I recently picked up jiu jitsu, it’s all around been very beneficial to my health, mindset, and being so tired you feel like you’re gonna pass out after is a great time to lay on the ground and pray. However, my gym, and from what I understand most, have a tradition of bowing to the mat and bowing to a picture of Royce Gracie before and after practice begins. As a Christian, I can’t help but feel like this is bordering on if not just outright idolatry. What do you guys think? I was planning on telling my coach I can not do this next time I go, but I wanted to check here and see if this is really a necessary thing to do or if I’m overthinking it.
