I believe accusing a man of being a rapist without any evidence should be illegal

Now my story doesn't carry as much impact, as it was in highschool and
people are mean and immature in highschool, but when I was in school,
a group of girls would call me a rapist. I have no idea what started
this rumor, but it spread quickly. I had to come out and explain that
I was homosexual (something I preferred to keep hidden), had to talk
to the principle several times, explaining that I did not ever
sexually harass anyone, and lost all my friends and had my own sister
say that she was ashamed to be related to me for it. It got so bad I
started considering suicide.

Now imagine this senario playing out as an adult male, being accused
of rape, who can't just move schools or tell the authority's he's just
being bullied.
