This is my take on it. Rather than a LTR it sounds like you treated her like a plate you kept for too long out of comfort.

In an actual LTR you are captain of the ship and she's your crew. A good captain rewards his crew and punishes bad behavior accordingly but in the end both entities add value to eachother's life.
