I always tried to cheer boys up and because boys can’t say cute things to each other so it doesn’t sound gay i toke advantage of my gender to cheer them up by mentioning what I truly see beautiful about them cuz i am disgust of lies i know i am not doing much but at least i am trying and sorry about my English its not my native language :)

[–]Avacadoos 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Actually my parents have been separated for close upon a decade. I haven't seen my dad for about 8 years now (He got remarried and emigrated). I'm grateful for everything she does. I'm 16 now and have my GCSE'S in a few months. Hopefully I can pass it with ease.

[–]pika-B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/avacadoos You got this life can be hard but you are harder idk if you says that in English but i think you got my point I believe that you are one of the least people that can outpizza the hut you passed you through a lot of stuff but don’t be sad about it cuz every single action and every mistake you did made you become the perfect person you are

[–]Pineapple-shades15 25 points26 points  (5 children)

[–]pika-B 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Thank you all guys i ducking love reedit community its one of the many reasons i am keeping up on this

[–]Potato0nFire 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Same. I’ve had some really good conversations here and I’m always down for the memes, so I stick around. :)

[–]pika-B 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Memes can be both fun and meaningful and thats what many of the people don’t understand they think that we are amateur for laughing at serious stuff where we are bringing those stuff to the table to talk about without being sad because there are many depressing stuff in the world so its cool to find modern way to discuss those things

[–]Potato0nFire 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Exactly. They’re the zeitgeist of our times and they frequently convey more than what’s seen at a glance. I recently saw a comment criticizing Zoomers for their tendency to meme really serious subject matters because they were allegedly desensitizing themselves to current events & atrocities. My immediate thought however was that the OP had completely missed the point of those memes, in that they were attempting to make their subject matters more approachable and relatable to stimulate constructive conversations.

To me at least, meme culture has become its own subculture that translates real-world events into relatable snippets at its most serious, and pokes fun at the status quo at its most innocent.

[–]pika-B 8 points9 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY!! Meme culture has waaay bigger meaning than most people think

[–]maximptjee 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Dont say that you arent doing much. This helps so many guys in so many different ways. Pls continue with what youre doing. It would certainly help me out if someone did this.

[–]pika-B 8 points9 points  (6 children)

u/maximptjee I am on this I won’t stop and from what i read i admit that you are brave to say everything you said and you truly sound like a nice guy that i wouldn’t mind to hug after everything happened to me haha long story but ill make it short i hugged a friend of mine and he is really nice but once i hugged him he had a boner and that was extremely weird but i talked to him about it yesterday and he swore that it was random and he didn’t mean anything and everything is ok now(ω^)

[–]maximptjee 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Thats pretty sad but sometimes that just happens. Im glad you guys are ok now.

[–]pika-B 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]Ryctre 5 points6 points  (1 child)

For me personally and I've seen people comment the same but a small comment like that can keep us going for years. Shirts will move way up in the rotation if someone said they liked. It's a beautiful thing you're doing and way to be the change you want to see in the world.

[–]pika-B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/ryctre I believe that everyone can make a change and also everyone deserves love and i do this because its what I believe is the right thing to do i got bullied couple of times but still this is nothing compared to the times where people were nice to me

I don’t understand what it’s like for men suffering from depression, and I agree with this.. but I still think depression in general is the bottom photo. I went to the hospital to have my stomach pumped after a suicide attempt and they sent me home saying “you’re fine”. As sad as it is, I really think everyone with depression is treated like shit. Men tho defiantly have it bad too, and I’m so sorry guys have to experience that.

Edit: I forgot to mention, back in the 1930’s or something like that.. I did have a male family member who committed suicide. Depression was not talked about and defiantly not amongst men. My great uncle was never given proper treatment and lost his life at a young age (30’s) all you men suffering out there. I stand with you. You are not weak. Society is

[–]Dan-Tican't meme 299 points300 points  (11 children)

You're a good woman, thank you.

[–][deleted] 144 points145 points  (10 children)

Thank you so much. I really hope I am :)

[–][deleted] 90 points91 points  (5 children)

The fact you acknowledged that everyone has this issue shows you're a good woman. :)

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (4 children)

Ty! I see people suffering and I just wish society was more accepting that men do have emotions and are allowed to show it. I think it’s really honorable when a guy can tell me they too suffer from a mental illness. To me that shows strength and lots of courage. We’re all fighting a very tough battle

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (3 children)

In my opinion it's "manlier" if a man expresses his emotions. I completely agree, the hardest thing in the world is telling your problems and seeking help, becuase that takes maturity and humility.

[–]Dan-Tican't meme 22 points23 points  (2 children)

[–]krankz 57 points58 points  (20 children)

Women tend to have a harder time receiving adequate healthcare because doctors tend to think we are overreacting or seeking attention. Whether it has to do with depression or not, we are less likely to be taken seriously for our medical concerns.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (11 children)

Don’t even get me started on that. It drives me insane how sometimes I’m not taken seriously. I get it doctors are humans and make mistakes, but there have been too many mistakes in my city where people needed mental health help and ended up committing suicide. Now there is a major investigation into who fucked up. This cannot continue. Far too many people loose their lives to suicide.

[–]gunthrak_warstoner 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Yep. Or another example, adhd is much more commonly diagnosed in boys than girls because the original test subjects were all male and different genders have different symptoms. The girls were just told to be more ladylike and quiet.

[–]AmiamtedmoviesaregodIdentifies as a Cybertruck 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Whoever parents tells a girl to be ladylike because she acts like one of us can be fisted by a dinosaur

[–]Noym2s 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Guys aren't taken seriously either because "we gotta be manly". trust me, Ik sexism is a very real and dangerous issue, but I think that mental health just kinda sucks for both men and women

[–]hippoputamus 4 points5 points  (4 children)

”real men don’t cry” and ”women are overly emotional” are the different sides of the same coin. The stigma makes it hard for men to reach out and harder for women to be taken seriously once they do. Mental health issues sure suck for everyone but sexism is a factor making it even harder, for everyone, so it’s not something to dismiss (which I’m not necessarily saying you’re trying to do, but to me it kind of sounded a bit like it because of the words ’but’ and ’just’ so I just wanted to comment on it a little)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Same happened to me. My parents told me I’m too sensitive and attention seeking after I got diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish men and women acknowledged each other's challenges instead of competing over who has it worse. We're all struggling at the end of the day.

[–]FajitaLad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You think you're cool? Making me cry? Well you are, thank you. I needed to hear that.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah it makes me really sad that guys feel like they have to hide their feelings or “toughen up” . They’re human too . Emotions don’t make anyone week or make you any less of a man.

[–]RamennoodlepoodleK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing with female depression is I agree but when it is represented it is romanticized

[–]R3x18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you

[–]a_nihilistic_cat 284 points285 points  (47 children)

Yeah this is pretty sad. Took years to pound into my husband's skull that working through your feelings is a healthy thing to do and that I'm not judging him for it. That "boys don't cry" shit is fucking poison

[–]A_Hatless_Casual 123 points124 points  (37 children)

One issue is a lot of men (myself included) lack the ability to express our emotions. We just get so used to bottling it up it just become automatic.

[–]Practical_Government 57 points58 points  (14 children)

I hear that. Haven’t cried in like a decade, and I tried recently, and I couldn’t. It’s weird how it’s like the well dries up, and you have to have something major to fill that back up again

[–]polishdiddy 48 points49 points  (7 children)

And then, not being able to cry makes you even sadder, because you feel like something is wrong with you for not crying in a certain situation.

[–]a_nihilistic_cat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's actually surprisingly common to not cry in certain situations. I learned that people express grief and pain naturally in different ways. It doesn't mean you're not hurting or that your pain is less than anyone else if you don't cry. No need to feel guilty, but I get that due to the social expectation, it's hard to not feel guilty too

[–]Hoo18Dirt Is Beautiful 14 points15 points  (4 children)

I physically can’t cry from anything besides pain. I have watched really sad stories, and I usually don’t feel sad or anything while all my friends are crying their hearts out.

[–]Practical_Government 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I relate to this way too much

[–]robmonzillia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can‘t even cry from pain. The last time I cried was 8-9 years ago when my ex left me and I still feel like she was the love of my life. It genuinely hurt me a lot but crying didn’t change a thing. Since then I feel like nothing hurts me anymore.

Though I have to add that I don‘t miss her anymore and that I manage to function normally, yet there‘s no pain anymore in any way that I feel.

[–]Beemovieisgood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like a piece of shit for not being sad let alone crying two of my family members have died this week of different causes one just today and I can’t cry even if wanted to.

[–]AmiamtedmoviesaregodIdentifies as a Cybertruck 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I can say my emotions... I’ve been though so much and got diagnosed with depression... I can’t really express my emotions as much as I used to... I talk to people about them because you should never hold it inside... and thank god my doctor is not like one of those people who look at boys with depression and are like oh well

[–]a_nihilistic_cat 4 points5 points  (4 children)

That's good, you should talk about it when you get the chance. There's too many people who are invalidating towards men when it involves their emotions

[–]AmiamtedmoviesaregodIdentifies as a Cybertruck 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah but i did that

[–]AldrocBecause That's What Fearows Do 8 points9 points  (20 children)

Idk if it's due to bottling up or not, but after 20 years of not being allowed to express anger (I was the youngest in the family by a 5 year margin, and younger ones are supposed to respect elders). Whenever I got even a bit angry, I was told to knock it off and got yelled at even more. Now, even the little things irritate me and I just explode. But only within. I just shut up on the outside because I don't know how I will react once the words start flowing. And apparently, shutting up also pisses them off, that means more yelling and the cycle continues. Also did I mention the only emotions I can feel are anger and fear? Yea. I literally do not know what actually feeling "happy" feels like. I don't know why... But it is what it is. I don't even know what I'm living for tbh

[–]A_Hatless_Casual 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, that sounds like me as well. Only difference I'm the middle child of 5 children. It helps nothing that all my family talks crap not just behind my back, (they tell me about it later) but to my face as well.

I think I'm just going to cut them all out of my life and do something I was never really allowed to do: worry about me.

[–]weIrDInTroVeRt-Identifies as a Cybertruck 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Same. Wish my parents let me vent for a little to show my emotions. The kid they know is not the real me. I don’t know what I’m living for either.

[–]wt__ 6 points7 points  (5 children)

This right here is why I went through a complete mental breakdown by myself...that damn “boys don’t cry” bullshit...it took me a decade of mental torture to get my mind right...and the death of my aunt...who I was very close to...

[–]a_nihilistic_cat 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Sorry you had to go through all that. It's really awful. Hopefully you're in a better place and able to express yourself. Did you go see someone? If not, I'd highly recommend it

[–]wt__ 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I still haven’t gone to see anybody and I was pretty gold and emotionless for about 3 or 4 years after she died in 2009...my best friend knew everything I was going through mentally...and he tried to help me the best he could...without making it seem like he was...he had seen me dealing with it the whole time and tried to help steer me in the right direction...sometimes it didn’t work...but I started to get things together about 2013 just in time to meet my now wife of 6 years...I’m much happier now and don’t feel like I want to jump into traffic or just sleep all day...thank you for showing concern...it feels good knowing there are people who do truly care even if they don’t know you...

[–]a_nihilistic_cat 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'm glad you're doing better. I may not know you, but I know pain. I can empathize. Progress isn't linear, and it's natural to have setbacks and fucked up days. As long as you're trying, you're bound to succeed. I know therapy is inaccessible unless you're rich, but if you can squeeze in a free counselling session here and there, I promise you it's much better than nothing. Thank you for sharing your pain with me.

[–]SushantLinjaraLives in a Van Down by the River 11 points12 points  (2 children)

In india no one talks about depression and mental stress. They think of depression as a Coolness factor which they can show off. Recently an actor committed suicide due to depression and now people are trying to understand what it really is. It takes someone's life to make these people understand about something.

[–]birchywebyLives in a Van Down by the River 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've got to be joking me!

But you're definitely right about that last part.

I stand with you guys this should be taken care of more and also depression should be talked about widely open and not to asham the one that has it so he/she can speak about it.i used to cut my hand and i still haven’t stopped doing it i will try my best to find another way to erase the pain and since then feel free to talk to me I won’t judge and i will listen which i wish people can do that to us more than talking over things we know

ikr, :(. I’m female and I understand how much males have to go through with the constant expectations. I wish I could do something..

[–]bOnkBonK_trans rights 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I agree, there is a lot of double standards around mental health. Women are told that they're crazy and that they need to cheer up, men are dismissed are told to man up. Society sucks at supporting the mental health of everyone, and I do agree that women receive more sympathy and attention, I just don't think we should separate the parties. :)

[–]DarkWitxh 5 points6 points  (1 child)

One of my male friends had depression, I talked him out of killing himself. A week a little I was dealing with depression and told him I needed help and he responded with "Idk what to tell you uh... Don't cut yourself again lol" Then left me on read.

Let's just say I haven't talked to him in over three years.

[–]theavarageguy18 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I posted something on my Instagram about "men's feelings are as valid as anyone else's" and I tried to make it as neutral as possible to not have those comments like "women suffer too" or "we should discuss about women's issues" or directly just insult me, (which was what I was expecting) but for my surprise people were nice and I didn't see any hate comment, I am still very surprised but I guess that's something good

He’s not saying that girls depression isn’t an issue he’s just saying that men are more vulnerable to it and have less support and help because of the whole “real men don’t cry” and the fact that we’re basically taught from birth not to show our emotions. It’s also people dismissing men’s depression and just telling us to “man up”. Like I said he’s not saying girls depression isn’t an issue or that they are always believed 100% of the time, he’s saying that girls are waaaaaay more likely to be helped and given support, time and care

[–]RapidFireFairy 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Like society gaf about women lol

[–]SharpenYourCrayons 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yeah, like come on. Sure people might act like mental health is important, but my own father told me my depression wasn’t real. I was struggling with body issues in a small town. I literally almost killed myself in high school because nobody, not even my school ‘counselor,’ would get me any help. God, I hate posts like this that assume all women have better access to help. It might seem that way, but usually only the rich and privileged can afford to get decent help. Us poor folks (yes, women too) fall through the cracks.

How did I get 21k upvotes from such a lazy meme..

[–]saharkblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it's real as hell

[–]go_and_grab_it[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly accurate representation of how the society expect men not to show weakness from the very young age. It is just like the saying ‘hero may bleed but one can’t cry.’

[–]_hax88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m depressed for years now and nobody gives a shit

[–]thismytenthaccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe both genders have it just as hard usually when girls are depressed ( from what I've seen) people often call it attention seeking and them just faking it. I go to an all girl's school and never really socialise with boys lol so I'm not really sure if one gender has it worst.

[–]Akira-is-bae 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Good meme but isn’t this the same sub that shits on 14 year old girls who say they have depression ???? Anyhow this is a problem that should be addressed cuz men’s depression is definitely ignored.

[–]yonatan_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real

The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything

What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end

And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here

What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end

And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt

If I could start again A million miles away I will keep myself I would find a way

[–]Noym2s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right!?

[–]zeek1999 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think the world has a mental health problem disguised as an ego problem disguised as a political problem and noone wants to talk about it and instead pretend we are all normal ok humans.

Its just the blind leading the blind

[–]ib026memer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is so true. even my friends didnt care me when i was sad :(

[–]StaticDashy 9 points10 points  (12 children)

Redditors: men are treated unequally for depression (which I’m not denying isn’t true) Also redditors: 14 year old girls fake depression

[–]SharpenYourCrayons 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I feel like most people on this sub lack empathy and insight into what the other gender faces. Our experiences aren’t THAT different. We just need to stop acting like we’re two completely different species and realize we both face similar struggles. The invalidation has got to stop.

[–]dentedgal 4 points5 points  (6 children)

This is what makes these posts kinda bittersweet to me.

Shedding light on male depression is needed, but this community has a tendency to do it on the expense of others (not all ofc) and thats wrong.

We should take people suffering from depression seriosuly, regardless of things like gender and age.

[–]OutWithTheNew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shades of gray. You can feel depressed about something and not be clinically depressed.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Oh really? What about all the girls who are told to 'stop attention seeking, I bet you're just faking it to look edgy and quirky'?

I think depression is dismissed for both genders, actually.

[–]Howareualive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back here we treat everybody equally , by equally we mean we don't care about male or female or depression in general.

[–]FacepalmFriday 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's a joke people .

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Society isn't sending a good message about either... I've noticed that it's trendy to be depressed for teenage girls.

Seeing that last pic reminds me of a story my dad's uncle was telling me about the time his sister (my grandmother) tied him to a lawn chair and tossed him in the pool. Their next door neighbor noticed what happened and ran to rescue him, thankfully saving his life. He was only like 6 years old...

[–]a-keber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a female I still feel like I'm on the bottom pic with all my fellow bois

(I understand the concept but in my country mental diseases are not treated the right way in general)
