IQ tests?

The United States government and educational institutions take IQ test very seriously. Now obviously they don't call them IQ test they call them the ASVAB and the SAT.

If it wasn't a big deal with real world ramifications then buttloads of money wouldn't be sent creating and administering these tests.

Not free, but cheap and nationally recognized:

Apply for Mensa and take their (usually) monthly admissions test. Iirc it costs about $50. If you pass you are admitted, and you've scored in the top 2% of people in your country.

You can also order their practice test and submit it for scoring- they will return a somewhat vague answer of "you would-likely/would-be/would-not-likely pass the official timed/proctored admissions test. Around $25, or was a few years ago.

Also many psychologists are qualified to administer a standardized IQ test. Depending on where you live that could be cheaper or more expensive than the Mensa route.

If you want a personal benchmark, take the test and see how it goes. It's hard to use that test score (or membership) as a leg up in a professional setting though. It's not an indicator of what you know, more of an indicator of how quickly you can pick up something new.

IQ itself is fairly meaningless because life is not a vacuum. Skill, experience, focus, and will all matter more.

I've taken a bunch of the dumb little online tests and always get about the same results so I reckon they're a decent judge. And I pretty much know where I am. Not a genius. Not a dumbfuck. So I'm cool

They do track an underlying something that is important.

The folks I know with high test scores are all intelligent.

A good proxy to an IQ test is to take an official GRE practice test and look at your percentile score.

Actually, with IQ tests focus on your percentile score.

Someone mentioning their score without knowing the test and its standard deviation and percentiles in the population means nothing.

Can you Ace tests without studying for more than an hour or so and get through school where it just "comes naturally?" If so you're smart.

Not that it matters much.
