but also in-tune with our own growth to be the kindest and most giving we can each be and to listen to others so that we may even better hear our own selves.

Thank you for saying that. :) I find it a challenge to maintain the right balance each day. It is slowly getting better for me, but I just wanted to encourage you! :)

Oh thank you so much. Yah that's really valid. I do feel like I'm flauntable and enjoy being someone he can show off.

Not to be pedantic about this, but using marriage as a vehicle to drive up your social standing has long since been a known decision.

You even see this in the old testament.

Proverbs 31: 20, 23

"She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy."

and

"Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land."

This is literally talking about a woman bolstering her husbands name through her good works, kindness, gentleness and femininity.

[–]oliveshoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. I have been mulling upon this woman in Proverbs and the solid wisdom in each of her attributes. The mother to King Lemuel was advising her son on searching for an excellent wife. Makes sense that she says a good wife is very rare. The older I get, the more far-reaching and applicable to modern life these verses are to me. Pretty neat that the discussion was as highly sought after thousands of years ago as it is now. Thank you for mentioning this.

Men need us to make them shine, all polished surfaces need the light!

Yes, I love this! Thank you for sharing it.

My boyfriend works for his family business, and it comes with certain responsibilities to uphold a certain standard for the family.

The fact that he wants me by his side for those events means a lot to me, and of course I do everything I can to make sure he knows that a) I have his back and will support him and b) that he can trust me in those scenarios to reflect well on him.

Too often we think of ourselves as individuals (which we are) but as part of a couple, we are also a part of a unit, and each reflects on the other, for good or bad.

Being the kind of woman that he can count on is a very important quality in a partnership.

[–]oliveshoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m so glad for you! That’s great! 🙂I think I get into these independent frames of mind and forget that the choices I make reflect on the husband I love. Good luck with all you guys do. 💛

[–]Luscious-Grass 1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes. And this is why in 2021, men DO care about a woman's career. Men gain clout from having a good-looking, feminine, and yes professionally successful (but not too successful) wife. It's not for the resource provisioning, it's for the status.

Similarly, the body size preferred by men is ALSO variable and based on what is currently considered high status.

Humans are pretty interesting.

[–]oliveshoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, they are! :)

[–]lasuba 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

I dont think the body type preferred by men is a variable, men have lots of different types they like but its moslty a guy that will like a one type of body until he dies.

[–]Luscious-Grass 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

In one individual man I agree with you. But trends across generations vary, probably influenced by media as any given generation is growing up. Whatever is high status and featured in media when men are growing up is shown to influence their preferences. Of course different groups see/value different media and popular culture trends, so it is not uniform.

[–]ZombiFelineTuba 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

So they should stop then because clout is bad

[–]BurnDownTheMission68 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

A thin and pretty wife is something any man would be proud of.

This is a pretty dreary outlook on life. How old are you that you've seen this so much? Do you plan to marry?

[–]Gaiamanuscript -1 points0 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I haven’t seen much but I’ve seen poor souls being screwed over by men. Like replacing the wife for the mistress I spoke to a woman who had to live in the caravan and when he went bankrupt the mistress left him behind. Just look at Beyoncé a beautiful successful woman and she got screwed over.

Marriage seems wonderful but being screwed over isn’t. I’ve been told that no man stays married with you for over 10 years without a single slip up.

[–]girlwithasidecarEndorsed Contributor 7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

If you haven't seen much, how can you make such a definitive claim?

You can't count celebrities because they live in a different world (and Beyonce doesn't seem like a rpw role model). In my family, there have been long marriages and divorces followed by a long second marriage. If my husband has cheated on me then I am blissfully ignorant. And if my husband cheated, he stands to lose more than I do.

Your perspective is unhealthy. I'm sorry you are surrounded by poor role models.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
