Interesting off topic post...I'll shoot for the possibility of vicarious living. I believe the people you are referring to have been born into/fall into a mindset of "I can experience all the best things the world has to offer from magazines/the internet, without ever having to leave the comfort of my home!" If it's their first time meeting an American they are often semi starstruck, so you almost start off with an advantage right out the gate. This applies all over Europe. Never been to Florence but generally got this reaction in Rome. They tend to understand a decent amount of English too. Asking for directions or a smoke/light are all easy openers as well if ya need it.

This kinda ties into a train of thought I was on earlier.
