The power of momentum

Isaac Newton’s first law states: An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion, unless acted upon by an external force. It is up to you and only you to provide that external force.

Have you ever felt ‘out of it’ or ‘unmotivated’? You’re usually a pretty productive person but sometimes it’s harder for you to take action and get shit done. Personally, this happens to me on a Monday after a long weekend of partying and having fun. I am far less likely to feel this way on a Thursday night after having a productive week. Much of that has to do with the amount of momentum I have going for me at the moment.

Chad who has been making consistent progress in the gym for three years has an easier time getting in the gym that night than overweight Billy who is just beginning/getting back into it. Why? Chad has a ton of momentum in that area, he’s accumulated small wins that have added up over time. That’s the same reason Chad can more easily game and talk to that smoke show brunette than Billy. Chad has successfully landed ten lays in the past month, Billy has approached two girls in the past six months. Chad has tons of momentum, Billy has none. If Billy began approaching, pulling numbers and running successful game he too could build the momentum to game that smoke show brunette the same way Chad does.

Allow me to use a recent personal example. This past weekend the weather was exceptionally nice, so instead of being productive like I usually am, I took my foot off the throttle and enjoyed myself. Come Monday morning I wake up to a house messier than I would like, my diet the past few days has been shittier than I would like, and my bank account balance lower than I would like. I didn’t feel like doing shit. I had no momentum. But I forced myself to get my ass up, tidy up and make my nutritious smoothie I missed these past two days. It was hard, it took discipline to hit a heavy leg workout later that day. The following day (yesterday/Tuesday) I woke up feeling a bit more motivated, I was productive and hit another quality workout. By the end of the day, not even 48 hours later I felt immensely better. I was more content with my production, I was at ease and less stressed. I felt good. I had built up some solid momentum.

Elaborating in Newton’s first law, we have inertia which is essentially an objective resisting change, whether that change is starting or stopping a motion. It’s the initial actions that require the most energy and effort. The initial strength it takes to begin pushing a stationary pickup truck is far greater than the strength it takes to keep it going. Take some initiative and power through that initial resistance and build some momentum. Things can seem overwhelming when you’re looking at it from the outside, but when you’re in the thick of it, it’s not so bad. That ten page paper is intimidating when you have zero pages down, but then you enter your flow state and begin typing, before you know it you’re three quarters of the way done.

So get started even if it seems impossible right now. Start building that momentum, get those small wins wherever you can. Clean your room, do your laundry you’ve been putting off, reply to your emails. Gather the mental strength to overcome that inertia and get the pick up truck moving; it’ll be much easier to keep it going once you just begin. Build so much momentum you begin to move mountains.

How do you explain all of history’s biggest upsets in pro sports? It’s not always the best team that ends up winning the Super Bowl or the Finals. Sometimes it’s the team that has the most momentum that ends up winning.

Those of you who are football fans probably remember the infamous 18-1 patriots in 2007. The first and still, only team in history to go 16-0 in the regular season. Brady and moss smashed all time touchdown records. They were one of the best teams in all of NFL history. Yet, they ended up losing the big game to the 10-6 giants (13-6 entering the SB).

Now there are many reasons this ended up happening, but the biggest one has to do with momentum. The Giants snuck into the playoffs at with a 10-6 record not even winning their division. However, slowly but surely they began accumulating momentum. They got past the wildcard round, then traveled to first seed 13-3 Dallas and somehow pulled off an upset. When the Super Bowl came around, the Giants had pulled off three upsets, the most recent being an overtime win on the road against the Brett Favre led Packers. They had the momentum of an avalanche.

It didn’t matter that the Patriots hadn’t lost a game that season, it didn’t matter what their records were at that point. The Giants had built up so much momentum the past month, they were able to take down the Goliath.

Agreed. This is also the reason to keep your game active even if you have a partner. I am not saying that you should fuck around when you are in a relationship, but you should keep your female hunting muscle memories trained. Keep orbiters around

Recently I had a tough reminder, I mutually broke up with my LTR gf of 4 years. During this time she kept her Instagram very active, and all her orbiters around, while I did not. She was not cheating on me but like all young and beautiful girls she loved the attention.

It took me weeks to go back in the game. She was back dating the day she decided to do it, and she had all contenders already screened out.

Agreed that while it may be much easier for women to get back on the horse and date, they are looking for chads that will date them and not just sleep around. Therefor it’s actually just as difficult for them to find someone who’s a “chad” to settle down w/ them much like it is hard for us to find a hot chick who just wants to sleep around..

This is so true lol

I exercise with my body weight twice a day except for fridays and saturdays and it's extremely difficult to start it on sunday. Matter of fact I already feel guilty for skipping the days!

Keeping rest days to a minimum helps tremendously with this, like only having one rest day per week. Which obviously means reducing your work load accordingly but the consistency will more than make up for it.

Aight, thanks for the suggestion.

I indeed skip it entirely for the rest days(Friday and Saturday chosen just in case to have time for parties or family) but I indeed should start doing something different like stretching or half my normal workout.

Stretching wont change your posture. Stretching actually have no long term benefits and only have short term benefits. Unless it "dynamic" stretching. Which is basically just moving to get warm. So you can safe that time. I would also keep at least only full rest day. Having no rest days at all is generally not recommend.

That would certainly save me some time and sweat.

But on balance it seems to go against what I have heard for years, both from sources that might not know what they are talking about but also from ones that very much do.

Well it is a highly believed "myth", even so much that there is a educational field dedicated to it. (Chiropractic) however all this is outdated knowledge. Today what is known as the biopsychosocial model is used instead. What you’ve just described are habits. Habits you have unknowingly built up control your actions way more than you would imagine.

The brain loves habits because it can do them on autopilot, your brain’s favourite place to chill out. When you try to create a new habit, you are switching autopilot off. All brain wants to do is switch it back on and go home to eat pizza or something.

Every time you reinforce a new habit, like exercising at a certain time of the day, a little bit of it leaks into your autopilot. Keep doing it until it’s full and it will become another happy place for your brain

I can definitely see how you made that connection. I’ll make another nuance by considering one of my favorite should-be-laws: How you do one thing is how you do everything, how you do everything is how you do one thing. Habits don’t just help you perform those habits, they help you take in better and bigger habits. Which ends up forming a positive feedback loop.

When you constantly get your wins through your habits in the gym, you feel more confident in yourself. This makes it easier to establish habits of eating healthier, reading mode, anything really.

The habits you create builds confidence because you keep the promises you make to yourself. Which ends up building momentum in your life, allowing you to establish better habits with more confidence to achieve bigger goals.

It’s pretty simple yet quite effective. It helps if you have a scale but you can also eyeball it as I did for many years. Here it is:

  • I begin with water so the blades are lubricated and it blends better, helps a ton.
  • Then 125g of greens, I use “power greens” from Costco which is just a blend of spinach and kale. This is the most important part, the main reason for the smoothie, getting raw, uncooked, organic greens into your body.
  • Then about 280g of fruits to help with the taste, and for more nutritiousness.
  • Followed by three or four big spoonfuls of oats. Rolled oats or steel cut oats both work fine,
  • Three or four Smyrna figs, though I’m sure any type of figs would work. These are just the ones Costco sells, all of this can be picked up in one Costco trip which is how I re-up.
  • Blend it, and then sprinkle some chia seeds on top. Cheers!

This is called homeostasis.

the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

If you're moving, your brain wants you to keep moving. If you're on the couch, that's where your brain wants you to stay. Changing "rest to active" or "active to rest" takes energy. Our body wants to conserve energy despite our goals.

Takeaway - don't sit down when it's time to get shit done and you just got home from work. Workout immediately.

The way I interpreted it is more so, "an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force." Objects in motion remain in motion until acted upon things like friction, and air resistance.

In life, we experience tons of friction and resistance. This pandemic is a great example; lots of people were in momentum with their workout routines at the gym, with their productivity at their workplace, on track with their meal prepping and dieting, etc., and then all the sudden they have to stay home, and finances are tight, and gyms are closed, and they have constant access to the fridge and pantry. shit like this can easily turn you into a fat slob who snacks all day, doesn't work out, and is unproductive and broke.

It's up to you to surmise some motivation, and regain the momentum. Yes, internal motivation has been proven to be more effective than external motivation (for example, you're more likely to actually lose weight if you're doing it for your own health, rather than to please your significant other), but external motivations do help as well. The chaos of your messy house, the fat gain, the brokeness, those can all be external forces that motivate you to resume better habits and revive your momentum.

It's a proven stat that people who exercise consistently at the same time of day each time, are less likely to abandon their workouts. Establishing routine helps maintain habits.

I've found that it is easier to stay on my game 100% of the time as opposed to 99% of the time. The trick is to be careful about what I choose to do. The life habits have to be robust and sustainable, meaning that I say no to a lot, but I prioritize fitness, diet, sleep, work, and a few strong friendships. If I keep those priorities and my habits steady, then I flourish. If not, I generally fuck something up.

It's kind of like that story about giving a mouse a cookie...If I stay out late, then I sleep in, then I eat late, then I might want a donut, then my workout it isn't as solid, etc. When I deviate from my path, shit happens, and I have to get back on course immediately or I start to slip.

That is a good point. It’s not to say that the Giants had more momentum than the Patriots and that’s why they won. If it was all and only about momentum, the Titans would have won last year after upsetting both the Patriots and Ravens on their home turf.

It’s more that: The Giants were able to build up so much momentum they were able to compete and eventually beat an objectively superior team. The momentum the Giants had made up for their lack in other areas. Look at it this way: take the 2007 Patriots and Giants, have them prepare for 5 months to play one another. No upsets leading up to the game, no momentum, who wins?

Going back to the big picture, momentum can help you accomplish tasks you previously thought were impossible. It can empower you, it can give you confidence to do things you wouldn’t dare try without momentum on your side.

Honestly, I’m proud of the feedback I’ve received. I’ve heard more people benefit from my advice than people who hate on it. And that’s good enough for me. This is my first post on the main sub and like you and a few others point out, I don’t have a PhD in Physics; I’ve taken one physics class in my 16 years of education and that was AP physics in hs.

With that said, the section(s) in my post about physics are probably the least important parts. They are obviously an attempt to draw analogies into real life. I never expected them to be perfect, but they seemed to have helped some people some way, and that was my goal. Nevertheless I’ll upvote you for helping me improve, maybe next time my physics analogies will be more scientifically accurate ;)
