Anybody in court is going to defend themselves and spin the story to put them in the best light. The discrepancy in sentencing comes down to social stigma and the judges. Women are often awarded kids because as a society we still see raising children as primarily a womans job

To be fair that probably does happen a ton at comic cons, ask any female cosplayer to tell you their worst times at cons and you'll be pretty disgusted. I'd argue in the specific case of comic cons women are definitely treated worse than men, and a lot of that probably had to do with most of the attendees being males, and not all of them being the most socially adept
