I come from a military family and could let it go for the reasons you mentioned, but near as I can tell this just popped up out of the blue. Distasteful as fuck. This town is 60% retirees. I'm pretty sure its meant to appeal to all the old men who spend hours drinking coffee at McDonald's/Hardees/etc. Just a hunch though. I personally think it's disgusting.
