One thing I'd add is that when it comes to seeing people you've been rejected by, it's usually only awkward if you make it that way. It's actually the symbol for hospitality, as it was commonly used as a treat to impress guests by well off families as it was a lot harder to come by way back when. Seems like such a small tidbit, but if you show interest and understanding of something, anything, you can continue to push a conversation.
