It is a result of idealized expectations placed on potential husbands and seeing all the imploding Boomer marriages. When only a small subset of men qualify as "marriage material" in women's eyes, it is very tempting to rely on the nanny state and not have to share and compromise in raising a family.

A good place to start is to look at what degrees men and women choose to get. I suspect men choose degrees that take them into fields that have more opportunity for advancement and less felxability in with the work/life balance. Also, see if you can find research on how hours worked and days taken off effect advancement.
