When you sign up for selective service, you get a number, they pull your number, you get drafted. There's no bias involved in the selection process. I dunno about your area, but in my area you save maybe 5% on your rent by going with a studio instead of a 2BR. Sometimes a studio is even more expensive. Landlords know that it's preferable to live alone so they keep single occupancy properties at a high price. So it's either save 5% and live alone or save 45% and get a roommate.

Even if they end up not charging them with a crime, the time from when they go to jail to when they're let off them can be months. You can't keep someone in custody if you haven't charged them with a crime. Those charges can be dropped at any point, but you can't just sit in jail indefinitely without being charged. The system isn't perfect, but it's not that fucking broken.

My parents split when I was about 12, but luckily the divorce was fairly amicable since the reason for the divorce was my dad coming out as gay (pretty good reason for divorce if you ask me). Jails don't only hold non-convicted inmates though, they hold convicted inmates who are generally serving less than one year, as was my case when I was convicted of a minor crime in Florida (and as the website notes -- 364 days or less = county jail, 365 days or more = state prison). I'd expect someone who works in the field to know that. That said, you're kind of right in that there aren't large differences between jail and prison once you're convicted, but there are some notable ones.
