If you're paying no rent or below market rent rate then do it for as long as is tolerable. Also don't fall for the trap of thinking that buying a house to live in is better than renting because that house you live in could have been rented out or sold to buy better investments so you end up wasting a lot of money if you buy a house and live in it. I think there are many things a young man could do worse than watch House of Cards, which will educate him in how the world works.
