I would say there is a third option. You can do some charm practice and charm the (probably unattractive women) before arguing your side. It's a really good observation. I wrote an entire article on this a couple years ago (with graphs etc.) http://swooptheworld.com/the-alpha-beta-illusion/ Basically you have to judge this type of stuff on the girl and her relative value to yours.

I think they give "OK" advice it's just that they leave out big parts of advice. "I want a guy with a sense of humor." = "I want a guy who is attractive in many ways, teases me and has a fun vibe." "Be yourself." = "I don't want to sleep with a poser. I want you to be yourself so I can easily see if you have a high sexual market value or not and choose if I want you or not more easily." "Confident." = "Confident, aloof, fearless and maybe even a little cocky."

The book is for the people out there that haven't yet learned that, that haven't learned that it is the nature of women to…
