Vintage items, thrift store hauls, hand-me-downs, and heirlooms

When I was young (about 7), my grandmother taught me to knit. She gave me one of her tortoise shell knitting needle set and I thought they were wonderful. My mother worked shifts so did my father so I was at my grandmothers a lot. This is what we would do each night, after dinner we would sit down, watch wheel of fortune and knit. Knitting, Its not something I did very much of until my children came along. But once I started my hands remembered the movements, its a amazing feeling after so long (Thank you Muscle memory). But now I always have some project on the go these days. Its sounds so silly and sentimental but when I use those knitting needles - and i'll use every chance I get too, even if those needles are just a little to small for that project. It feels like she is right there next to me, silently knitting away. Almost all my grandmothers belongings were donated when she passed, so i'm very happy to have these as a small reminder or a wonderful skill she taught me.

Maybe I'm simple. I don't have a big pyrex collection, but I do use my slow cooker about every week/2x times a week. My husband bought me a new set of kitchen knives last week which I realized is so helpful cooking and trimming meat. I really like my carpet cleaner and sewing machine. Overall, I love love love my Roomba. I set it and forget it and it vacuums the whole house while I'm out!

I live in a family of gypsy origin and my family are crazy about finding stuff in thrift stores, or in skips, or dumpsters. I have no idea how they find this stuff but it's always worth hundreds of pounds.

Some of my fave gifts from them; - every issue of 'the face' magazine - soft feather Pom poms on a stick that women used to use as a powder brush before plastic was invented. - maybel lucie atwell hand painted teapot - the first plastic cutlery set released in the UK - a Mercury barometer - world war 2 utility shoes - silk embroidered pillow case from 1920

I love my old junk! I wish I had their nack. Luckily my husband is exactly the same and I think he makes more money than I do in my day job by selling on stuff he bought in thrift stores.

My parents went to an auction a couple of weeks ago. I remember you writing about finding old cast iron at these types of things and I asked them to keep an eye out. There was tons of it and they got me two new/old cast iron pans from around the 1930s. I can't wait to try them.

Random piece of info.. diamonds only become clearer with time. Although this won't happen in your lifetime, it might for your children or grandchildren.

I have a lot of my grandmother's stuff - her Kenwood, kitchenware, card making equipment, hell even her iPad! My favourite is her maslin pan though, as it reminds me of all the hours we used to spend making jam together.

I've made thrift store hauling into a career. :) Until about 2 years ago, I never really went into thrift/secondhand stores. Now I love them! I find about 90% of things for my business, and 10% for me. I've been so impressed with all the vintage things that I'm switching the focus of my business from modern stuff to vintage stuff.

I just love having things that are really unique. So far my two favorites I've found are this little framed print with fairies around a pond, and a figurine of a kneeling woman in a dress with a pot. She looks so peaceful and happy. I found a really expensive Simplicity vacuum for $15. It works great, but J has decided that he doesn't like canister vacuums - so I put it on craigslist (he likes to do the vacuuming).

I've been wanting to try cast iron cooking again. I'm afraid I'll mess up my glass-top stove with the heavy pans, though!

My cherished kitchen items are a Foley mill my grandmother got for her bridal shower and passed on to me and her old Betty crocker cook book. The cook book is from the 60s and binder style, so when I got it, it was full of all sorts of notes and recipes she had put in by hand.
