Because they are different things. What I think people are reacting to in the Gillette ad is they see it was an inherently political act, and a hypocritical one at that. And people hate hypocrisy in others. The mistake anyone would make in getting upset at it, is that is exactly the aim of the ad. It gets traction, spread on social media. And any criticism becomes reaffirming of the other side. There is no shit test with the political (even when used in viral marketing for purely consumerist aim…

Because there is nothing wrong with masculinity and showing it as men are failing and need to step up is condescending. It would be the same tone deafness and wrong headedness if one was to make a video showing successful black men surrounded by stereotypes and saying "Be one of the good ones." Or the putting an ad out with good women surrounded by drugged out single moms saying "Lead by example."
