Over a population, a lot of that - fucked up piercing, garish tats, unnaturally died hair - is a way for them to "share their emotional pain" without verbalizing it.

And we aren't talking a small, easily coverable tat or a belly button ring. And yes, we all know that one person with pink hair 7 gauges and 14 tats and is well adjusted. But we're talking populations.
