Teen 'Social Media Star' Quits, Discusses 'Ugly Truth' Behind Fame...

November 3, 2015

From: http://time.com/4096988/teen-instagram-star-essena-oneill-quitting-social-media/

This girl said some very red-pill truths that is nearly word-for-word what those of us have been saying at TRP for years. Take a look at these gems:

“Social media, especially how I used it, isn’t real [...] It’s a system based on social approval, likes, validation in views, success in followers. It’s perfectly orchestrated self absorbed judgement."

She nailed it! My million-dollar question is what made her see it suddenly today but for years she was blind? Seems pretty obvious that something must have triggered her to see through the delusion and discover the true nature of social media.

Here at TRP, we probably use very little social media, comparatively, but we've all spun plates who are on their phone non-stop seeking validation when we put our foot down on something or hold our ground and maintain frame. I've always noticed that girls use social media to get their feelings boosted when I hold frame and don't cave to their stompiness and brattiness. Are the majority of women's self esteem becoming more fragile in this day and age of social media addiction? What does that mean for men who date these women?

I don't know the answers but I find it possibly the first evidence that women might just be starting to realize for themselves what guys have observed about them for many years (that their facebook or social media addiction is just a drug which they take hits when they need validation or approval) but I'm not holding my breath...

I met this girl at a vegan meetup with my ex girlfriend. She is really down to earth, or so it seems but let me tell you this is all just a little stunt she's pulling to feel different than the rest of the girls she's competing with.

[–]bowie74748 points49 points  (9 children) | Copy Link

First thing I thought was "fuck..clever little bitch she is going to triple her followers overnight"

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan19 points20 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it's straight out of the 48 laws: "create compelling spectacles" and "court attention at all costs."

Both basically meaning "stand out from the rest."

I find it funny most will take what she's said at face value and not even be aware enough of the game.

[–]bowie7475 points6 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

100 000x reposts, 0x critical thought.

Edit: now there's a wave of naysayers. Well done folks

[–]1Soarinc[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Hey I'm OP just to be clear, you're saying that we shouldn't take this girl's statements at face value, correct? (i'm 95% sure that's what you're saying -- just too tired and sleepy to "read between the lines" of what you're saying)

(from dealing with strep throat and I took an ambien an hour ago)

[–]bowie7471 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well I'm just saying it's possible that she's looking at the bigger picture. If she's actually speaking her heart then fine, most of us here 100% agree with her. But something smells fishy

[–]IronMeltsinmyHands4 points5 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

That... Was not my first thought. When will I learn?!

[–]2comment2 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Keep adding enough cynicism to your thinking process until where, if you were to blurt the first thought that comes to you out loud or online someplace, some random beta or girl would call you can an asshole.

Then you'd have it.

[–]Redpillwhiterabbit2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

IVE MADE IT!!! what'd I win?

[–]Smoochdota4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Nice to see a fellow high carber around these parts.

[–]moose_war11 points12 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup, looking for more views and subscribers. On the sidebar I can already see tons of video responses from various youtubers. Articles in gawker, Dr. Phil, some morning shows. Whoever her manager is, he's a genius.

[–]Momo_dollar2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah having read the article, she isn't entirely leaving, she will still be online in some form, and is basically just rebranding.

[–]NeoBushi1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This . Validation is a woman's currency. You wouldn't let a woman tell you there that she doesn't AFBB.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

She'll crash and burn and there'll be another hot little girl to come floating up out of the dirty masses.

The world will still rotate and the sun will still burn. Yawn.

[–]obama_lurves_nsa2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha boom nailed it.

It's just mathematics after all

[–]prodigy2throw71 points72 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

The real red pill truth: validation is porn for women. The deeper you go the more depraved you get.

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan17 points18 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Porn and social media attention both give shots of dopamine, so that makes perfect sense. Both are addictive behaviours.

[–][deleted] 9 points9 points | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Masonjarteadrinker27 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow that makes a lot of sense, never though about it that way.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Like those Instagram models that fly out to Dubai so men can shit on their faces.

[–]eternal_temptation14 points15 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

whenever there is a quoted "Ugly Truth", I know it's a PR marketing crap.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Seriously, they might as well have added 'find out what her top 10 reasons were for quitting social media.'

[–]Kalidane13 points14 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

You'll be blown away by number 7

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Instagram competition HATES HER!

{view slideshow}

[–]moose_war23 points24 points  (8 children) | Copy Link

LOL yeah right. She didn't delete any of her accounts. She's received tons of revenue and attention posting billions of pics of herself but now she is totally done with it (wink). She is too young and is too hot to stop and we all know it.

But she looks like she will be re-branding herself the same way PUA guys did a few years ago. This is just a new angle. Isn't this one of the 48 Laws of Power? She's creating absence so she can make her triumphant return. She's getting lots of coverage. I'm sure Dr. Phil will be pleased to have her on now.

[–]Teatach15 points16 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm looking forward to seeing her on TED. Talking about her business on how they are teaching girls to live more healthy lives and stop worrying about Betas telling them how pretty they are everyday.

[–]moose_war4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh god definitely. Forgot about TED. "We looked at the data and what we found surprised us- young girls actually ARE healthy at every weight" or something.

That's the new dynamic by the way. This chick is skinny and pretty and yet is preaching as if she is one of her fat fans that look up to her. It's like Beyonce's "I woke up like dis" shit. No bitch, BEYONCE woke up on a pile of money. You're just a chubby chick from Indiana.

[–]prodigy2throw1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Then women will continue to say that they don't get taken seriously. While a physicist or statistician gets his TED spot bumped for her.

[–]throwawaycomedian954 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Court attention at all costs too.

[–]1Soarinc[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Ahhhh, now that I took a second look with more skepticism, you are absolutely correct! But holy fuck are women skillful at being deceitful! I thought her crocodile tears were heartfelt and sincere, shame on me I should have known better!

[–]swedsson0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

There's no way this is some orchestrated scheme to gain more attention and wealth, by a 16 year old. Women may be that deceitful but a girl at 16, really? No I think it's way more probable that she's sincere. Plus, I find it hard to believe that a girl that young and good looking is smart enough to think through, well pretty much anything

[–]redpillstate3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That is a dangerous course of thought, IMO. I've seen plenty of people use that type of logic to excuse other people of things. In this case, we KNOW she had outside help in her social media success. This isn't a random girl taking selfies in the bedroom. Before she "quit" she had plenty of adults involved in her social media shit. I don't believe for a second that they weren't involved in this PR wet dream.

[–]TRPrinny2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It looks like she deleted her Instagram account, but it is easy to be skeptical.

[–]radianceofparadise10 points11 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I might believe it if she actually shut the social media down, but yep. This is a ploy. Clever though. I agree with the comments here. Her manager flipped the script. Beautiful marketing. Most importantly, AWALT.

[–]NeoBushi45 points46 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

She is having a meltdown because there are still girls with millions of likes and she can't keep up. So she is pursuing a strategy of trying to sabotage the success of others. Its the same as post-wall women shaming the young slutty girls.

[–]_eskimo_brothers_20 points21 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

"That's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for her."

No, but really all of our thoughts are right, this is a shift in branding, nothing more.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I also doubt she had a sudden moment of clarity, shes throwing her toys because the attention whoring is not yielding the desired results anymore or that the objects of her affection are now eyeing younger and prettier stock.

[–]moose_war7 points8 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Well to be fair, she is 18 and smoking hot and internet famous so she's pretty high up there for validation. I'm surprised she's having this "melt down" so early. Bold move by her manager.

[–]1Claude_Reborn25 points26 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

She's Aussie, she'll look like a hag by 26.

The sun down here destroys your skin, as does the hard partying most Aussie girls do.

[–]paperlion6017 points18 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I called bullshit after watching a few seconds of the video. She got scared one night realizing she's competing thousands of other girls. What she's saying about "the fakery" is definitely true, but her intentions are not what she claims them to be. Queen bee...

[–]its-iceman11 points12 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

I read a bunch of them. This is clearly two-fold.

  1. She's got cash in the bank and has surrounded herself with a crazy vegan circle of do-gooders.

  2. This is a calculated PR move to "expose" her false reality, which she'll spin into a book deal, TV exposure, etc. This will only equal more money for her.

[–]throwaway320_4 points5 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think we need to expect a book from someone who has issues writing coherent 140 character tweets.

[–]1Paid_Internet_Troll7 points8 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

People who know how to write well will write books for you, to be released under your own name, if you give them enough money.

[–]its-iceman3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

And this is sleezy Z-list celeb PR firm 101.

[–]CMaximus5 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It just seems at the end of the day she's saying 'I made money on Instagram, and had to work relatively hard for it, and it sucked and no woman should have to do that...' boo-fuckin-hoo.

[–]skoobled3 points4 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

She's a genius: now she has the "hot chick on insta" dollar, plus the "social media is awful OMG expectations on women are terrible OMG you are SOOO strong" dollar

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan10 points11 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Not like we don't have a few dudes online on the "OMG feminists are horrible, look at this sick shit they said here #gamergate" dollar. Some of the anti-feminist youtubers have built their entire careers on that and make some tidy bank.

Most people smart/aware enough to understand Machiavellianism, 48 laws, advertising and how they all link in are on this kind of game. They either completely hijack a community for their own profit, or they care about the community but still do this dumb tabloid shit to drive their own profile/profit anyway.

It reminds me of these lyrics from Jay-Z:

I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars

They criticized me for it, yet they all yell "holla"

The ones getting the most attention and have the biggest followings IN ANY niche are doing one of the following:

  • constantly mocking others [superiority, comedy, outrage]
  • doing really stupid outlandish stuff [pranks, comedy, shock, outrage]
  • being really sexual/revealing/slutty [arousal, desire]

Then there's the veneer/engine for why you do all these things: adopting a social cause so what you do seems noble when it is overwhelmingly about profit, also serves to target a specific groups wealth and favour. Most internet personalities are fucking charlatans, they pretend to give more shits than they do, sometimes they give no shits at all and they're just gaming everyone.

Basically it's all about shock value, standing out, and creating a cult of personality. This is the world of business and how it monetises personalities. "Just creating good content" only attracts people who can appreciate good content, you would be surprised how small a % of the population that number is.

The people worth the most fucks innately and not in $$$ (provide the most value and whose business model does not rely on manufacturing drama constantly) never have the biggest followings for exactly this reason, because they don't "play the game", they can't compete with jokers posing as critics, comics or social activists whose every minor move is calculated to cause butthurt and command attention.

Assume anyone doing anything for any social cause is a complete fucking fraud. Especially if they weren't in a movement or community from the start, had their own thing going, and then switched to something like anti-islamism later. That's nothing but a change of branding.

A dude with say a fitness blog who starts saying lots of anti-islamic shit on social media, pissing off as many muslims as he can by mocking their religion and winding them up is just self-promoting, anti-islamism is just a convenient vehicle for him to do that and as a bonus the original anti-islamism community will look up to him as brave and powerful ally due to seemingly aligned ideological interests and thus start following him.

Now replace "fitness blog" with "self improvement blog" and "anti-islamism" with "anti-feminism" - does it make you think of anybody? If it does, I'd think twice about trusting or following that guy, lest you get caught up in his orbit of PR bullshit. If it doesn't, good for you, you're either too stupid to realise you're in somebody's orbit of never-ending drama, or you don't subject yourself to nonsense.

People reward outrage and shock more than things which are interesting outside how they feel about it, sad as that is.

Dumb outrage/drama and sex appeal sell better than providing raw value, most people rather masturbate to porn and outrage porn than bother to read something with more substance. People who dislike and avoid that kinda content are a small market, even in TRP (look at some of the absolute bullshit people upvote here, and look at some of the great stuff that gets almost totally ignored).

This girl is just playing the game, many people are playing the game and if you place a premium on your attention and time you will want to avoid people on this game. Any "evolution or big change in direction", especially on social media, is more than likely nothing other than a brand shift looking to consolidate a new market into a pre-established following in order to increase the cult of personality.

Of course I could just be a far too cynical Machiavellian bastard that is completely wrong and needs to shut up, there's always that.

[–]1jimjackjoe2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Even if you're completely wrong, don't shut up, since I enjoyed seeing your thought process.

It's clear you're mainly jotting down ideas for yourself. I sometimes write massive responses to comments on here, and eventually I realize I'm writing not to respond to the comment, but to work on laying down some idea for myself. Once I capture the idea concretely, I usually delete the post rather than post it because I consider the mission accomplished.

Your post has made me realize it makes no sense for me to delete my posts since I would have preferred for you to not delete your post. Probably my not-posting is driven by a fear that what I'm posting has errors in it and will receive a negative response. Which is extra-ordinarily pussy-assed on my part. Ok, sweet, good realization I just made.

Anyway, I've got some childhood friends who I communicate with primarily through email. Utterly massive email chains that have been going on for years in which we write huge blocks of free-flowing text, mainly consisting of observations and theories on life. There's been some poetry phases too, I'll confess.

We have this agreement though--the emails are primarily sent to spark ideas in the other person. It's ok to not respond at all to the main content of an email. One of my friends can send me some massive theory, and I can respond to an individual sentence that doesn't have anything to do with the overall theory.

This is a good type of exchange to have going with other males. It's important for men to write out their ideas. Writing to others will encourage men to write down their ideas--since they have an audience. But often writing for the audience is only a catalyst that gets you to write down the idea in the first place.

Men earn 5% of women on Instagram. We need an equality campaign. Oh wait, I've never voluntarily been to Instagram in my life...

[–]Dustin_Bromain8 points9 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Those selfie girls from the baseball video got invited to the Ellen show. They're getting rewarded for their solpsistic behavior. How humorous.

[–]TheBloodEagleX3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Damn. Those sorority girls ended up on Ellen. It just helps perpetuate and validate it all.

[–]_eskimo_brothers_6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

The selfie girls show what is exactly wrong with girls of that age and older. I never knew they received more press for that, not going to lie, I find that a sign for our times.

[–]Momo_dollar2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe she had her vacatation to the ME , got her £50k to get pissed/shitted on , gang banged etc for a few nights and either is broken or is smart and quitting while she is ahead.

[–]mike_m_ekim2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Wut? TRP? She strikes me more like a feminist.

[–]zpatriarchy6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

how the hell is this girl "famous"? she's so plain. i guess she's only "instagram famous."

i'm more concerned that so many of you know who she is.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Am I the only one that does not think she is "smoking hot." Thigh gap, no hips, small tits. Not my cup of tea.

[–]zpatriarchy2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Thigh gap, no hips, small tits.

right! too skinny, no thanks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Its not the "skinny" per se. Its the lack of proportions and curves.

[–]Teatach4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This has been all over mainstream media today. She does nail it, and I do think this behavior does go beyond social media. It's all the same game "look at me look at me".

Was she just tired of her beta followers, or as many other point out here,, what's her next business idea?

TRP's might not all be real Chad's, but are women real at all?

[–]Endorsed ContributorRunawayGrain5 points6 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

See when I was in high school we didn't have the internet. Girls were still validation whores, but they were pretty much restricted to a small geographical area. This girl is pretty hot, but chances are I could walk a few towns over and find a girl just as hot, but without the baggage from the validation cyclone that this girl has whipped up around herself.

Seems pretty obvious that something must have triggered her to see through the delusion and discover the true nature of social media.

I don't know the answers but I find it possibly the first evidence that women might just be starting to realize for themselves what guys have observed about them for many years (that their facebook or social media addiction is just a drug which they take hits when they need validation or approval) but I'm not holding my breath...

Social media whores are like heroin addicts as best I can tell. Ask a heroin addict if heroin is bad for them. They will generally say yes, and they hate it. The they will go find another hit. They spend tons of time maintaining the habit in the same way this girl was talking about spending a lot of times taking hundreds of shots to get just the right picture. Heroin addicts will try to hide their habit, and will do whatever it takes to get the next hit, which is what she is doing now. She's attracting attention, while claiming to hate her drug. It's working, as before she may have had a million followers, now she's in Time so she's upped her dosage. Finally, a heroin addict is always a heroin addict, even when they aren't using. Most heroin users have the craving for life, and carry that with them. They can't do weed or go get drunk as it doesn't do it for them. They always come back for a fix. These chicks are the same, and are throughout their lives will seek out large amounts of attention.

Edit: Missed a quote.

[–]B_Campbell1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Let's not take this too seriously people. As other posters are saying this is just product differentiation. One of her "realization" posts is replaying her old post in a little outfit demonstrating how she used to have to look real hot but now she's all past that. She's just broadening her audience.

[–]haxurmind1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

There's no way this is some orchestrated scheme to gain more attention and wealth, by a 16 year old.

18 according to the time article, 19 according to another article by ABC Australia.

Rant/Nothing new here folks

Regardless of her age; the whole idea of taking numerous pictures before choosing the best one to post is not a new discovery.

A quick perusal of the net with Google threw out some interesting articles about major changes in diet some women put themselves through in order to make themselves look better for photos.

Example site: http://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/blog/building-a-surreal-body-image-through-social-media

Even older of course is the old Catfish with the curves nobody loves, the MySpace angle, which amounts to the same thing. Taking x amount of doctored pictures at y angle to achieve the best resulting picture.

On top of all the above, throw in a copy of Photoshop to really add some more kick to the flavor.

With the leftovers; there is always the hamstering of HAES (Healthy At Every Size) and mayonnaise.

In short; same shit in a new wrapper. Bon Appetit.

Returning to the OP.

Rather than continue being net account hottie 2,157,659 (yes I pulled that number out of my arse, this is Reddit, not a thesis submission) I did not know existed prior to this reddit post; she has moved on to try and differentiate herself further from all those to sell herself as a brand.

Why she is jumping the gun could be a whole host of reasons, but given her addiction to the attention and validation of social media (judge by her actions, not by her words) I don't think it is from pure selflessness; more like it is a different way for her to try and garner attention and validation as a instant world renowned blogger (the croc tears give it away to me) rather than on her carefully manufactured looks.

Want to prove me wrong? Have her shut off that fresh new website registered October 29th (https://who.is/whois/letsbegamechangers.com).

Finally a shout out to /u/Claude_Reborn for mentioning the damage that happens to girls that party a lot down here; that hot sun of ours is a killer and even the starlet on that blog is not immune judging by that damage on her own skin.

[–]TSL_Clide1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

amongst all the "wow she's so brave" video responses I was pleasantly surprised to find these girls, who really get what's going on here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I noticed this as well, but be aware; the only reason these girls decided to retaliate is because of all the attention Essena has been receiving for her "brave" post. They see competition doing well, so they shoot it down while they can. The fact they attacked her personal life is proof of this. I met these twins as well and let me vouch that they are just as fake as Essena. I'm planning on making a post about all this so be on the lookout

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Who gives a fuck whether it's 100% real or not. Whatever her true motivations may be, she is right. True happiness comes from within.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
