My ex uses chilling language like that all the time. The goal is to link what you're doing to something socially terrible (ie: stalking) to shut down any legitimate points you may have. Although I agree the reality of him ever collecting the money is minimal at best, in Ontario he has a number of tools at his disposal including garnish wages and forced seizure and sale of property and land. The catch is these tools require due process, can't just jump to them, and every one requires a follow on court appearance and court order.

I have young children. Reading this infuriates me. I know the "right" thing to do on discovering abuse like this is to call the police but I'll say it would take every single ounce of self control to not drag these two into the street by their hair and literally beat them to death in broad daylight if this ever happened to my child.

Depends on where you live. Canada used a discredited small sample study of children's costs and extrapolated to horrific results. They've admitted the formula used includes a support component as well. Child costs in Canada are open ended too, thanks to "section 7" expenses. Child care cost and enforcement in Canada directly results in tragic suicide stories here every year. It's taboo to discuss though because "think of the children"

In a different life I worked as a banker. I saw a lot of divorces & estates. Let me give you and everyone a bit of wisdom: People, men and women (with some exception) all get weird when money is involved. That awesome guy or amazing girl will quietly turn full on greed eventually during the process. Promises like that, from the vast majority of people, are worthless.

This. My ex bought into the propaganda and ended up stuck in a pretty good divorce fantasy. She still has this aura of entitlement and idea of vagina = all the money and the final say on everything. It's been kind of fun actually watching the fantasy be disassembled brick by brick as she starts to understand it doesn't work that way and it's not 1968 anymore.

I like it and think there's a lot of validity to it. Having said that, introspection is valuable. Yes, at least in Canada, what you owned prior to marriage you continue to own. At least that's the simple version....basically you get to subtract from your "family" net worth the value of assets from before marriage. That doesn't protect you from having to sell or transfer some of those pre-marriage assets to cover money needed to equalize your family net worth. Except if you have the cash (or most of it), it's still a horrible idea to spend it. Whether a house, car, etc...., you are ALWAYS better off spending the banks money than your own. Do the math, any debt you pay is simple interest, declining balance. In contrast, your cash invested enjoys compounding returns (esp with interest & dividend paying investment) on an increasing balance. At the end of a loan term, unless your investments tanked, you're always better off.
