*I decided to make a post based on a comment I made in the Simple Questions thread here: *

This little phrase has always bothered me. I've seen it all over facebook - nearly every wedding announcement or anniversary date and in normal conversation too. "I'm so happy to be marrying my best friend!"

It's always felt wrong and very unappealing to me. It feels especially wrong in the context of a RP relationship. I want to be a wife, not a bestie.

For a BFF+B I would not:

  • Defer/submit, especially not major life decisions
  • Allow them to lead the relationship and family
  • Take an oath to love, honor, respect them
  • Be bound to them by law/religion/spirituality
  • Raise children/create a family
  • Have a consuming passion for them, and want to give everything of myself for them to have
  • Continually strive to improve myself in all ways, including changing my appearance just to make them happy
  • Be first mate to their captain

Saying "I'm marrying my best friend" seems to downgrade the SO to a level where you're just hanging out together and having sex when it's convenient. It falls flat.

What do you think?
