Driving anxiety

I’m currently 22, don’t have my drivers’ license.

People around me are pressuring me (mainly family) to get it, and obviously it would be for the best if I do, for many reasons, jobs, girls, etc.

However I have extreme anxiety behind the wheel, I simply do not trust myself to drive a 2 tonne death machine on a busy road. In fact, I find it crazy that it’s a societal norm and generally accepted fact that we all do. I struggle to keep it together on an empty parking lot and I’m yet to drive on a quiet estate let alone a road because anywhere with cars driving around spooks me. I get nervous whenever I even think about it, I feel like it’s an innate fear I have and I can’t seem to get over it.

Did anybody else have this and how do you overcome it?

Does anyone else not have a license and how does it affect them? So far it’s been fine for me because I’m only 22 but I feel like I’m the future it’s going to become a problem.

The only way to get over it is to do it. Start in a parking lot, have a trusted friend with a license in the passenger seat and just keep doin it and moving on to busier and faster roads. You’ll get over it.

Get driving lessons.

Cost me $500 for 10, 45min lessons.

They have a brake and you'll be safe. Aswell the car you're in will be marked as a "Student driver" so people will stay away from you on the road.

Jump in head first.

In the UK most people hire professional instructors to teach them. Maybe it would help you to have someone in the car who’s done it 1000 times before and is confident in you

You have to have a license pal. Its mandatory for so many aspects of adult life.

Ask a friend to help you. Use their car if possible go to a parking, country, some place where you wont kill anyone or yourself and get comfortable.

I had a buddy who was 25 before he got his license. I forced him to drive my car. I gave him no choice. Drive us home or he walks home. We did this for a couple weeks. (Illegally) Then I took him to the DOT and road with him and the driver instructor. He passed and drives every day now with no anxiety. This lead him to get a GF and changed his life positively in many aspects. He doesn't rely on me anymore.

Practice makes perfect.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
