The more traditional custom would be for the gentleman to pay, whereas now the spiel tends to be a woman offering to pay half and the man refusing, or turn taking, or just splitting the bill.

I've encountered feminist discussions about how it is oppressive to be paid for because it insinuates that the woman can not look after herself, or is something to be bought by the man.

How do you feel about the issue, and what factors into it? Does it make a difference if one partner is not earning because they are in school, or if one earns more? Is it a different issue at different points in a relationship?
