I enjoyed His Dark Materials when I was younger (and I'm still fond), I think in some ways Asriel might qualify (though it's been a while since I've read it).

I would say Odysseus/Ulysses. He fought in the Trojan War. Then had a shit time leading his crew back to his home. The obstacles were so wild there's an epic about it (The Odyssey). He came back home only to see tons of suitors freeloading in his home trying to marry his widowed wife and maybe kill off his son (the next in line). As an act of vengeance, Odysseus sneaks in as an old, disabled man and ends up killing all the freeloading suitors. Alpha as fuck.

For an example of Beta, I would say Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. I barely remember the story, but he was some poor dude? And he had a major crush on some rich chick he knew. He felt unworthy b/c he was poor. So then he got rich somehow. And held lavish parties at his mansion in hopes of getting that chick to his party. Turns out that chick is married and only felt so-so feelings towards him. Gatsby still wants to bone and pursues. Ends up getting shot in the head. I believe the tragic nature of Gatsby is what made the story interesting in literature.
