Never, ever, break or give in. ALWAYS be the bigger person. Kill her with kindness, and smile sweetly when she glares at you. It will probably make her hate you more at first, and it will show, but this will get her to make a fool of herself in the process.

Do you feel you have to win her over? If so, why? In every environment we might come across people who we will not get along with well. It's ok. If she isn't your friend, politely ignore her. Be nice and neutral like any other stranger. She might need time to warm up.

No reason to do or say something. No need for grand gestures or drama. If you say anything your common friend will not like it, and she will avoid you.

I wanted to add something.

In kindergarten teacher would drill it on us to get along, and be friends with all kids etc.

It's impossible.

Nowadays kindergarten teachers teach children it's ok to not want to be friends, but it's important to tolerate other people and always be polite.

So follow this as a guideline. Tolerance and manners and you will be fine.

Also, consider that you might be inferring all of this. She might have "resting b1tch face". Toward this end, when I was younger, I would get a lot of "Y'know, before I met you, I thought you were a real ahole, but now that I've gotten to know you, you're actually really cool." You never know. /shrugs

Full text: Every so often I will meet another woman that I don't mesh with very well. For example, at my university, there is a girl in my classes. She is polite when she speaks to me but sometimes I notice her looking at me almost glaring. I am friendly with her best friend so sometimes I have to be around her. I really get a sense that she dislikes me and sometimes I am uncomfortable around her.

I honestly just want to get on. I am polite to her. How can I go forward, just continue to be polite if I am around her? Otherwise I would really just like to avoid her.

Any advice would be appreciated

Personally I’d ask the friend about it. Typically I tend to ignore things like this, but I’d probably be like “hey xyz, what is up with Karen, I noticed she’s staring at me a lot and looks mad. You know her well, What’s her deal?”

Try not to be accusatory or mean, you’re just asking a question.
