It's a good life lesson, and one that applies really well on Reddit, that when you're arguing with someone, you are often not trying to persuade the person you're arguing with. You are often persuading the third person who is just on the sidelines reading the entire exchange, who never comments at all.

My first thought when I saw those ads was that they were a waste of time. Reactions like the ones we've seen reveal that it's not a waste of time, and we really do need to reiterate the fact of the causal link between obesity and cancer. And it's tragic that we do. People objecting to these ads are the reason a cancer research charity has had to spend money on these ads, because they're going to save more lives than spending that money on research. I've worked at places that payed a decent wage, but wouldn't hire a woman because the people in management were so sexist. I've had managers openly laugh about it after interviews they've had, then given the candidate the usual boilerplate excuse when they don't hire them. Doesn't take too many companies like that before there's a disparity.

Yeah, but there's people who feel the same way about words like 'nigger' or 'faggot'. Just cause you use it freely doesn't mean people aren't going to offended, cause those people have had it said to them with absolute vitriol and hate behind it because of something they are that they can't change. That's why most people tend to agree to avoid using those words too casually.

It's a very difficult situation. On the one hand, it's a very unusual story, from someone who, at this point, is almost most famous for lying. On the other hand, you can't trivialise a rape accusation, or attack someone for not going to the police and reporting it. If it were found to be untrue, the consequences would be very serious, but we can't say that without any form of investigation, which will probably never happen.
