There's a difference between protecting a woman (which is naturally ingrained in every man's instinct) to whiteknighting (just being a general betafag who excuses shitty behaviour and mediocrity). The bouncer probably kept it short and sweet rather than spewing moral bullshit like, "you should respect women and check your privileges".

I also did have a friend at uni who was the vocal male feminist/SJW type who happened to get laid like crazy. Though that's because he was on the football team (automatic status) and he was still the type to fuck and chuck rather than pedestalling them like a "m'lady" type of fag.

For fucks sake. Yes it was appropriate. It's the bouncers job to keep unruly patrons under control. Yes to effectively communicate with drunk dudes you will need to grab their arm to ensure you've got their full fucking attention and affirm the seriousness of what you are saying. Its not like guillotined him.

Even when the bouncer is captain save-a-ho those harpies just find something to nitpick him for. Hint: An effective bouncer does not tap someone on the shoulder "Excuse me sir. I believe I may have witnessed a breach of personal space on your part. I would like to request on behalf of the other patrons that you maintain a safe personal bubble at all times. All right well have a good night". That shit doesn't work on drunk people.
