Worries me that she didn't tell you right away , she had two occasions to tell you, before you met them and when you had the first talk. You only had your own feeling because you sensed something going on. How was her behavior during the meeting with all the friends? In addition if she says she only see him with friends around and only on occasions, just be there. You handled it right, she didn't.
