While technically true, I don't think people realize unregulated hypergamy and social decay are truly the primary reasons behind plummeting fertility rates. The problem with comparing historical automation with modern automation is that historical automation more or less facilitated certain positions instead of completing them from start to finish. They helped workers be more productive, but they still needed the operation of the workers. With modern automation, the intended goal is to automate 95+ percent of the process. So even if the entire process isn't automated, the human labor force originally needed for that job is greatly downsized.
