fucking disgusting

do you know why we only use male animals in experiments?

  1. it stops any chance of the animals copulating

  2. if all experiments of the same type use the same sex and animal, we can more easily compare experiments

it isn't misogyny ... it is why we use the same animal, diet, experimental extraction etc etc.

I don't think this comes from a place of social justice but scientific certainty. Male and female animals can be separated to prevent copulation. If using equal numbers of males and females was the norm then comparison would not be an issue.

I assume there are more factors in play as to why male animals are more tested on and it would take a more scientifically literate person to break it all down.

This is actually a rather serious problem in biomedical sciences right now. It doesn't have anything to do with feminism.

The issue (as any TRPers would agree with) is that males and females are different. The most recent evidence for this came from pain studies, whereby male rats were affected by the male pheromones being produced by male researchers. This caused them to become stressed, and stress induces a state of pain relief in mammals ("stress induced analgesia"). So if you're doing research on pain, you're messing up your results if you use only male test subjects being tested by male lab workers. This work was recently reported by Jeff Mogil at McGill University, if you want to look it up.

The primary reason male mammals are used more than female mammals (at least in my area, neuroscience) is because of the estrus cycle in females. Each female mammal goes through a cycle of changing hormones, and that was just one less confounding variable to deal with by using males.

Scientists use male rats because given roughly equal numbers at birth a population can survive losing a lot more males before sexual maturity then females.

Great. Preparing an era of female disposability.

We can experiment on you and toss you in the trash.

Welcome to our world! say male mice.

Soon this will turn into "Terrible testing being done on female animals!"

This doesn't sound like a horrible idea to me.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
